Excellent, thanks for the responses! Although I find the idea that betas are not for "playing" a bit silly. Besides the literally countless game beta tests I've been involved in, I QA software for a living. In order to "test” a game, you inherently must play it as that is the purpose of the product being tested. However, my question was designed to elicit the exact

How playable is the beta? Is it possible to play a game from start to victory, feel challenged by your enemies along the way, and have a good time? Please, I'm not looking for a repetition of official information. I am aware of Stardock's beta release schedule, the early nature of the current beta, and the many missing features.
There has been some talk in the forums that one must pre-order before the release of Beta 2 in order to get into the beta? Is there any truth to this? Or can one pre-order at anytime in the beta process and gain the ability to download the beta client?
VICTORY CONDITIONS DO NOT WORK Enabling Cultural, Alliance, Technology and/or AI Tech has no effect, when the game starts they are all disabled. However, if you load a scenerio, the victory conditions settings in the scenerio do take effect. The only way around this bug is to put the victory conditions you want in a custom scenerio and then load it for every game . Also, by default all races default to Pure Good, this seems odd. I'd like to know what the default alig
I've been saying the alliance AI is bad for a long time. Pretty much everything having to do with alliances the AI handles poorly. I believe the bottom line problem is that the AI does not use alliances as a way to win the game. Theis is merely another symptom.
Duplicate wonders and trade items happen all the time in my games, every game. When a wonder or trade item is complete it doesn't seem to be taken out of the queue of the AI players. I posted that bug a couple days after release, I think others did too.

I do not like military action. It's not my play style. And I don't need it to win. End.
I can confirm that constant econmic slider adjustment is the key to this game right now. Of course part of the reason is because of the "lost" productivity for planets with nothing in queue. See this thread: http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=26410 I put my military on 100% for the first few turns to grab the yellow stars ASAP, plus it give me a boost on getting another survey ship out the door plus a couple constructors. That way when I find resources I can grab them immediat
Badbonez: When they took out my planet defenses with a few ships, the transport arrived next turn. One turn delay. Maybe it was a fluke, I don't get into battles much. > paying for and maintaining a huge military > force without using it seems wasteful LOL, yeah I'm sure it does seem wasteful. I simply have NO interest in military victory. So I sit there paying for a huge military and aim for a win with cultural victory. I'm not saying it's easy. At least one
I had the same problem. I'd like to know what's up with it too.
Ooops, sorry. I thought you were referring to the Dregin's overly friendly hugs. I believe: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate
When the sex is so gratuitous, XXX isn't enough.
Badbonez: I have definetly seen the AI (on Bright) send multiple ships to take out my planet defenses and then send a troop transport to take the planet. BUT... I don't see the AI working with their ally to do this. Yeah, yeah, I am going to keep beating on this drum. The strategy to winning this game is simple. Always have the strongest military. You don't need to use it, just have it. As long as your military rating is highest the other civs take no overt actions
Spiner said: > A far better choice for a mediocre power > is to ally _with_ the leader Hey, I agree! I just want the AI to do SOMETHING. Anything but ignoring the problem. Weak AI's trying to ally with the leader is fine by me, and of course it should be somewhat random, the AI shouldn't be making the same choices every game.
Thongor said: > OK, so try to win militarily instead of culturally. See, that's the thing. I have no interest in military victory. I can't speak for the person you were responding to, just myself. Cultural victory can seem easy only because, again as I have said, the AI players don't seem intent on winning, just existing.
I have to admit I have never had an AI donate me ships, even my allies. I realize this is because I learned early to always have a strong military rating so as to avoid the constant threats and attacks. So when a civ does finally does exceed my military rating, I'm still 2nd place and the other civs likely don't see a reason to help. The Leader said: > The AI doesn't gang up on another civ > that's too strong because they are chicken. That don't make sense. <-- That
Ryan Clifton: Do you find that ANYTIME your civ does not have the most powerful military, the civ who has a stronger military gets cocky? I do. It makes sense, but sometimes gets silly. Even when I am a goody two shoes and I am CLOSE in relations to the Torians, as soon as their miliary rating is higher them mine, relations tank. And on the opposite side, I find as long as I keep my military the strongest no civ evey declares war on me. Going back to me original post, why don't a c
To 1) make the AI behave more like a human player would, and 2) aid in games where one AI civ has grown crazy powerful, I propose: When one AI civ has become very powerful, the weak AI civs should become desparate and start seeking alliance with the other weak civs and the human player, even if they would not ally with them under normal circumstances. This is normal human player behavior, and helps offset an AI who by random chance ended up in a prime spot with a bucket load of high cl
What do you think the number one AI deficiency is? I think it's the fact WEAKER AI CIVS DON'T COOPERATE AGAINST STRONGER AI CIVS. Weak AI civs don't seem to take the initiative to find allies against stronger civs, whether the stronger civ is the human player or AI. Sometimes the Torian and Altarians ally in the late game, but they still don't cooperate that I can see other then declare war at almost the same time. Even if I am aligned good, the Torian and Altarians
The Dregin are the most powerful civ in 60% of the games I play where all civs are set to equal A.I. rating. The Dregin start off strong and the other civs seem unable to compete after that. Out of 20 or so games the Yor were only the strongest once, the Torian once, and the Arcean and Altarians split the difference. IT IS DISAPPOINTING that I really only have to worry about 3 races (Dregin, Arcean and Altarian). The Yor and Torian really need some kind of tweak. The NUMBE
I'd really like the option to REMOVE SHIP IMPROVING ANOMALIES from the game. It gets silly fast, and I'd prefer to improve my civ as a whole. Or at least give us the option to CHOOSE THE SHIP the anomaly benefits. That could be useful.
I partially agree, I quit more games then I finish, because they do start dragging. But still the end game is more streamlined then Civ games and MOO2. I still think a big part of the problem is the economic sliders, those buggers take more of my time then anything else, constantly having to adjust to minimize the loss from planets with nothing in queue.
DEFENSE THEORY IS BUGGED IN TRADE. Plain and simple. The AI wants 20 high-end techs for equal Defense Theory, which is nonsense. There are other techs like Defense Theory that are over-valued. I'm sure they will fix it eventually.
Tokaii, you need to use an application that knows how to fit the number of pages you want. Personally I use Corel Photo-Paint, but there are lots of others apps that can do this. I have to say again, Za'H, this is incredible stuff. I wish StarDock would pay you to place this puppy in-game
