Wombat, I disagree with the fact that the companies pay. It's the customers who end up paying. To develop great graphics, you need the insurance the game will sell because it will cost more. So we can have games with deep gameplay and good graphics, but we won't get many of these, because they must sell. Also consider nowadays' graphics are much harder to make than before. The first computer games had no artist in the team. It was plain text, ascii pictures. Now, the trend is more graphic ar

Just ask Stardock to provide event hooks for creating planets and anomalies instead of just win/lose conditions. We could script these techs into something worht having with the scenario editor. Controlled wormholes would mean you can create one somewhere, but if you go through it, you do'nt know where you end. Would be very useful as a defensive weapon to put around your star systems, as it'd require survey ships/rangers to take them out, but not as an offensive weapon.

Hard coded is hard coded. Developpers can always provide a hook for everything afterwards, maybe in a patch or XPack, but until then it can't be done. Even on a game like CallToPower2 where there is a hyper powerful scripting language, some things just couldn't be done (now, of course, as the source code is available, everything is possible, but people would rather enrich the scripting language than hard code more stuff).

It's basically all text files. There's a link around in this forum to Hawaii5O's program which makes life easier (in particular, Galciv uses fixed numbers for many things, which makes it very painful to mod, but the editor does renumbering for you). Check the Galciv Writer thread (sticky). [Message Edited]

To answer shortly, none of what you want is moddable now. You can however create new starting abilities, and pick them, which can give you more benefits, but the ai may pick them too. Mods are currently 'limited' to adding/changing events (most often colonisation), UP votes (?), ships, political parties, techs, social improvements.

Another point with Nethack is that this game can get you realy immerged into it despite the graphics. Note that modern versions of the game allow you to use tiles instead of ascii. No more @ but a small picture of a monk or whatnot. The trned nowadays is to use graphics to immerge people in the world rather than gameplay. Compare Nethack with Morrowind: Both are RPGs. One is old, has the ugliest graphics you can think of, but allows for immersion through rich gameplay and a lot of objects wi
Umm, something 20+ years old is a fair comparison? That's the same argument as "go drive a model t-ford then you will appreciate your current unreliable & unsafe car".
Considering I currently play more Nethack than Galciv, I found it appropriate. Whether it's 20 year old or not, it's still in my opinion one of the very best computer games available. I also play chess and Go, which are both centuries old, and don't think that their user interface stinks when I play agains
I almost never play out a full game of Civ3 once I know I can win.
I've found civ3 end game is mostly tedious. I'm probably not going to finish any civ3 game I play. You have to either kill everyone fast or let it last forever. Maybe I should have tried on the easiest level to see if there's a cutscene or something for a military conquest (vs. diplomatic/spacelaunch). Galciv's military victory can be tedious too, that's why I mostly do alliance victories.

They plan to go 3D for galciv2 so this one will probably get zooming stuff, but when it's out, you can bet every other game has it too. If you feel galciv graphics are poor, play nethack for one hour and go back to galciv, you'll love its graphics. I'm personnally quite happy with the graphics, as I think flashy graphics actually hurt the game (I don't want to spend time looking at ground battles - of course I could probably skip it, but this means money invested in graphics is wasted to
I have also almost completely stopped researching military and propulsion techs. I will occassionally research phasers for an early rush, otherwise I count on getting all the red/blue techs from trade. (Though occassionally I'll need to research battleships (for combat transports) or dreadnought for AMMS
That's what I do too. I never found anything above AMMs of much use, though I'll let conquered planets building overlords finish them in order to sell the ships for a pr
Just so we're clear:The expansion pack will NOT be available at stores. Only through GalCiv.com
Brad, you should make this clearer than it is now, in a thread whose title is more interesting than this one (it's really becuase I saw Frogboy was the author that I read it). I think most people interested in the expansion pack aren't aware of anything said here because the title is bad. An 'important' or somesuch would help the thread visibility IMHO. (of course I may be tota
See, now minors are majors who can't win.
I agree with this, though it was already the case before. I-League and Fundamentalists have always been dangerous. It would be good if a military victory was achieved only when all minors were eradicated. Alliance would need them to be allies too. Culture and Tech victories don't need change.

Starbases cost money to operate and to maintain. If you want cash, don't build any except maybe trade starbases, and only in sectors where it is very likely that freighters go through often (a starbase gives money only when the minifreighter is in the same sector). You need high population and good morale in order to be able to earn money. Not touching the sliders is definitely going to ruin you. What to do: 1)Increase population. 1.1)This requires morale, so LOWER tax rate
Oh I meant to mention that everytime they declare war on me they give me that same message that you got, so it seemed to have little to do with my actual military might.
I wonder if there might be a bug which leads the Torians to always use that message instead of the correct one? This might explain things? On my second game, the ai behaved mostly as usual, except maybe now in the late game the relations are dropping fast, but it's too late for them, I'm already stron

I started my first 1.12 game - small maso. Poor start, only 1 PQ15 planet inside Sol system, 2 PQ14 nearby. Torians had 4 star systems, Drengins had 2, all of them with their usual PQ15+maso bonus planets. The other civs had only one star. Everything goes well, I have no military as usual, trade a lot (3 of my 4 routes) with the Torians, and have 1 route with the Drengins. Everyone is between neutral and warm with me. Suddenly, the Torians say something along the lines "We think it'
