Managed to get in and say high to Kit, Tal-Der and a drunken Jedi who shall remain nameless. Problem with coming in from the Southern Hemisphere - 6pm my time, 3am for Kit! Probably not a realistic option for ANZACs, but nice to stop by!

Siders - there's such a lot for you to come to grips with, it's tough to know where to start. Gal Civ forces you to play an all-round game - you have to keep paying attention to morale, economy and where you are in comparison to other civs. They'll come after you if, say, you don't have enough military development - you look like easy pickings. Rather than try and give you a load of tips - hunt down the stategy guide (a collaboration by users) - you should find a sticky in the forum telling you

I think you have to look at the overall enjoyment factor for those who participate regularly here. In any ladder situation, there can be only one leader, and GROSS certainly deserve the top spot. No one expects GROSS to suddenly commit hari-kiri so the rest of us can feel useful. Some of the ANZACs are, I think, a little frustrated in the locality empire closing us off to potential recruits - and a theme empire might be more fun for those of us with...er...literary intentions as well. Just following through from the ANZAC thread - I'd echo Drop Bear's thoughts; I love ANZAC's cultural theme but want to freshen up, and also want the chance to attract new players - little chance of that with a locality empire. One problem is coalescing empires, and ending up with 2-3 huge ones - no good for the Metaverse or us, I think. Colour and diversity are important.

Great discussion - just thought I'd add a few thoughts. I must say theme based empires attract me too, although I think, with effort, that ANZAC has managed to bridge some of the apparent divide in the current theme/locality debate. My part in that was by deliberately choosing cultural icons (sheep, koala bears, boomerangs, wiggles, bananas-in-pyjamas) that would probably be recognised in other places - it's a cultural theme rather than a latitude and longitude. I'm just floating a boat here, following a suggestion by Ray regarding theme vs locality empires. I looked down the list of empires, which peters out around the 200 mark, and distilled all that I could identify positively as locality based. The Commonwealth could be an overriding identifier (besides, I liked the SF show - come aboard the Andromeda Ascendant to recreate the Commonwealth!). At the risk of embarrassing myself totally, I do remember a rocker by the name of Jade Hurley (I think) back in the 70's - any relation? I play small games as it suits my gaming time and temperament; I hate labouring over a huge map when the result is essentially not in doubt. I play small maps, which I can usually complete in an evening - it's like an upgraded chess match - tough, tight battle, and come back to something fresh and new the next day.
