Wow. What fireworks. Normally I'd be pretty irritated if a developer had a public fight with a reviewer. I'd simply ignore them both, and the game. :( But... I've been programming (commercially) since 1984 (whoo, I'm dating myself). And I wrote a couple of game, although none of them got published. I do recall writing a very simple strategy game, and struggling with the AI. I didn't want it to cheat, and spent a LOT of time reading through research papers, testing ideas, f

Whew - just had a major victory against the AI (all on Beginner, though). I wanted to submit my score to the metaverse, but I can't find myself on it. That's the third time now, and I actually wanted to show it off :( I have a DSL line, used 'Klaus' as alias, and yet... nothing. The program simply continued to the main menu, as if it had submitted my score. Mind you, it's not *that* important (I'm busy with my next war, it's 02:25 am, ca't stop ;) ), but it would be n

RustyBlade, thanks for the offer. I'll wait 'till Monday to see if Frogboy emails me himself - would be better than to bother him, as I'm sure he gets plenty of email already ;) Feadhel, apparently I'm just as obsolete as you are, as I also very much prefer a book...

F-19 from Microprose (1989). Fat book, full of details. Check modern strategy guides. They really stink. Look at the strategy guide to 'Master of Magic' - it's brilliant.

Back to the original topic on AI population growth: I was also really surprised by it. My population just sort of sat there, while the AIs really took off. Reading through most of the threads here, I started by putting 100% into social work, and upgraded the planets. Next, 100% research, for more planet upgrading. Switch back to 100% social, and build them. My population growth now exactly matches the AIs. Joy! And switching to 100% military work really made m

Hi! Yes, okay, seeing how lousy most modern strategy guides are, I haven't bought one in years, myself. But... *I'm* quite good at this kind of thing. Wrote a book on BASIC (yes, BASIC, I'm ashamed) while I was still a kid, and wrote the 'Unofficial Duke Nukem 3D FAQ' a long time ago (which actually made it into the platinum edition) :) Enough of me bragging about myself - how about I write a guide like this? We could do this in two different ways: a) I wr

Let them have their Dreadnoughts. Take a couple smaller ships, fly around his front, and start harassing his trade, supply lines, weakly defended planets, startbases... They usually sue for peace pretty quickly as a result. But LordTheRon is right - build at least some ships, so you're not the weakest, military-wise.

Well, instead of cursing at him for not being a huge fan, let's simply answer him: 1) Waypoints Yes, this has been suggested several times already. But if the system tells you that a ship is finished, it takes you to the planet anyway, and you can immediately launch the ship from there, then click NEXT to go to the next planet with a new ship. No big deal in my book. 2) Sensors I don't see the point. Simply build a couple of sats, place them all over the galaxy, and you

I also think an alarm clock triggering an event [at a certain time/after a certain number of hours] would be great. Mind you, on weekends I start playing in the early morning, and only stop when my cats come in complaining about food - usually early in the morning...

If you guys think his text is hard to read, try Stanislav Lem. I'm a great fan, so I had no trouble reading Ichimaru ;) And yes, the very same thing happened to me. Luckily, it was a small galaxy, so I was able to hold them off (barely) while creaking into a culture victory.

Great idea, this! Will try it tonight :) I had a better way, though: ask a race for a boatload of money (without offering anything in return). If they don't agree, blast a planet and ask them again. Surprising how quickly they agree ;)

Oooh, lookie here - I have over 50% influence in the UP. So, let's propose the following: "All civilizations have to hand over 50% of their planets to the Terran Empire". Thank you. Next proposition: "All civilizations except the Terran empire are to self-destruct immediately." Thanks again - Victory! I think I see why we cannot propose any resolutions ourselves ;)
