I'd say that early in the game, the starbase's defense will take care of most attackers. Later on, when the real heavy-hitters appear, I'd send my own heavy-hitters to defend the base... backed with various military modules (like all the Battlestations, speed+, enemy speed-, etc.). ~SDC~

Heh, building 3-4 sb's per sector was my original strategy for boosting planet production and culture-bombing the enemy. Now that those starbases cost me 5bc per turn, I'm a bit more frugal with them. Besides resources, I only build one per sector, two if there are 3+ stars (or 1-2 stars that are high-class planets). ~SDC~
If you don't use SDC, then the patch and bonuspak *are* a single download. ~SDC~
I just had this issue come up at the start of my current game. A minor civ was one sector north of Sol (as luck had it, it was the last direction I explored). All they had for defense were two colony ships and a starfighter... plus a population of about 500M... on a class 22 planet! Woot! About-faced Hero from about 6 sectors away (the only ship I had with ATT score), and focused on getting Tech for transports. Unfortunately, by the time Hero got there (at a swift 3 parsecs/month) and I had
I forget the name, but on the screen that allows you to buy from Mitrosoft (almost typed "M$" there :) ), there are three other companies to buy from. The top one is *very* expensive, but you get the ship/project next month (useful for Trade Goods and Wonders). There are quite a few threads on the money loss issue, but basically it works like this: Don't build every project for every planet. The maintenance will kill you. If the other players are threatening you, build some
The mouse wheel works wonderfully when trading, as well as early in the game when loading colony ships... but, once you have 4-7 billion people on a planet, and you only want 100-200 million on a colony ship, you have to scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll... (reapeat ad.infin) until you get it. At higher numbers, manually sliding the bar goes from 0 to 700M instantly. ~SDC~
"And here we have the Common Froggy... an apparant sleepless indiviudal, with a dedication that is inspiring to all other froggies. Even now, he is coding some, doubtless, exciting bit of buisness that will create more threads that both praise and criticize him. Let's listen in, shall we?" *type type type type*no multiplayer*type type type*no multiplayer*type type type*no multiplayer*type type* "Utterly fascinating! Thank you, and good night!" ~SDC~
It's the "Details" button on the planet screen. Only problem, it doesn't give much info about each social project at this screen. I usually build ships at a "warplanet" (high military, low social) and send ships all over the other systems. Also do that with the "free" ships that Hero finds now and then. I've noticed that constructors have quite a large range. Never played on a map bigger than medium, so constructors are sent anywhere I need them... which, before the 1.03 patc
Good thing I usually pick the +10% repair to start... cheap and useful. :) I wasn't aware that starbases didn't immediately get their HP's... guess I'm just to busy clicking on stuff to get to the next turn (interesting that in a TURN-based game, I'm still rushing to get stuff done... I guess I just want to see what happens next :d ). ~SDC~
I'm guessing that the higher the number, the fewer casualties you have (i.e. the higher the population will be after the invasion is done). Since I rarely have money to blow on invasions, I stick with traditional attack (just make sure you have lots of soldier or tech bonuses). ~SDC~
Ah, that's why. I usually just waffle at neutral so I can trade with everybody... although I'll go evil if I set all the AI's to neutral. :CONGRAT: ~SDC~
Don't ditch that game yet, just check your planets and "cancel" completed socials that you don't need. You should earn some extra scratch per month (especially if you did build everything on every planet). Influence is good for voting in the UP and controlling a sector. Also, crank up the influence in a sector to take over other civs' planets (though it'll be tough at medium to high intelligence). Once you get basic socials (soil, banking, whatever else you like for your stra
I haven't noticed either before. Is Galactic Peace the "good" tech and Galactic Domination the "evil" tech? ~SDC~
Yea! More questions! :CONGRAT: Okay... Bases, and ships, will repair themselves. I believe they'll only do this if you have some points in repair (check your stats screen, under abilities). Apparantly, the shipyards don't work properly in the current build... they seem to cease working if you load a saved game. Or something like that... I rarely use them anyways. As far as builing constructors faster, anything that increases a planets' (or your empire's) military
Anytime you can spin the mouse wheel to move a slider, I've sometimes had to click on the slider (or its arrows) first, then move the wheel. ~SDC~
Not just you about the Auto Pilot thing. I thought some of my ships weren't moving, but I had other things going on in the galaxy, so I left it alone. Later, I checked, and the darn things were still in same sector. I had to click them and reset the auto pilot to get them to move! Haven't built a Terror Star, but shouldn't it have a high defense score? If it doesn't naturally have one, do you build defense modules? Actually, some people have used the move-constructors-to-d
Alas, no. If you are building colony ships (or transports) I would turn off the autolaunch (at least temporarily). What I do is move the slider with the mouse as low as I can go, then spin the mouse wheel to get it to the number I want. I agree that we should be able to type in the exact number! >:( ~SDC~
Not sure what they do, but the level increases if that ship destroys another ship (kinda like experience points from an RPG). Scouts and constructors don't seem to be worth much (if anything), while warships get a noticiable increase. My battlin' USS Hero usually has several levels after a couple of wars. ~SDC~
Oof, lotsa questions... Okay, as far as starbases go, they can't attack. They can only defend. However, if a defending ship (or starbase, in this case) has a higher defense than attack, then half of its defense goes to its attack for the retaliation (they retaliate only if they survive the initial attack). This is also what makes the Defender and Battleaxe useful. If you are really building *every* social on *every* planet, then the maintenance fee is what's probably costing
I've gotten both the Torians and Altarians close (lots of tech trading!) and have Alliance researched. Now the Alliance option is listed, but both races refuse to ally. Should I give/sell them the tech first? ~SDC~
I'm playing Universaltits currently... got only one other star in the Sol sector, no 15+ planet, besides Earth, in the Sol system. But I did get a minor civ in the sector north of Sol (class 22) that I invaded. :) I did notice, however, that the usual screw-you-over events haven't happened yet. The only precursor find was by me (for 53 Corvettes! Improved by my current +60% weapons, +40%defense, +30%speed!), there hasn't been any jail or zoo escapes (not that I had either), no ecom
Heh, I started selling my tech for cash (or influence) last night for the first time (bankrupted the Arcaens, who, unfortuantely, surrended to the Drengin). Accidently I discovered that the mouse wheel could increase/decrease the amount. Now *that* saved a lot of time. :CONGRAT: ~SDC~
--Monthly upkeep (maintenance) for each ship listed on its Info window (can't remember the cost of each ship-type). --Along those lines, how about listing ship maintenance separately from military spending on the economic screen? Currently, I have to slide military spending to 0% to see what my ships/starbases are costing me. --Carriers. You could put small ships inside the carrier (each ship would have a size, scouts are 1, starfighters are 2,etc.) and all the enemy would se
Actually, there seems to be an update on SDC for Multimedia. I know the version went up at Daylight Savings, but it seems to have gone up again (1.007). Since there supposed to be a new movie with the 1.02 patch, maybe that's what's on the latest version of Multimedia. ~SDC~
The only problem I ever have with SDC is when it gets updated, my Firewall won't allow it to work. I just have to "permit" it to access the Internet, then I'm good. ~SDC~
