I also think Staffa's contribution is very useful, but it isn't always cool - there was a thread (now removed, I see) where Brad and Staffa had a ding dong over suspiciously hacked (?) tech trees in his/her games. Disputing the rules, eh? Very kiwi?....{bowls underarm delivery and runs away} I'd agree with the comments re scoring though, I just completed a mil victory for 700 odd Metaverse points (said 1024 on my screen prior to submission) and a cultural victory for 45 points (same sma

Finally planed a halfway decent score - sorry for not pulling my weight (some of my recent experiences looking more like Gallipoli than Iraq). Can you wiser heads help me with build orders for your planets? What are your 'must have' improvements? Which ones are really worth the maintainence cost? MUST lay the smack down on GROSS...... >:(

Hey 4D - I'm with you, but if you've caught any of the discussion on other threads about Metaverse scoring, you'd realise it's time to chill about the scoring situation. It seems some players have not only been milking scores, but submitting games that have been hacked or modded to add to their Metaverse score. I've been busy lately (and am not a great player anyway) - but I'd sit back and just enjoy being part of the ANZAC crew. Lets's keep going for fun, sure, but don't get toooooo stressed...
The other level is trust on a player to player level, as in honor and a reputation for fair play. If we encourage that as a player community, that is what we will mostly get, a majority who cause no problems with cheese-of-the-day
This echos my sentiments from the previous thread - treat the Metaverse as an HONOUR system, and let Stardock get on with making a better game, rather than bashing their heads against the insoluble problem of creating a ranking system that is co
If you think the metaverse is bad or broken, you don't have to participate in it.
Absolutely correct. I need only refer you to the Diablo experience of duplicated characters, duplicated items, etc and their ultimate fix seemed to be to simply reset the servers. To me, the Metaverse is an HONOUR system - I'm not impressed with people screwing around, hacking and modding the game and cheesing it then hiding behind the justification: "I did it because I could." Here

I'd also pay attention to cultural influence - I had a good game going until the Yor went on the rampage (but not against me) - but the resulting increase in influence meant that my planets all flipped over in a bloodless coup. Starbases that have cultural influence bonuses and news centres that grant 'cultural resistance' also help a lot.

Re #9: And fair enough too, Frogboy - I'd prefer the precious work time of Stardock employees to go towards making enhancements to the game, not closing cheating loopholes. My God, I didn't even know there WERE 'mods' that made life easier - I guess I'll just get less anxious about who's leading the Metaverse. This is a little like the 'drugs in sport' issue - we know some athletes are taking short cuts, but does that mean everyone else should to keep the playing field 'level' (but highly skewed
I thought i was the only one who ever heard of Lensman books
No way Don - those and books like them led me into a long love affair with science fiction, then computing and I guess into SF gaming. I still remember when Kimball Kinnison was Civilisation's No.1 citizen! Geez, I think I'll name the next dreadnaught I build the "Dauntless" just for old times sake....

Thanks guys - even following your suggestions didn't save me, I'm afraid. I backtracked to an autosave just around the time planets started falling, built copious numbers of starbases and news centres - but the planets just fell like dominos. All this after sweating over a Gigantic map...grrrr....Ah well, an excellent lesson learned though.

Echo that welcome - I think GalCiv can be enjoyed all the way from the 'beer and pretzels' small game to the large, all-consuming titanic conquest. Think about joining an Empire for extra laughs - the ANZAC Empire welcomes all those Aussies, Kiwis, and anyone else with a vague connection to things Antipodean! Welcome!

Need a little help here - ran slap bang into a problem in a gigantic game with planets peeling off to join the tin men Yor. I thought I'd built up a nice stable empire; well defended, econ OK, research powered up searching for the final frontier - now all my juicy planets are departing! Any strategies/research/structures that other are using as culrutal defence? How can I pull these rebel scum back into line!!

Kylie who? Ah, Pontius...just to give you another opinion, I think it was Kylie doing a duet with Justin Timberlake at some awards ceremony recently. When asked to rate Kylie's ass, Justin replied: "On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 53." A wet hymen is no match for the Ass of Kylie.

