Theoden searches for the Holy Grail. OK, don't want to turn your thread into a Monty Python skit. LOL. I played rare maso with max diplomacy picks (+60) and populist (+20 diplo and +20 morale) for about 6 games of tiny and 1 game of small recently. This is my favorite setting of all time. On large maps, I add speed +1 and on tiny I add 5% PQ, +10 morale, and +10 influence. Vincible uses the sames picks - so like I said, I must be doing something right. ;) Cheesey tactics are in

I just got my Nov 2003 Computer Gaming World (CGW) magazine this week. Gal Civ, which they gave a 4.5 out of 5 stars and "editor's choice" recommendation in a very brief review some time ago, is now in the Top 20 (number 19). CGW is where I found out about Gal Civ and then I ordered Gal Civ from amazon.com From CGW, the "top 20 is obtained from a survery of reader's favorite games from the last six months. To vote, visit the website at" www.computergaming.com or http://www.gamers.com/cg

Theoden, thank you for the maso info. I just got done disagreeing with LDiCesare in another thread when he said that maso tiny is easy. IMO, no maso is "easy". For me, every maso at any size is harder than sub-maso at any size. Please, don't anyone go telling Frogboy that maso is "easy". LOL. But, maso is a blast even though I never dominate. It is a brand new game for me compared to sub-maso and since the scoring is generous, I no longer feel the need to research the entire tech tree (
Tiny maso is easy
For you, it may be. But, the majority of Gal Civ players play at levels less than maso because maso is too hard. The new 1.1 maso tiny scores are somewhere in the huge/gigantic crippling range (20 to 25k). Personally, I find maso MUCH harder than sub-maso of any size because of the cash nerf and AI bonuses. My crippling, large game went anomalous because of a "too much money flag" so I finally moved to maso and it took repeated games at tiny to get the e

Lord Orphon I got an anomalous score on a large, crippling because of a money trigger (sent my save game in to Cari). It seemed just like all the other sub-maso games I played recently except it was going better than usual. When you try to "retire" from a flagged game you will also notice zero mpts. Perhaps you can reload an old saved game before you triggered the flag and it might work. I tried to do this but the old save shortly went zero mpts and so I just gave up on this game and th

I think the racial picks abilities only default to the last game. After you hit reset and get back your 10 points, I think you have to re-allocate them. Once they are re-allocated, they stay there until you hit reset again. I hope I am answering the right question and that this helps. :) Rick

Theoden, glad everyone is OK and hope everyone recovers soon. :) Congrats to FOTR for 2 million. When GROSS got 1 million before anyone else, I was determined to try to help FOTR read 2 million first so this is very sweet. OK, it's off to 3 million for the FOTR. Ray congrats on 300k in the pp. Sorry that isn't enough for fleet admiral so guess you will have to keep playing until you get 400k [insert visual image of the FOTR empire dancing happily and cheering, "Go Ray" :D]

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have a better feel for embassies and scouts now. My 5th maso game was very rocky. The Yor made the diplo translators and then the Yor were destroyed before I could afford them - 4 trade goods to swap for diplo translators weren't enough :SURPRISED: Then the Dregnin who I bribed to start wars actually starting winning them all and got 5 planets compared to my 2. In spite of keeping everyone at war and some cash-flow from trade, the Drengin go

Does anyone build scouts or is that a waste on maso? Should one just scout with the survery ship Hero? Does anyone build embassy? Is it cost-effective? Build only on Earth or only on planet in danger of flipping or not at all? Thanks. I am starting to have a decent (not great) cash-flow. Last game, was able to afford two terror stars for the endgame finale. :) Rick

After writing the above I did a quick scan of the top 50 average score players to try to find the biggest games. I counted only four players who have ever scored 50k or more in any single game. Unless you are Ray, who can do this on huge, this means a gigantic maso victory on 1.1. Man, that sounds difficult in both skill and stamina. I suggest these are the best players at the moment. Rick

Thank you very much vincible and Ray. I am taking notes. :) Vincible, today's game went a little better. I waited to start the wars every time I saw in the "treaties section" that an AI had started a trade route. When I saw the yellow line between two AIs, I said, "OK now you two have to go to war". It worked reasonably well because I certainly had more trade money today on my third maso game than on the first two. Also with the cash flow better, it is more likely one can get the unique

Thanks Ray & vincible. This is the first time I have understood the "culture bombing through colonization". :) I am a brand new maso player (3 tiny games). I can't seem to get my act together to rush very well and my frigates get blasted by the computer's battle axes when I rush on maso. My "semi-successful" rush is to use a transport or battle transport like a vulture swooping in when the defense is knocked out by another AI. So, yes, I culture bomb on tiny usually using multi

Gerraken, you are a really important part of the Gal Civ community and as always, your editorials are very thoughtful and interesting. Mostly, I agree with you. The new scoring in 1.1 should have never, ever made sub-maso or sub-crippling scores go down. It just seems like an un-necessary psychological bummer for newer players and those who are happy playing at their preferred levels. I also think the maso bump is a little generous. But, maso is very, very hard and (at least for me) - MUCH harder
Gauge the need and rush them if necessary (over the longest period).
Ray, this is 19 in your walk-through tutorial post above. I am confused. Could you expand or rephrase this? Thanks. About the cash flow problem on maso . . . Thanks vincible and Ray. I still need more help. My first batch of research after getting the yellow (comm, universal translator, & diplo) is the "green tech" (med, basic, improved). I then trade the green techs for other techs (and freigh
