I downloaded and installed the new Expansion Pack (v. 1.1) and am looking forward to playing a full game. I read the info on the improvements for GalCiv and notice something called "The Cheat Keys" that can be accessed from the menu. I'd thought that I'd see what would happen, if my starting set of planets had PQ of 200+. I did this immediately after the game got started. I set the Tax Rate to about 55% and the spend rate at 50%. I did not touch the Mil/Soc/Res slides. My s

I happen to like the idea of a moving party star minus the Death Star weaponry. As for me, I have often played good and used the Terror Star in a couple of games. Because of their movement rates, I don't like using them. Yes, I even used the tactic of piling up constructors and creating a Party star and watch it wreck havocs. :) I would like to try to just send those cultural party star cruising through the galaxy to see what would happen. Of course, they DO have to be able to defend

First let me give the needed information. I am playing GalCiv with the latest patch on Windows XP on a laptop with a 1024x768 screen size. I have the color depth set to the highest - 32 bits. I'm playing the game with 256MB of RAM and have the latest version of DirectX. The monitor is 15in. When I originally installed the game, everything worked fine. Later, I go to play a game and get a blank black screen with a slightly larger size mouse pointer. I hear clearly the multimedia soun

Ok, it seems that I was right about downloading the "Multimedia" stuff from SDC. The game seem to be working minus a couple of flickers on the main menu screen. This may not be related to my laptop being on all day. However, the desktop shortcut just did not work. I've clicked on it since downloading each game component - main game 1.05x, Bonus Pack and Multimedia. I did a solve by simply creating a "new" shortcut and pointed to the game executable. The game seem to work fine.

Barry, I'd love to join you in a serenade of "Memories". :-) I have a somewhat similar problem that seems related to the Flash menu. Earlier, I had downloaded & installed the latest patch for Galciv, Bonus Pack and Multimedia. I proceeded to click on the desktop icon and got the Flash menu. Clicked on game and got all the sounds but no picture or animation. I uninstalled and played with the vanilla install and the same thing. Note: I did not delete the deskt

If I was not playing GalCiv on a laptop; I'd go for the 1028x76 resolution. As it is, 800x600 is the best for me. This is especially so, since I have to use a screen magnifier to see most of what is on the screen. Strangely enough, I have no problem with the higher resoluton on a 17in. or higher monitor size. These higher resolution shows up great. As for seeing stuff, it is a simple matter of getting XP to give me larger fonts sizes and adding fonts like Clarendon BT & etc.. The sam

I haven't tried F9. I did get the zoom button to zoom in on the minimap. The rest of the main display was fine. I'm guessing that I'll have to reinstall GalCiv to get it back to where it should be. As for a second monitor, my old CRT is about 10 years old and normally displays graphic quite nicely. It is a CTX monitor that is cross platform compatible. My brother teasd me about it weighing 400lbs. LOL

Brad, I hope you're reading this thread because I found a possible bug. Last night, I decided to switch from the standard 1026x768 screen resolution to the 800x600 screen resolution so I can actually see the game info better. After the switch, I clicked on the game icon and got a much smaller mouse cursor and a black screen with the music and sound effect running beautifully. I moved the mouse to the right to see it go off screen. This did not even change when I

jK, I am not sure of what you are askig. Are you talking about the color depth setting? Mine is set to 32 bit. I'm only given a choice of 16 or 32 bit I can tell you that the graphic looks actually sharper and better on the laptop than on the old desktop PC. I was not talking about graphic quality. I love the quality on this puppy. :D I was refering to fact that everything looked so much tinier on the 1028 screen size. Incidentally, I am now using the 800x600 screen s

T, A 17in has a resolution of 1280x??? It is a good thing I didn't get a laptop with that size monitor. Stuff would be way too small. The only reason I can use this laptop is mainly because of ZoomText magnifying everything so I can generally see what is going on.

As it is, my laptop has two resolutions: 1024x768 and 800x600. Hmmm, I may experimet with the other resolution. Because I do have poor vision and the game doesn't seem to like ZoomText; I'll have to try the 800x600 screen size.

Recently, I made the trek from the hot desert of Arizona to the cool shore of New Jersey. Unfortunately, my PC ran into serious problem that led to a new pc - a HP Pavillion laptop with wireless capabilities. :) Great laptop; however I am not so sure of the video quality of GalCiv. What can I do to improve this? Yes, I can see the man screen but the minimap was so small that its toubh to see. The notebook sports a 15 in. screen and the old PC monitor is TOO BIG for the little desk tha I us

jn64, The only other game that had me up for 24 hours is Civ 3. The first time that I played it, I was soon to find myself staring out the window and it was 8 am and I started about 12 noon. When I played the original GalCiv, it was an absorbing game but not as addictive as it's current incarnation. Way to go, Brad!! The same goes for the rest of the crew. :-)

Grezt. The event is an interesting one, though. :-) Thankfully, it is not a show stopper and easily remedied. It'll be fun to discover where the Altairans are. I am also interested in seeing where the Dregins are, too.

I have to sympathize woth a number of the posters here. I have low vision and not color blindness. It has been my experience that changing the font style; as well as the color may make for not only a more readable text but one that can be dinstinct from other text. Ex. Verdana + Green = Acceptable Trade Arrus Blk BT+ Yellow = Not acceptable You could also add a visual cue ala the alien that your dealing with.

Ok, I just had a strange event show up. In it, I get accused of accidentally insulting the wife of an Altairan ambassador and now have a war. In of itself, this is a good reason to have espioage going; however, there is ONE PROBLEM. I have yet to encounter the Altairans! That is right, I have only encountered the Dregini and no one else and suddenly this happens. Would it not have been more correct for this event to only involve the race that I do know? Incidentally, I haven't invest

So, the 20% is really good only on tiny galaxies? I've pretty much gone back to doin what you basically described. That strategy sounded interesting, so I thought I'd experiment. Liked the pop growth but not the ever growing deficit.

In another thread, I notice someone saying that they keep their tax rate at 20%. I thought that I'd give it a try. I'm playing in a gigantic galaxy and the AIs are set to "Normal". I'm currently in the year 2183 and am getting an ever increasing budget deficit. Yes, my pop is going up at an average of .3 per turn. The spend rate is left at 50%. What am I missing with this strategy? Normally, I set the tax rate to close to 60 where spend is 50.

The one game that I had managed to use Terror Star, I certainly had a lot of fun in using them. I mainly used it for culture flipping and didn't blow up any stars. My only gripe was in how slow they were in getting to a destination. I was playing in a gigantic galaxy and I was on the bottom and my targets were well up and to the left of me. By the time I get anywhere near the destination, the planet has already flipped to my side or is beaten by someone else.

On this Memorial Day, let me encourage you to take the time to remember those who served our country in the recently finished Iraq war and those who served in previous wars: Vietnam, Korea, Gulf War ('91) and etc. They gave up their time and sometimes their lives to serve in all of these conflicts. Let's also remember and give thanks to those non combatants who went to those places, too. I, for one, do give thanks and appreciate what these people did in all of the conflicts that the
