It's a European word anyway, so you Yanks don't even have the right to decide what should and shouldn't be done with the word. To make matters more ridiculous, the words are actually defined by their technical computer definitions in most good dictionaries. Does that mean that any word with more than one meaning should never be used again if one particular definition of the word is offensive to certain people?

Technically yes, but software developers are generally okay with people using and modifying their icons just as long as the modified version is used solely to point to and launch the original application. You should never assume this is the case though, and don't be surprised if the original author of the icon someday asks for your version to be removed from distribution.
