Well, I haven't really found the need to go all out on the colony rush. I almost find I have an easier time managing my economy and such with less planets, and on the map sizes I play there aren't *that* many to colonize anyway. Heck, on tiny you usually don't even need to build colony ships (even when playing abundant). I don't like lowering my research spending to 0 because then I *do* get waaaay far behind the AI in tech and have a hard time catching up. I've tried that tactic before (whe

Well, sure I'll share with you all what I do, but I don't think my strategies would necessarily work with the huge and gigantic map sizes, just so you know. But since I don't play those sizes, I don't care. :) Anyway, I have been playing around with the starting options quite a bit, but this is what I'm doing currently (I think--if the points don't add up it's 'cause I'm trying to remember this from memory): Technologists Party, Research +10, Trade +20, Influence +10 and Diplo +60.

I still like SMAC, though it irks me they never fixed some of the most glaring bugs in that game (like the game crashing when your air superiority unit actually tries to defend your city)... Ah well. I'll have to check out the SEIV demo. I'm house-sitting with no galciv this week so maybe that can keep me occupied in the meantime. :D

Hmmm, how odd. I really don't know what I'm doing differently to have drastically increased my ability to culture-flip. :) Oh well, I'm not gonna complain! Though, I always have a hard time flipping the Arceans. They're usually pathetic in any game I play (usually nearly wiped out by the Torians or Drengin), but they cling to one final planet and just won't let go. I usually just terror star them to get rid of them. Mwa ha ha ha. I very much like the earlier game better th

Yes, the minors really do last longer, which helps me tremendously. I get to use them as trading partners in the late game when I'm either at war with the other civs or working on culture bombing them. Kitten, I always keep my military might even if not above the AIs (2nd graph). This will generally keep them off your back. THEN you can focus on culture. If you want to have a strong military without all of the upkeep (maintenance fees), you can focus on anti-matter missiles. They

Does anyone else think that culture flipping has gotten easier? I've had a couple games where I flipped almost everyone without ever building a culture starbase! :SURPRISED: I'm not sure if your cultural influence score is weighted more now or if I just happen to be doing something differently that I'm not aware of. :) I think I usually pick +20 Influence in my startup options, but I've been doing that for a while...

Hmmm maybe in my case I was auto-piloting stuff that went through their sectors. I'll have to pay more attention to that next game. Though I still find it odd that it's *always* the Torians who hate me in my games! :) And for some reason, the Yor always love me. (And it doesn't seem to have had to do with alignments) The rest of the AI can swing either way. It could just be a wacky coincidence in the 4 or 5 1.12 games I've played though.

I've noticed in the 1.12 games that the Torians are just rotten all the time. So far they've always hated me no matter what I've done and I keep having to bribe them with lots of tech to stay off my back. This has been with situations where my military is superior, where it's inferior, or lots of trade between us or not, both the same alignement, or me with the opposite alignment. I can't figure it out. They just like declaring war on me. They almost wiped me out in my last game, an

Wow, the Drengins and the Torians both started colonizing lower PQ planets (13s and 14s) in my sector! I didn't even notice it until I suddenly started getting them by culture flipping, then I was like 'whoah, what happened there?' I've never seen the AI do that before... Anyone else see that?

$20 for an expansion pack seems like a pretty good deal to me. I've seen expansions that are alot more for other games for alot less (Civ3 Play the World anyone?? Especially when mutliplayer was originally supposed to BE in the original release?) Someone else mentioned the Sims. Yes, their expansions are about 20 bucks each, aren't they? And they don't really add much more gameplay--they just have to slap a few new objects/locations into each one (kudos to them for developing a truly object
