What a big job doing a WindowBlinds skin turns out to be. The process of making a WB skin (in my case, I can't speak for others) seem to be getting longer and longer. It's not the mechanics of it that take the time - even though I don't use SkinStudio (gasp! "are you crazy" they cry), configuring the UIS files isn't the main job. Nor is the initial 'design' bit. Once I have the idea down in some form in Photoshop, the main windows elements get created fairly quickly. It's t

What a difficult choice to make. IMO skins are fairly transient things - I get bored of my own quite quickly, which is why I keep making new ones! Universe Metal, Avenger, PixOS/PixOffice, Colony and Diaspar are a few, but I'd be missing lots which I've used and loved. (Sorry if I missed you out! And yes - Russ made some great skins, now lost in the mists of time... We need a retrospective!)

Now here's an idea - I want to see someone do a multi-OS skin. Something with aspects of all those OSs. I think a prize should be given for the best, usable bits-of-existing-OSs skin! Maybe a booby-prize - a year's subscription to Farmer's Weekly or something.. (of couse, no-one would ever use it...)

Hah. Typical. With the time scales for this new comp being fairly tight, it looks like my current 'under development' skin needs pushing up the priority list! Luckily a lot of the basic window sections are complete. I need to do somthing more interesting with the XP start panel though this time... Igor! Load more rhubarb in the pixel generator! Bwahahaaa!

I hope that's good news... Once upon a time a small UK product - Xara, a great vector graphics app - was bought in by Corel, who were to provide all the marketing. Naturally, since it was in direct competition to CorelDraw, Corel kept it tucked away in a little corner until they had chance to add all the functionality that Xara had into it's own product. Who knows what will happen to PSP? (If you want a really quick, quality vector app you can download the trial versio

Well, the skin in my last article is still no nearer completion. :( (see my desktop screenshot) Part of the reason is that I haven't had any time to actually do anything to it, but partly it's because I'm not sure I really like it very much. It's difficult not feel like you've tried every combination of buttons, and you've shown min, max and close in so many ways, that they all start to look the same. And you look at all the skins being posted and think "well, it's just another plastic/gell s

This 'paying for skins' question is a thorny one. There will be detractors who will complain about paying for anything - despite the fact that they have a choice of whether or not to download, and hundreds of free skins to choose from. Of course there will be lots of things to sort out. Should all subscribers be allowed to offer skins for sale (I think that as has been mentioned, it may mean that only a few skinners will ever get to sell)? will skins be adjudicated before being allowed

Today I finally achieve adulthood. It's my birthday and none of you have sent me a present! It's a big one - the big four-0. And I feel like an old fart. Farty-forty. Now, where did I put my walking frame...?

Well, the snapshot of my desktop just about covers it. The WB skin in progress is 'number 3' in my set of latest WindowBlinds skins, but was actually started before the other two (Skuda and Gilden). Most of the main window components are just about ready, although I think I'll be tweaking the check and radio buttons - I don't really like the 'dot' on them, so I think they'll probably end up coloured instead. The Shellstyles are still to do along with progress animations and toolbar icons.
