And they could have done more with the ranking system. Make winning a game on certain high difficulty levels a prereq for higher rankings ie commander, captain, commodore, etc. That would have been cool too. That would give incentive to play harder games.

Force: All I was pointing out was that scores were not additive. Two scores of 9000 do not add to 18000. They add up to 18000/1.414 in your example. That's all I was implying. The square root formula makes them somewhat less than completely additive thus lessening the chance of a high score merely through games played vs a mere arithmetic addition. Actually, having the square root in the formula addresses your first complaint. It limits (to some extent though not completely) the additive effect of more games played. I too would like to see each size ranked as I don't think there is an "adjustment" that could be even here. You'd inevitably favor one size over the other. But I don't think I'd like top 3 games. And I always thought there should be a system of ranks (lieutenant, commander that required wins at certain difficulties to advance. That would have been way cool. I believe it is too hard to take into account all the things that occur to truly balance map size. None of the TBS games I know of did that. My top SMAC scores were always on the biggest map size. We can talk about size balancing, but I doubt there is truly a way to make it "even" One size will always be rewarded vs another no matter what you do. Too many variables. The biggest issues I have with starbases are in order: 1. Multiple starbases in a sector with the same modules. It just seems cheesy and unrealistic for someone to build 3 bases each with fully functional pleasure palaces for example. At bare minimum, there should be diminishing returns for this. IE first fully functional, second 1/2, third 1/4 fourth zero. Something like that. I don't like the reduced maintence Idea via planetary improvements or otherwise. It runs counter