Coffeedragon:
They do get 50 points. Zero is for losing. If they play 10 games at Easy, they will have 500 points, but that´s the ceiling, as long as they don´t get serious.
Sorry - my mistake! That makes sense of course. (I should ensure adequate blood caffiene levels before posting). With respect to the top ten scores, though, since we both agree there are diminishing returns, how does this impact the whole Metaverse? Isn't scoring primarily about the Metaverse, and ho

You are currently posting to the strategy guide ;) I'm not the greatest strategist, but I find my games go in waves: initially, a land grab where I set production to 100% colony ships and strike out to plant the flag on as many places as possible. My income falls steadily until I have a decent number of planets, when I switch to 100% research to make up some lost tech ground. I usually manipulate my tax/spend to ensure a positive net income per round while my research is going full ste

I think this has some really good ideas to develop! Early reflections: I think you should extend your Difficulty/Map Size criteria all the way down to Easy/Tiny maps - many new players start this way and still need to be rewarded for effort, rather than just get a fat zero until they work up to Normal. I know what you mean about 'perseverance' bonus - the map size thing is interesting, because I have found (with admittedly milited experience) that small/tiny maps encourage a co

Kiwi Greg: I agree completely - I'm currently trying a gigantic game (on a low difficulty level), partly after encouragement from one of your earlier posts. I've got 38% of the galaxy and am basically trying to build enough infrastructure and defence to wall myself off while I search for the final frontier (although I prefer to call it Transcend - I'm an old Alpha Centauri player). If you're going to do it efficiently and still defend when the other civs come calling, it takes time and planning,

I take your point Ellestar, but I think it reduces everything to the PQ as a 'lowest common denominator' in valuing victory. Of course, a powerful economy can drive tech, mil AND cultural wins - but surely we could be more sophisticated in measurement? If you're a good commander, shouldn't you be rewarded if you never lose an engagement, rather than having a big enough economy to just throw units at the enemy until you exhaust them? Why not just say a win at beginner=1000 pts, win at cr

Hey, don't sweat - I'm not good enough at the game to take issue with the way anyone else plays. I must say that computing today does inspire an obsessive/compulsive trait, though - I'm forever making sure I have the latest patch/driver for vid card, sound, critical updates, whatever. When I bought GalCiv I just autoupdated on StarDock and presume I'm playing on the latest version. I think we're victims of Stardock's brilliant support, although I would not really like to get to the stage of game

774 Replies 18,964 Views

I appreciate where you're heading, but I still think you need to step back from the PQ issue in isolation and consider WHAT you are rewarding and WHY. The issues seem to be: 1. What constitutes a win? 2. How to distinguish 'better' and 'worse' wins? 3. How to make one person's wins comparable with another's - i.e. the Metaverse issue. I suspect we wouldn't be having this discussion if there were no Metaverse! A military conquest should reward ground captured, and take i

Count me in too - although here in Australia it seemed to get very harsh treatment by our networks; screened late, episodes out of order, etc (the fate of much sci-fi on our screens down here, unfortunately). I also reckon there are some SF lit fans at Stardock - I came across a planet called Palain Seven, which if I remember hails from the 'Lensman" series of books by E.E. Smith (real gung ho 1950's stuff).

Staffa - just wanted to commend your thoughtful work so far on scoring issues, having read other threads. With respect to the above, don't you think this would just lead to 'planet rushing', rather than population rushing? That is, if you are going to be rewarded for each planet above PQ 15, say - then players on gigantic maps are going to do their initial colonisation, then nearing the end game go out of their way to 'back fill' all those PQ14 and 15 planets they hadn't bothered with previously

Hey 4D - Kylie....old?...saggy?...NOOOOOOOO!!!! The most famous ass in the world? Say it isn't so! On other news, Chris and Pontius seem to be continuing their fractured relationship spanning space, time zones and multiple threads, the software developers are still at E3, the ANZAC Empire flourishes while the noxious denizens of GROSS flounder despite a spin machine in full press, and the Aussie cricket team still wins every game it plays. Cheers, mate!
