If you think of multiplayer TBS games as giant computerized board games, I think it's easier to swallow. It's true that you probably need a group of friends to play with, but even 1 person can count as a group, especially when the AI is decent. I've been playing the same game of Civ4 with the same buddy for about 2 weeks now and it's been an absolute blast. I'm obviously in the minority here, but I think that one of the main reasons you see so much

I'd watch what you say about the AI in SotS Ashberry. A closed mind is often one missing out on a great game. SotS is very, very different from GalCiv2, and I'm getting both. SotS is also multiplayer, something that I have seen poo-pooed for GalCiv2, much to my irritation given how much fun MP Civ4 has turned out to be.
I think in time it will be more popular. Besides, most of the Civ4 users probably don't expect it to work very well. I'm curious to see what will happen in another year or so. The fact of the matter is that playing against a computer, no matter how well programmed, is never as fun or interesting as crushing your flesh & blood buddies. There's a lot of Civ4 games going online when I log in, at least as many as I would see for games like Homeworld or
I understand, but you have to consider all of those who are turned off by TBS games precisely because they *don't* have MP. And as anyone will admit, no matter how good an AI is, it will never be as interesting as playing against other humans. Before Civ4, I was firmly in the camp of "why bother with MP TBS games" but now I'm not so sure. I think Civ4 did a great job proving how you can create a successful MP 4X game. When SOTS comes out, it'll be
Let me start this post by saying that this is NOT a "whine thread" about GalCiv2's lack of multiplayer. Until last night, I was never sure if a 4X TBS could have decent multiplayer. Civ4, however, if nothing else, is a "proof of concept" for the multiplayer 4X TBS. I played for a number of hours with a friend last night without any hiccups and we were able to easily and simply save and restart the game (we tested this before quitting for the night).
Nothing major, but the buttons on the Main Menu take a while to fully appear. Probably my system. Dell Latitude D800 Pentium M 1.4 MHz 512 MB RAM GeForce4 Mobile 64 MB video
Yes, and if this is the same bug that's affecting me, you can't save any changes that you make to ANY race statistic or ability. The save/load buttons are greyed out and look non functional. I also cannot save empire or leader changes or changes to race color.
Oh sorry, I thought that was Icewyng's specific bug thread!
Just started up my first Beta 4D game. Noticed a few bugs: 1. The game wouldn't allow me to save a customized version of the humans (I had fiddled with abilities, name, and colors). Save and Load are greyed out and when I hit Next, it calls me the Terran Alliance with standard human coloring. 2. The starting techs look mostly fixed (for the humans, at least), but make sure the races are all given the same number of picks. It
Ooh yea. THough I must admit that SEIV gave me a headache. Could never quite get into it. However, part of that was the painfully slow combat of SEIV and SEV supposedly has real-time combat, hopefully allievating that little problem. But yea, we space-based TBS gamers have it good right now! (I guess God is making up for MOO3, eh?) I think all of these games should be released via Stardock Central. Screw the big publishers. The space-based TBS makers ought to stick together, I
Oh boy oh boy! GalCiv2 is nearing completion, Sword of the Stars should be coming out soon! There has never been a better time to be a space-based 4X TBS fan. Woo hoo!
This is basically what I'm saying -- the ship design system is a great idea, but the execution just needs to be tweaked and, well, frankly, perfected for it to do what you want -- that is, not be clunky and actually add something to the game as opposed to create a "chore" in ship design. Remember the casual gamer! He may pick up GalCiv2 and play around for a while, but once he finds out what a pain it can be to design cool looking ships, he'll give i
Yes, I know about the slider and I don't think it works too well. It's very hard and overly tricky to get the UI to do what you want when it comes to ship design. All I ask is that the screen be looked at seriously and changed if it's found to be overly cumbersome. I could actually be happy with the number of red dots if the UI surrounding ship design was tweaked in some way. My idea above with the separate screen for designing "the look" would be
The sector sizes are fine, and so is the number. The bigger issue is the number of stars, but that seems to be related to the style chosen (Tight or Loose Clusters or Scattered). Scattered games seem to have more stars. My only concerns with the current size is that it's actually really hard to get that "epic" feel especially with 9 other players on the map. You run into each other way too soon.
I have another list for you guys. Let me just say that I'm loving GalCiv 2. If I appear to be overly critical, it's only because I was one of the bigger supporters and beta testers of MOO3 and we all know what happened there. I loved GalCiv and I know I'll love GalCiv 2. Just gotta help work out the bugs! Without further ado, I give you my list o' bugs-- 1. This is related: the borders and ownership for the main player (at lea
Citizen tberg-- I know about the need to point directly at the red dot. Really, I'm just referring to the ease with which you can create cool looking ships. There are SO many extra "bits" and SO many red dots, that the number of combinations (as they have pointed out) are nearly limitless. The problem with that is that there are so many combinations it can be hard to figure out what looks good. What they need is to trim it down some and
So, I have a question and then a suggestion -- I haven't played far enough into a game to see if you get pre-made designs for the "standard" classes of ship. I know you get a Defender, but that's as far as I've gotten. If you don't get a standard Cruiser, Battleship, etc., I think there should be pre-made designs for those. Here's the reason-- I still don't really like the way ship design works. The gimmick of bein
That's what mine says too, but I don't actually start with Hyperdrive and I can't actually build Colony Ships until I research it.
Another "not sure if this is a bug" bug -- When I start a new game as the humans, I have access to several techs but not the techs EARLIER in the tech tree. This leads to strange situations, like starting the game without Hyperdrive and being unable to build the standard design Colony Ship and Scout until I actually research Hyperdrive, even though I have Ion Drive (or whatever it is the humans start with).
Sorry, that was "Gigantic" is too small, not "huge." Anyway, the Gigantic galaxy in GalCiv is 30x30 sectors. The Gigantic Galaxy in GalCiv 2 is about 15x15 sectors. That's significantly smaller, and while I realize that GalCiv 2 utilizes planets that can be colonized by more than 1 race, it still seems puny for a truly epic game. Is this intentional for the beta?
I don't know if this is a bug or not, and maybe it's just my expectations from GalCiv 1, but the largest galaxy available in the beta doesn't seem that large to me. I don't think it IS a bug, and in fact, maybe the largest galaxies aren't programmed in, but there don't seem to be that many stars compared to GalCiv 1 Huge galaxies. How many stars *should* we be seeing in Huge galaxies? If this is the maximum, then I think it's too small f
No screenshots will be needed. The newest version of the beta seems to have corrected the problems.
Sure, if you can tell me how to do it. (I realize there's probably a very easy way and it's probably right in front of my nose, but see above post re: time.) Thanks! (My LCD is in pretty good shape and nothing else appears funny. I'll try to get you a screenshot ASAP.)
Humans. (Sorry, law school eating up all my potential beta testing time...darn that career!)
I'm just curious -- the UI can still be hard to actually *see.* Especially on planet screens, the green doesn't show up very well. Is this a problem with my install or my monitor? I'm running on a Dell Latitude D800 with a GeForce 4 Go TI4200 w/ 64 MB VRAM.
