But should the engines get smaller due to miniturization advances? Look, it went from 10 to 11 because the relative hull size got bigger. (% of Hull). But what got miniturized in the engine? Nothing but the electronics/control systems. Most of an engine isn't able to be minuturized just because you've increased your basic minuturization (electronics). Engines should get smaller with Engine Advances, not miniturization. Under that line of reasoning, Engines increasing size is the corre

I had to rebuild my gaming rig recently. The new build has only had the first Beta 4 on it. That build will not launch from the shortcut. I haven't tried to launch it from SDC, but I did find that I can get GC2 Beta 4 to run by using the GC2 Config to launch it. Beta 4 also installs the sound effects at 0 volume/off. The installer probably needs to set them, or the default for them should be different from "Zero Out".

Note on no sound after install: When Beta 4 is installed on a clean system, it sets all sound volume for the game at 0, and all sound effects are turned off. A slightly odd choice, but understandable since they were probably zeroed out, and when nothing is first found, the zeroing/off carries through.

I also have the shortcut problem. If I launch the game from the Config, it works fine. If I launch it from the shortcut (which points at the GC2 exe), it crashes.

Mike C, if you turn off your music, the crashes during movies will be reduced. You really need a Gig of memory for games with lots of usable land on the smaller worlds. If you want to play large or huge with lots of land, you'll need even more then 1 Gig of RAM. You can now play a full game of Civ to a space win in less then 4 hours. Most of my Space wins are averaging about 3 1/2 hours on normal sized worlds. That's a huge difference from Civ2, where I'd need a lot of time

Apologies if this has been reported before. I installed GC2 Beta on my freshly rebuilt game machine. No resources are being displayed within the game. The AI knows where they are, and builds resource harvestors on them. That's how I currently know where the resources are. Should I deinstall/reinstall?

More bad news... It seems that my game box got rootkitted/pwned through the Civ4 MP features. There's a Day Zero exploit out there, targetting Civ4 ports and services. Fun fun. Now I have to rebuild my game box's OS installation. This time around, when/if Civ4 goes onto it, I won't enable the MP aspects of it. Well, popular MP games are the #2 exploit right now, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that someone had already started exploiting Civ4 within its first world-wid

I don't think its possible, because the planet's actual tileage isn't generated until someone settles it. It would also appear that the Colony Base tile is set on a non-buildable tile.

It's got serious issues out of the box. That's according to Firaxis itself. But they'll be glad to know that one customer out of thousands got their product to work. . Seriously, Civ4's release hasn't been the painless thing Firaxis and Civ fans have wanted. After promising us for over three years that it would be, we... I wonder if anyone at Firaxis has died of embarassment yet? Or just drive by brickings? I wonder. Any

Take the time you need to, StarDock. We will continue to impatiently wait... but wait we will. This release is a bit rougher on them, from what they've told us. This is the build/baseline that is going to be reviewed for their ESRB rating. So I suppose its a "silver" release.

COWS AND RICE ARE NOT USELESS! Sorry about shouting. But Cows and Rice are useful. There isn't one thing on the map that is now worthless. Although... I haven't figured out how, after tech obsoletes a luxury (like fur, ivory, whale), that the AI wants to trade you that for something it needs from you like Iron, Wine, Gold, Wheat, Crab, etc. I like Civ4. Once they tighten up the code, this is going to be a very nice thing.

Civ4 has a lot of serious issues out of the box, even on monster gaming rigs. It is, literally, disk cancer. But, there is hope. If you go "Beta" (play like the Beta players), you'll find a very fine game. The way you play like a beta tester is to strip out all the wonder movies (there is no way in the UI to disable the playing of wonder movies, so you have to delete the darn thing from your HD currently if you truly want to copy the "hundreds" of beta testers out there that have work

Initial reports are that Civ4 isn't working for ~50% of the customers who have bought it. Little things like bad media (damaged CDs and DVDs), not working with most ATI current graphics (regardless of drivers and such), and bad disk images recorded to the CD/DVD. Then there's all the "wrong language version packed" (A significant number of North American customers are reporting their game media is entirely in French). For those that can actually get the game to install and

Is a +1 speed bonus more valuable on a gigantic or small map? I'd say it's more valuable on the small map! Why? because it means that you don't need to waste time on speed techs. Your ships are faster, its an immediate benefit for players on the map, in competition with the other empires, right from the start! On a gigantic map, its effect isn't as strong. You still need to research speed techs (so no gain versus small maps), and being on big maps, the effect is actually diluted. By t
