Hi, any chance you could submit a debug report? Head to About → troubleshooting → submit report, and our team can take a look
Dr W - Fences Support
Great! Yes based on what we saw we did find one “this should never happen” type situation that could in theory result in something like this, and improved it so that I could for-sure never happen, so with luck this will be resolved! Thank you for the report
Hi gizmoo2000, had any chance to check out the debug copy above? Thanks for any insights
This will happen if the product is not activated correctly. Please open the configuration dialog and verify the program is activated?
@ timurborn, the CPU - does it spike upon mouseover and then go back down? Or does it remain elevated after you've moused away from the Fence group?
Hi - unfortunately no not at this time; in all of the display modes the unselected tabs are dimmed slightly as to indicate which tab is selected.
Wow, indeed, that is very odd. Ok WELL. Hopefully this new build gives some insight. It will show as v6.0.2.6 if you hover over the version in About https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/928s2nfgsgz28tv68ypnr/UpdatePatcher_Debug_2025_08_18__9_04_21_pm.exe?rlkey=mo6zlti3a5nlmrh0dgojba8ex&dl=1 <img src="https://cdn.stardock.
Hi gizmoo2000 – thank you for the report. We looked through it, and based on what we found are going to add some addition debug output to see if we can narrow down where this is changing. Based on what's in the log, we see it start up with this, below. The program outputs every time it loads a group's data. The first entry is this, which is shortly after the first reboot after turning the logging back on 2025-08-09 01:08:45,856 - LoadG
Aye, disappointing Andy ty for letting us know. This is a very tricky one to debug as it sounds like a timing issue with a matter of milliseconds. Logging still probably the next step. It sounds like you've disassembled the situation. But if you put it back, *immediately* after it occurring, open the Fences Config → About → Troubleshooting → Upload error report. And likewise, beforehand as we did before, Fences Config → About → Troubleshooting → E
Yes this should definitely not be happening. Thank you for sharing the screenshots for point of reference, so that we know what it SHOULD look like. What is unclear is: When you load a backup, it loads that specific configuration into the registry and reloads settings from scratch. There is no difference between that and restarting your computer. So. Trying to figure it out. I don't know that the logs have enough info to show this, but since we want to get
Hi gizmoo, the team was able to review your log, but word is that it was difficult to sort out what was the action you were intending. The log and the status was sent, but would it be possible to include in the report description or here what the specific names that you had reordered, i.e. was expected, was happened. Mose useful might be: - Reorder, wait ~20 seconds (it can take 5-20 seconds to save on delay) - Capture a backup - Reboot - Capture a back
Hi Geech, sorry for the delay – we did escalate this on our end and upon looking into the fences_debug_info_shellext.txt file (advanced loggin) submitted, we saw only a few minutes worth recorded. Specifically, the app loads once and then proceeds normally for about 3 minutes, after which point the log was captured. Likewise, no crash dumps were captured which was also surprising. The team expected to see at least 3 app startups based on your report – one from the reboot afte
Hi Geed thanks for posting this. So to be clear, if you move the folder icon outside of a Fence this does not occur? (Or from troubleshooting, steps, sound like it does regardless of where it in on desktop?) Sounds like you've tried turning Fences off with the "Enable Fences" checkbox, and it still happens when disabled? <img src="https://cdn.stardock.us/forums/6/50/650776/b90867e6-73ed-46ca-820a-dcc3fa8d80d4.png" width="446" height="495"
Hi- I realize you can’t share what’s in the Fence but can you describe the nature of the situation? Is it about people not casually overseeing what’s in the Fence when the desktop appears? If the titles themselves were replaced with “********” unless the mouse is hovered over the fence for a few seconds does that resolve the situation?
Correction sorry, Fences 6 standalone, which is priced $10/yr, supports ARM out of the box. Sorry for the confusion Fences 5 required Object Desktop for its experimental/beta ARM support, and Fences 6 made it official without Object Desktop.
Thanks Zhrakkan for the clarity. Something that hopefully doesn't catch you off guard, but a followup question on your expectations: Our permanent licenses are meant for being a permanent license of that given current version. So, Fences 6, which was released a couple months ago. These days we do a major new version generally every 1.5-2yrs, and then try to continue support for at least a year or more after that (especially for major breaks; typically Fence
I guess the question moreso being – if they saw it at all and misunderstood it, or didn't see it at all, just saw the "Subscription" stuff before even looking at the buttons and figured there was not a one-time purchase available etc. Some folks might not know what a permanent license means even if there's a button, since we've already said "1 year subscription", etc. So larger text, buttons etc doesn't necessarily resolve the issue.
Hi, yes we do offer a permanent license for that specific version (v6 etc); It’s underneath the buy button. Since you didn’t see this and came here to ask, seeing it here now, is there a way we could have made this more apparent?
+1 to this, could you inch it down little by little until you feel some resistance? I assume that snapping is enabled in the layout tab. Seeing you have an animated wallpaper program it’s almost certainly related to that being installed. Which app are you using, and are you using multiple monitors? Is that DeskScapes or another app
Hi geech, sorry to hear this. Can we get you to try to capture some logs so we can see if it has any hints? (1) Turn on advanced logging. You can do this from About → Troubleshooting (2) Reboot or log off & on (3) Reproduce issue a couple of times. (4) Head back to About → Troubleshooting and select Upload Log, being sure to reference this post & your username Not sure if it'll show anything, but, we'll see.
Hello all- A hidden option has been added for an upcoming version, v6.02 and onward. You can enable it by setting DisableCreateFolderPortalHere to a DWORD of 1, at the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Fences\Settings We'll be evaluating where to perhaps put this option in the UI, without adding too much of a mess to the Folder Portals area.
Virtual Desktops present a great deal of compatibility issues, with the interface changing frequently with Windows updates as well as a very long tail of old interfaces to support, and it's all quite unofficial as Microsoft does not officially support any of this. So! It's something we're looking at and would like to do, but currently no timeline for availability or R&D completion.
Hi, followup question. What is the system DPI, and how many monitors? Do any monitors have a different DPI? Does this generally happen when waking the monitor from sleep etc? For the resized ones, does moving the Fence group by even say a single pixel resolve the issue? Thanks for the help
Hi dudechester just checking in to see if you've gotten to take a look. We just released v6.01 beta which includes this, and the link with the patcher above is more or less identical. We think we've solved at least a couple of the issues you've mentioned.
Hi Andy just checking in to see if this helped. We just released v6.01 beta which includes this, and the link with the patcher above is more or less identical.
