Random is nice because it is very difficult to pick characters or form pre-game strategies to defeat the enemy. In this game it may not be such a big deal (especially if you can still just hit tab to see what demigod they landed on), but in Warcraft 3 I hated playing random people because my starting strategies differed depending on what race the enemy picked (some races were better at picking up early rushes than others). When they went random, I had to go the extra mil
I'd really like to be able to see the citadel upgrade screen from anywhere on the map, just so I can see what allies may have bought while I was away from the citadel. It'd be really strategically valuable to know on the fly what upgrades your team has at certain moments.
Good suggestion
I personally like option 3.) Erebus can be targeted in mist if you drop the "see invis" ward. I think it would bring a little more stratergy to the game.
yeah, I thought for the longest time that actually already worked. It should.

The exchange rate for selling items is 80%; it is entirely feasible for a demi killing machine like erebus to get assassination EQ first then sell it for mass mana eq once the game settles down for the mist semi-exploit.

No, you don't get it. OK, I'm (US East) in a lobby with 3 other US East players, all with pings of 50 ms. Then an aussie comes in and has a ping of 300 ms. Sure, to him all of us have pings of 300 ms; he can complain about ALL OF US being the problem, but we all have pings of 50 ms with each other and 300 ms to him. Thus, he is the lagger (or I should say the player with the highest latency).

I do think mist needs a max time of like 10-20 seconds or something before he automatically pops out of it and it goes back to CD. BTW, kudos for an excellent OP. It was long, but interesting, well-researched, and broken up well.

No, but IMO if you're not going to give us a SP story mode or anything of the like... if you're going to make a game based entirely around 20-40 minute skirmishes on a limited set of maps, you really ought to give us the capacity to vary our skirmishes as much as possible. We ought to be able to not only make new maps but new items, new heroes, and new abilities. I'd also like to see more team configuration options. Why can't we play 4 player FFA? Or 3vs3vs3? Or

The best solution, IMO, is to allow a high pinger to play with you once . If he lags you down, don't play with him again. Otherwise, make an exception for him. Except for liq3. He's definitely getting booted on sight for me. Cheers to you too ZehDon.

This game does still have issues. Often it hangs on the "waiting for players" part of the startup sequence of custom games. Also, the menu interface often gets very slow, and when that happens often I can't even login because all the sudden my account name cannot be verified and I have to wait several hours to be able to log into MP again. Overall I'm still not satisfied with my online experience, but I take solace in how hard the devs are working to fix the problem.

I assume that a combination of this site ( http://www.gamereplays.org/community/index.php?showtopic=405375 ) and fraps might do the trick. That said, I've never tried replays myself and have heard it doesn't work too well. Good luck!

Congratulations man. :) I really wish this game had a better replay system so I could see it.

Not gonna lie; I know I was incredibly disappointed to find out the game offered such limited moddability. I mean, the game its based on (DotA) was itself a flipping mod. And the game DotA was based on (WC3) offered more custom maps than just about any game I know of, and that was released several years ago. It's really a shame.

Now that's more like it. :) Too bad none of it has anything to do with what I'm really interested, and what is most OT: latency problems with global routing. Anyway, the original statement was "it takes an average person about 800 ms to respond to anything happening in the game. ", I gave an example of something that takes far less than 800 ms to respond to, the original statement is thus false. Yeah, in chess it can take seconds to plan a move. I don't consider th
384ms sounds about right for recognition - double it and you've got the total time it takes for the brain to realise it's looking at something, identifying it, understanding the situation and making a decision based around all of the available factors. I'd say around 800ms is a fair figure.
Sounds like pretty much the definition of "pulling a number out of your arse"... don't conduct a formal study, or read about the

[e digicons]k1[/e] karma for Taurus Seriously, insulting an entire country because a few players kick you for what is truly a legitimate reason is lame on an epic scale.

true, but I think the idea is one guy engages another demigod and pulls their health down a bit. Not a lot; probably half to 3/4 would suffice. Then he gives the signal for a mass snipe. Bam, dead.

Their 5v5 most likely isn't working because of the person with the highest ping too . For now, the backbone is too borked for it to really work, but once its fixed high pingers will still be prone to lag 5v5 games down. It's like a car with no engine (networking code) and old, used, crappy oil (high pingers) not running well. Yeah, for the time being the car won't start because there's no engine, but even when the engine gets replaced the car most like

Snipe thing could work if they used voip to coordinate the shots. Beating a few regulus's in one game doesn't prove they aren't powerful together. Maybe some/all weren't that good. Maybe it wasn't the right map/game mode for it. Maybe they didn't have the favor items they needed yet.

8 Replies 2,822 Views

For me it depends. If people are popping into my game left and right, as host I feel it's my responsibility to help ensure the game is as playable and fun as possible. So I'll ask a few of the high pingers to leave. If things are going slow, sure we'll take a high pinger and see how it goes. If it goes poorly because of a player (usually the high pinger) I take note of the player and am hesitant to allow him in my custom games again.
Yes because as we all know 5v5 works perfectly so long as people have low pings. Exhibit number 3.
5vs5 doesn't work because the networking backbone of this game is barely functional at 3vs3. When the networking code in the game is semi-robust, you can bet 10 players with 50ms ping is bound to be more stable and playable than 10 players with 500ms ping. So pipe down.
Well the example I quoted (without source) was related to driving a car. When a kid jumps in front of your car what do you do? Brake? Steer away? That takes about 800 ms or as said above about 700. I think that situation is closer to "a demigod popped up behind me, what do I do, fight or run?" that it is to "I hear a sound and click a button". But debate it all you like, it's not really ontopic, so I appologize for brinin

162 Replies 307,935 Views

so worst case ("complicated reaction") it's 384 ms, half of the 800ms that was posted. The point is, it doesn't take any flipping 800 ms to respond to stimulus no matter how you look at it. Being off by (at least) a factor of 2 is pretty darn significant, and generally that happens when you pull numbers out of your arse. 75% of all statistics are made up, you know. I'm still not convinced seeing something on the screen and pushing a button on your computer qualifies
