How does gameplay compare to other games ? Looks to me that GalCiv has lot in common with Civ2, but has vastly improved background/story, uncomparable AI, and a host of niceties (that doesn't really change gameplay, such has separate queues for ships and projects..)... Am I right ?

If the huge galaxy already has 600+ sectors and 1,000s of systems what's the point of a super-duper-mega-galaxy ? The game has been designed and balanced for the current size, it's not only an issue of processing speed/RAM : management of fleets and planets would be impossible, and you could end the game without having encountered anyone (tech victory) ! Another way to put it : would football be more interesting if played on a field 1 mile across, even if there was actually space
Maybe putting a dedicated section here, where people could upload stuff, will give a central point for anything GalCiv-strategy related ? It'll surely take some mod/webmaster input so to keep it clean though :)
I don't feel that "newness" is related mainly to number of random events. As others pointed out, Moo1 and Civ1-2 didn't have many of them but DID have very lasting appeal just because the game was well designed and offered plenty of options to play, with new situations created "naturally" each time you played. To the contrary a game of say BotF was more "alike" each time and so game get old faster.
...amongst many others :)
Can't remember ! ;p
AFAIK, yes, Galciv has animations/cutscenes. And BTW, Moo1 also had neat small anims ...(I think GNN News robot IS a Moo1 invention !) :)
Looks like a dumb question, but it has consequences : By "flat" I mean, well, flat, that is sector 1,1 is a corner far form opposite sector 24,24 "Curved" means that some edges (or all) are in fact adjacent, as a Mercator map of the Earth. A "curved" map prevents "corner defense", you can't have safe flanks ! In a flat map a civ in the middle gets usually crushed first as it is on everyone else's path ...
Just read that at Poly MOO3 section : "STEEP DECLINE ON AVAULT `TOP 10` (10 March 2003, 19:17 | MoO3) Master of Orion III has seen its steepest decline on The Adrenaline Vault`s "Top 10 Most Searched After Products" listing in recent memory during the week of March 2-8, 2003. The announcement was made today by AVault`s Brian Clair. Now in fourth position, it MoO3 was in first place last and second place two weeks ago. Fellow Infogrames title Unreal II jumped to third from s
SgtLoric, It's funny, BOTF was quite dead and in the past 3 days two new sites emerged, another guy just opened one at http://www.geocities.com/maasenstodt/ :) Where is your Fed Outpost ?
MoM stands for "Master Of Magic", the other classic from Simtex/Microprose. It's a sort of Fantasy Civ, where you play a Sorceror bound to dominate the world ! I still enjoy it now .. :d You can get it (not so legally) at abandonware sites (pm me for details) ~SDC~
Hum, I've never played the game, so those "size" aren't clear to me : I suppose the max size 24x24 your refer to is in sectors, but how many systems are in an avg sector ? What is the supposed "scale" of a sector in LY/parsecs ? And what size are smaller galaxies ?
Oh, this one ain't original but would be lot of fun : #51 - Mirror universe (one every not so often :p ) A space/time warp opened to a parallel universe and a new Civ appeared in the galaxy : it has EXACTLY the same characteristics of YOUR civ (same # of planets, people, same tech, ships, bonuses ..,) BUT his alignment is EXACTLY the opposite of yours ! ;)
You can't dl "full" SE4 game AFAIK : you've to buy at Shrapnel's and wait for the CD to arrive ... II got mine to France in 7 days so you'll still have it before GalCiv ! :)
#19 - Dubya Events, once in a century : A militaristic leader emerges in the most powerful major power : power goes to war with the weakest minor power of the galaxy near a Galactic resource. All relations with former allies at -50%, except one that has to be bribed 500bc+. Only lasts 4 years (expectedly), after that government back to normal LOL (French humor, now putting double-Adamantium powered armor) ;p
GreenReaper, Crashes under W98 ?? Waddaya speaking about ;) ?? I sometimes have buggy programs that crash, but very rarely 98 itself... Maybe because I have tons of utilities/control progs ... :) ~SDC~
Maybe it has already be pointed out, but SDC (0.9) does'nt update/refresh properly : new threads don't appear after first update (at install)... :notsure: ~SDC~
Myros, your skin is better than the standard MOO3 look, but 1/ The graphical look stuck me as awful in the first preview I saw - that washed-out blue, eek ! 2/ 800*600 only just reflects that the game has an engine dating back from 3 years 3/ Looking at your screen, I did read the "Autocannon" description. There are words in it, but the amount of info given = 0.00 ... Meaning that all research and design are made blindly ! Where's the strategy ?? Definitely I'll pass this on
Why in the hell use XP in the first place ? ;p W98 has 99% of functionality, gobs much less HD space, CPU and RAM, and with it everything works (MOO, MoM, whatever, even 80s'CGA games...) from my desktop, I can even AltTab them :)
This forum has a nice touch, but well functionnally it's somewhat light... ;p (and why use only 1/2 of the screen width and this smallish font ??) And indeed if activity goes beyond "confidential" it'll soon become a real mess ... Why not putting a ol'good UBB forum, everyone uses them so we all have the habit ! ;)
I support the proposal of split putting TWO parameters : - Prod Malus/Bonus -60 to +40 (or more !) - Intelligence : 5 to 100 I'd like to have an ubiquitous enemy, not a cheating one !!
Thx Frogboy, now we just have to wait till the damn 26th !! Prepare for a huge burst of purchase and downloads on D-Day !! :D But I still wonder why you don't take direct preorders ? Don't need money ?? ;p
Bump cos'I didn't have answer to my main issue : how/when will I be able to buy DIRECT ?? It is'nt possible currently !
I just dug up a couple of games to stay in the Space Start mood : MOO1 and Birth of Federation :D SE4 is a good candidate too, but there'stoo much micromanagement for me ! MOO2 always left me unsatisfied : "Wot, my ultimate Galactic empire has a 12-ships fleet ?" :D :D
Well, I'm somewhat undecided about this (ship design and tac combat)... It's cool to be able to precisely design ships and use them to the best, but either it's too simple to be really interesting, else tac combat and design/upgrades eat too much time out of the strat game. I kinda like the idea of Civ-like units with additional bonus due to tech/culture/whatever, but indeed it's les rewarding : "Yup now we discovered BattleShips, let's build a couple..." Maybe a SMAC-like appr
