Hi everybody! Thanks for a veeery useful guide, and some very interesting comments! Seeing that I'm not the only one who wanted to print this, I created a nicely printable PDF file of the article (complete with photos), and some of the most useful comments. You can find it at http://www.breueronline.de/klaus/galciv/GC2_BeginnersStrategyGuide.pdf In case you need some details from the photos, I've collected and zipped them: http://www.breueronline.de/k

Well, if I like the game (and I reeeeally like GalCiv2), I'd buy any expansion that comes out. See, this way I know that a game I rather like will be improved. A version 3 could mean that some things have changed which I liked in version 2 - for example, in my eyes Civ 4 is not as good as Civ 3. (Well, yes, of course I trust you guys - your games are excellent. But this is my general opinion). Thus my advice, for what it's worth: keep bringing out expansion packs for your excell
What version of Windoze are you using? What's your hardware configuration? Are you overclocking your PC? If you have been using Windows for a while, it might simply be time to reinstall it. Needs to be done every 6 months or so :(
I had the exact same problem. That is because ZoneAlarm produces an MP5 hash code of every program allowed to access the net - if the program is changed (via update), you will be asked again if it may call out. There's an option in there somewhere, disabling the hash check for a given program. Can't tell you right now, sorry - I'm in my Linux box ;)
I also dig the trade texts. The first time I ever traded with the aliens, I thought I'd offer them: The Universal Translator! Answer: "Tap. Tap. Is this thing on?" :)
I don't need my own music. The current background stuff is pretty good, and I had less fun when I put anything else into the background: either it disturbed my concentration, or it got on my nerves quickly. Or both.
SDC also works great for me, and I had to install it twice (Windoze crashed hard). The only problem I have is that it keeps telling me that the program has to restart for changes to take effect, but I simply ignore it. It's nice to start it once per day and look for a new patch - like the fix today with the trade! Wheeee! LOL
Strange - I couldn't figure out how *not* to win via a culture victory. My first three games I won this way - although I had planned a nice little war, the enemy simply came running to me instead. So, in the end, I turned it off (in the game configuration, at the start of a new game). Now I finally had a military victory LOL And before you look at me as some kind of strategy-god, I played all AI on 'Beginner', except for the last one ;)
Sheesh, I shouldn't read posts when I'm tired. I first thought you'd written "I just spayed Boulderites last week". Evil...
Well, I work hard to place three starbases in every sector I own stars in. Build one starbase, add all manufacturing boni, then build the second one with the same boni, followed by the third one. Afterwards, improve all other modules, particularly the attack ones. Build one base up to terror star, get it under way and start a new base. Works like a charm :)
I also love the minor races. They built up their planets until they're in the 20s, don't expand beyond their sector... great. Because then I walk in and either convince them using a terror star, or I simply land a bunch of troops - voila, great planets full of people, doing bird imitations (cheep, cheep). Last game one of them started up in the middle of my empire... with three major star systems in the same sector... and two terror stars on their way south... fell into my hand
Yes, jaustin1, you're strange. Because I walso want to put the box on my shelf, and people call *me* strange ;) Anyway, no hurry here. The CD can wait - it's just a sorta-kinda additional backup, after all.
Bah. Of course the AI cheats. It keeps me up all Friday, all Friday night, all Saturday, and now I'm so tired I loose all the time... ;)
Thanks, Brad, but I don't think I want to bug you with this at the moment. I'm very impressed that a developer would take the time for something like this, though - thanks! See, I found a kinda-sorta solution: I activated the 'auto-turn' option. While I do have to get used to this, I think I actually prefere it... Besides, this is what happens when you play like crazy without getting enough sleep - I completely forgot that this morning my Win98SE blew apart, so I had to fully r
Full Linux info is here: http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=26596 Includes a nice HOW-TO :)
Well, much as I like the changes, I fear I will have to reinstall and apply the downloadable patch only. The 4/4/03 patch has caused my turn button to go crazy again - after very few turns, it gets stuck in the clock display, and won't let me finish the turn. I didn't mind initially (directly after the update), when it happened every hour or so (time to up the TLC slider on the cats again). But now it's happening every couple of turns - help! Anybody else have th
Depends. Since you're obviously only looking at a section of the galaxy, which one are you looking at? One of the outer arm edges? Inside an arm? The center? I'd wager a guess that our own location would be Scattered and Rare. But then, what do I know, I'm just a hobbyist ;)
As far as I understand, it gets built automatically. And do your best to dump the zoo on your enemy when it's time to vote. They *will* escape, and cause havoc, so find a race nicely far away...
Hm, sounds like you have the wrong strategy for the start game. The first thing to do when starting a game, above all else, is grabbing planets and resources. Thus, at first, your spending should be 100% military. Once you have grabben *all* stars available to you (which can take a while), you should set the sliders to 100% social, and build up the planets (improve the environment). Once the majority of the planets is converted, step 3: Up research to 100% and work your way
And the bug is? If my terror star was incapable of taking out a capital ship on its own, I'd have the designer shot. And the main engineers. And the workers.
Well, I moved two fully outfitted terror stars into the quadrant of a minor race (I did a lot of Diplomacy research, and was a real convincing kind of man). Ten turns later, they had still not come over to my point of view. So one of the stars, erm, accidentally, ah, bumped into the star. Sadly, contact to that minor race was kinda lost afterwards...
Since most people check out the Metaverse merely to look at their score (and, full of envy, admire the top 10), perhaps clicking on the 'Metaverse' option in the main menu of the game should bering you straight to the correct page...
Eeek! 360 posts! Okay, so here is another little list with suggestions from me. I'm using the 04/04/2003 version, with the update that came out today (yay!) LOL a) Optionally showing the minimap when looking at a planet is very useful indeed! How about making it even more useful - could you simply show the minimap on the right, with the (now shorter) planet list beneath it? And, of course, with the current planet selected on the mini-map. After playing this game every d
Actually, it might be a good idea to produce T-shirts with "Galactic Civilizations" written in the correct font at the top, with the picture of one of the races (or even minor race logos) beneath it. Hey, Brad, how about it? In black? I know I'd buy one for each race :)
Strange, played without a problem the past week, and with the new update - blam, two problems. First, it crashed just after launching a new game - I'd set everything up, clicked on start - the screen went black, slowly filled with red form the top, and rebooted. After reboot, everything works fine again, except that after a couple of turns, the turn button locks itself again - shows the clock, and doesn't finish the turn. Weirdly enough, I finished an old game first (Geo to
