Theoden - Thanks for the tips. Vincible - I like strategy games (obviously) and RPGs. I've played through Baldur's Gate / Icewind Dale / Planescape already and enjoyed them... I also need a game that runs offline, since I don't have network coverage in the family room.... I'd be up for trying Star Control / Space Empires - I guess... but I was hoping for something different. What I really need is to hook Mrs. Pax on a game, so I can play guilt free. The only

Thanks Professor! The links were helpful, tough I couldn't use my day job resources because I'm finishing one other job before I resume working for the man on Dec 19. (I am starting my employment with a paid two week vacation though...) Welcome, Jeff! BTW: The town took out my pond yesterday.... as they say, I fought the law and the law won. Anyone want to buy a slightly used gazebo? Cheers, Cypher

Good story, Piers! Hey, I got a question for our academics. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing... I was asked by a client about normalization. The client knows there are five normal forms. I told him his data was in 3rd normal form - and that was perfect for his app. He wants to know what it would take to get the data into a higher form. I told him that higher forms are mostly academic exercises, but don't have anything non-technical to prove my point. Either of you have any

Just wanted to bump this thread. I actually haven't noticed any differences in the AI in 1.12. I have noticed more CTDs though... I am finding maxing pop is incredibly useful, with this strategy there are three things I'll try to control: 1. Diplo translaters 2. Aphro 3. Galactic Stock Exchange I will always trade for the other TGs (particularly Grav Accelerators), but I don't find them as critical to success. I can also live without the Galactic Stock Exchange,

Good morning / evening, Had a great weekend with my family... Ashlyn appreciated all the Birthday gifts, particularly to the new mini-RPG from Sergeant Hard and the Tri-stronium Steel Bib. The frictionless socks are also a big hit as we can't get her to wear normal socks. Mrs. Pax is saving the Special Forces Barbie Dolls until Ashlyn gets older and there small plastic weapons may pose a choking hazard. In my weekend skirmishes with the jedi, I was able to capture a mini-fr

I'm contemplating crumpling my hobbit into a ball and throwing the hobbit in a soccer-style throw-in. I practiced the twirl and hurl approach until my first hobbit got away. This approach has two main drawbacks. 1. I got dizzy. 2. The hobbit was not stunned and I had to run him down between throws. Good luck, everyone!

Piers -write Ben or any of us and we'll let you know. It's not what you think... Quack is the head of the OTHER Q branch. Jaws, Hurley, and Wombat -- Glad to hear the mission came off successfully on the 20th... -Cypher

Congrats Piers! - I didn't win at normal for the first few games. I was in Wombat mode last night, played through three games in a sitting while Mrs. Pax was out. My paws are bleeding. ;) The alliance option was nice for game one because it was a snoozer. I played too well in the early game and mop up would not have been interesting. Cheers, Cypher

Sirian- I agree with you, but I think you misunderstood my style of play. I've very aggressive and will attack a maso AI typically in a non-Alpha Strike -- hence, I still deal with their military. It seems cheesy to win culturally when they have 5 times the military and could crush you if they were smart enough to see that. I only enjoy winning if my win makes sense... othewise I feel like I beat the game mechanics and not the game. -Cypher

I think the problem with cultural bombing is one we're making because we all have turned off cultural victory. To win a cultural victory, you have to control influence in 90% of the sectors and not be at war. This is REALLY easy for a decent player, and it generally occurs for me way before I start flipping planets (and occassionally before I actually feel I've 'won' the game on maso) Perhaps, the reason the AI is so weak is that my design, the 90% of systems has typically

I really WANT to finish my game and load 1.12. Unfortunately today is Mrs. Pax's birthday and Friday is Ashlyn's first birthday-- playing GalCiv on either day will probably result in my sleeping on the couch. Cheers, Cypher

Bakka - I suppose playing good is an aspect of default AI alignments. The Drendin and Yor are really only dangerous if they get strong early in the game and can threaten or conquer other AIs. Typically, your alignment will be close to neutral by the time you can decide they don't threaten you. The Arceans also seem to expand fast, but rarely bother defending their planets, which means a good player with take them out -- or another AI will take them out. This leaves

I know a lot of us are addicted to the Statbot. http://idle.thehueys.com/midwest/empireapp.php I don't know if Stardock has noticed this tool yet, but it provides pretty much any stat you could want to know about the games submitted to the Metaverse. It obviously took a good amount of work to construct... I'd like to nominate KasualKid for his work. Regards, Cypher
