Don't know if there's a "better" way. I know I prefer to trade for them but I wouldn't dream of saying my opinion here was definitive.

Hey, um... stupid, you might find this tool useful. http://www.galciv.com/metaverse/simulator.asp It simulates combats and tells you what the expected outcome is. Give it a try, and it will show you that you should have expected your Corvettes to get creamed. The dreadnaught taking out two higher-level ships is weird, but it might just have been bad luck. I don't see it happen very often with gravity accelerators--the speed boost would be noticable. Not sure about other trade goods though.
