Hi! How effective is the Most Defense strategy? In early to mid game it's simply a killer strategy. What I need for it to start working is: - medium hull, - 10-15 spaces for weapon(s) - any type my opponent doesn't use defenses for. Attack strenght 2-4. - 10-15 spaces for engines (Ion or Impulse III). If small uni or lack of space on ship, then even none, - in remaining space I fill the proper type of defenses for the weapon my opponet use

Hi! So defense must be higher than attacker's attack before it is effective? Attacker's FLEET attack. Very doable, since defenses are cheap to research and to put on ships. However you need quite some space on that ship, so for the start the medium hull is mandatory. My first design in my current game to fight fleets of small hulls with ~20 gun attack was medium hull with only one Impulse engine, one Harpoon, but 7 Superior Duranthiums. Because of th
Hi! Bad news for you that play all-labs strategy: I just discovered that in game version DA 1.61 focus does NOT transfer production points from asteroid mines to research. BR, Iztok
Hi! And the above is calulated separately for each asteroid field output, and rounded down. Regarding asteroids: yesternight I noticed a strange thing regarding their output. I have some level-3 mines in the game that add 18 MPs to a nearby planet, but I can't see ANY BOOST to planets's manufacturing output. I'm playing all-labs, so by my research there should be 4
Hi! Are Spore Ships worth it? I'd say yes. I even argued once the Super Anihilator is too stong: - they need only one tech to conquer all planets, - then need to research only one extreme environment to have most planets at 100%, - they need significantly less pop - no losses at invasions, - sporing the planet can give tech, - spore ship is cheaper than troop ship with two advanced troop modules, - sporing doesn't cost money like i
Hi! I can't figure out how to make a spore ship. You should already start with Germ warfare, the prerequisite tech for Spore Weapons. It's at the very bootom of the tech tree. If you don't see it, you probably did something wrong when picking your super ability. BR, Iztok
Hi! ...powerplants... the nice thing about them is they are bonus production so they cost less. Sorry, but here you're wrong: you pay for ALL production they provide. You pay a half for the production from abilities and starbasses. BR, Iztok
Hi! Check wiki: Initial Population Growth - Illustrative Numbers below Population. BR, Iztok
Hi! DA's combat I forget to mention a very important thing: - defenses fully replenish between combat rounds. is there no advantage to being the attacker? AFAIK no. The only case would be with the tie rule and both ships being equal. In this case attacker would survive. BR, Iztok
Hi! I play with auto-upgrader and I've seen an entire planet upgrade maybe 10 buildings in 2-3 turns when I got a new tech. Err, the only way I know off to speed-up the construction/upgrade is to buy one upgrade and let the planet build another one at the turn-processing. That makes two. I haven't seen anything close to what you've described in my games, and I did a lot of low-costs/high-production upgrading/converting. Can you check that again with a sav
Hi! Indeed the combat has changed: - in each round of combat all ships in a fleet attack single target, - when that target is destroyed, the remaining unfired weapons fire at another ship, - each weapon now rolls separately from Luck ability (0%, 25% or 50% of max weapon's power) to max weapon's power, - defenses (if any) on that ship roll for each attack of each weapon. If they roll lower than the attack is, ship loses hitpoints. If they roll higher or equal, their max roll
Hi! Go to the colonies screen and click on any building you happen to be upgrading. It will show the precise cost remaining (in Dark Avatar at least). This is often immediately less than the theoretical cost of the upgrade. I don't know if it carries over 1 for 1 or not, but *something* appears to get carried over. I'm affraid there's nothing carried over from production, at least when I've been testing this (DA 1.6beta4or5) it wasn't. It still seems to b
Hi! Troop Transports get destroyed anyway during invasions, so why spend money to put weapons on them? With earlier versions of GC2 and in late game I've sometimes built troop transports with a single cheap weapon on them. The reasons were quite simple: the trop transport was usually significantly faster than my warships, and it also had spare room, so it could double as an interceptor, destroying soft unarmed targets in space or in orbit. After losing s
Hi! Minefields Shipyards and cloaking, and weapons range, and computers, and mechs, and carriers, and... and... Brian, AI in GalCiv 2 plays so good because the game is simple enough for AI to handle it. Each addition you and I mentioned would require a a lot of man-days to make the AI to use it properly. AFAIK Stardock has only one AI developer, that's also neded on other stardock's projects, despite there are
Hi! Question about morale buildings, how would you like the behavior changed? Thanks for asking Brad! IMO this is not just the problem of a morale building, it's a whole issue of making money with the population. The current system makes NO INCENIVE of going on a non-HW planet over 9/11/13B pop (depending on my morale ability), because the Stock Market gives 25% tax revenue increase IMMEDIATELY, and growing pop from 11B to 16B (two level 2 farms
Hi! here's a little trick that I learned from Evil Druid Eh, AIs to that all the time. BR, Iztok
Hi! How do I make my ships go further out from colonys? 1) Colonize more, and further. 2) Build starbases. To build them further away, put on specialized constructors more Life supports, or upgrade them to a version with less engines and more life supports, when they get to their range limit. 3) I discourage using Life supports on warships. There's never enough space on them even for warfaring items. Use Econ starbases in the middle of your oppone
Hi! 8-Frigate M3-12 3342 I'm pretty cartain M3-12 means model from game year 3, month 12. 3342 is some incremental number for/from ship ID, that all ships get. And Frigate means medium hull. IMO there are some other naming schemes, like a large hull with significantly more weapons than defenses is a Battelship, but a large with lots of defenses is called a Cruiser. BR, Iztok
Hi! I too remember having more mega events in earlier games. But in the last two-three I played I had NONE. Despite playing with Luck I also haven't seen a Lucky Ranger in my last dozen of games. About the only thing I remember were minor pirates happened twice in one testbed. Maybe (I'm just guessing): - they're too radical, so developers decreased the chance for them in sparse-populated universes I like to play, - my ususal Luck trait prevented them, - I'm doing too good in th
Hi! Fixed. Now THAT 's a response. Thank you again! BR, Iztok
Hi! I'll notify the web team. Thank you! BR, Iztok
Hi! You may find that you just don't like thinking through plans that may take hours to work or have an affect....Truthfully, it's not for most people in the world. That reminded me on my game I posted in the AAR section: Thalans' long struggle . From it you can see what long-term planning means. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/smiles/Wink.gif" border=0 align="absmiddle
Hi! I want to know if the predetermined ships are any good. No. Simple as that, and valid for all normal+ difficulty levels. I'm not very good on the part of designing ships... To quote game designers (file GC2_Hints.xml, first hint): Creating your own custom starships is not only fun, but it often makes the difference between victory and defeat. Monitor what your e
Hi! Are you using a particular broswer or any javascript blocking, etc I noticed that problem just recently, but at home I haven't updated my WinXP or touched IE 6.0 settings for ages, and at office there are daily updates. But the behaviour of bothe IEs is the same. After you mentioned javascript, I checked for errors and I really get it when clicking on Edit or your name on your post, like DethAdder said. The error says (translated): "The
Hi! I'm just wondering who exactly these games were targeted at. Certainly not me. I tell you what: after 20 years of typing and using mouse my eye-hand coordination is still at best below average. My fingers hit right keys about 90% of the time, and quite often in wrong sequence. Hence I simply suck at real-time games. I really would like to play a FPS here or there, but when it takes me 2 seconds to aim a gun and I'm dead in half a second, I really can'
