Ashbery76, I fully respect that taste in games is not a matter of science, or even logic. I just can't help being snarky sometimes when my own tastes are, well, offended

So to answer your question, yes, I’m “old school”. (Attempts a graceful bow of deference but just looks clumsy) I think we have some remarkably similar sentiments, but I've given up a lot of ground on account of having only one active PC and needing to do painfully Microsoft-centered work <img src="http://images.stardock.com/gc2/T_DL/sm
Birth of The Federation. Oi. The bitterness about wasted money is all coming back to me now...
The second is that I really just don't want to install an otherwise extraneous program on my computer. And I thought I the most old school computer user floating around here Seriously, though, you run Windows, right? That means you have "otherwise
Soon is a four letter word. Spirit_RETRO, you don't work around dev types by any chance? Mumble, I have a vague impression that the DA discs will ship in February with the 1.0 version and the betas will all be download-only. I'm also p
Re the load time thing, I haven't seen any major difference between letting the loading screen have XP focus or switching over to Word or the Web while I wait. I can tell from reading around there, though, that size really does matter, and so does hardware. Anyone know if creaky old video cards help slow a load? Seems like part of the effort might be setting up stuff in your pagefile that the game wants to leave in VRAM.
franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek suck Several years ago, I was so desperate for a space-based 4x fix that I made the *horrible* mistake of buying one of those Star Trek things. It was so awful I can't remember the full name, or much about the game itself other than the unbelievably bad UI choices that were all clearly made for "t
I find it unlikely that anyone would want to skip the tactical battles. IMO, that can't be said until we see the system, and the answer probably will depend on your play style. If you have a bad habit of relying on overwhelming force and the game continues the 4X tradition of getting boggy in the long run, I can easily imagine letting
Does anyone know whether or not the Beta will be available via standalone installer? I'm pretty sure I saw several "SDC-only" statements from Stardock. Makes some sense, given that the beta is limited to pre-order folks.
@Jeff Graw: I don't remember exactly why, but something about MoO2 made me forgive the increased end-game bogging. You're right about the big point though: I haven't seen or heard of a 4X game that has an end-game as lively as the opening expansion rush. But I'm not giving up hope--the Stardockers really seem to read these forums, and are hopefully thinking about really long games even if they can't make the time to play them. Re the MoM branding crap, I highly recommend reading the Gam
Stardock was the beneficiary of a scandal related to the grassroots movement against CD-based copy protection. Lieutenant Homo here, and I can testify, in the old-school sense of the word, that I've bought three different software licenses from Stardock in no small part because they have an unusually community-oriented approach to earning money u
Actually I think we would be far better off today if Ben Franklin had got his wish and only people that didn’t want the job were allowed to be political candidates. Oh, don't get me started...The old DC Legion of Superheros had a lot of painfully silly stuff in it, not least of which was the character Matter Eater Lad. But I'll be darned if he di
Technically, it kills all taxpayers, right? This is a very good question, and the answer might well be yes. Or sort of. If the "population" is defined as only active taxpayers, then some survivors might have headed for the hills. But Wheel also reminds me of something I thought of when I got back to the game after my last round of posts-
If I recall rightly, in another thread Mumblefratz said that econ bases help him spend money, not earn it. I think his revenue is from building a *vast* number of colonies (over 300?) and packing most of them with numerous Stock Markets. And I imagine he always has at least a couple of econ mines, probably more. I don't recall him mentioning a target pop, but that's a wee bit of a moving target anyhow with the ongoing tweaks to the morale and agriculture buildings.
Cards that only comply with DX7 or DX8 standards may not be able to display everything. I learned this the hard way by mistakenly reporting my below-spec hardware as a graphics bug. Re the "matters what you like" thing, *indeed*. Still, the Eye Candy does seem dandy, but I've taken to avoiding lots of screencaps until I can scrounge up a
Actually, it's more that I'm trying to live up to it. Hah, now Mumble's a "social experiment." When I taught, I often asked students whether they thought gaining a title like Justice of the US Supreme Court changed people or whether new office-holders are m
How about a context menu for AI units? It could have things like "File diplomatic grievance" and "Send threatening message."
making them a more of a menace than a navigation problem I like the idea of the pirates growing stronger until they are defeated. If they appeared in a very weak AI's space, maybe the could even conquer territory and become a new AI player, kind of like the schism events but with a process that the players (AI or human) can interrupt.
Right now you can't say everybody building constructors go here without going to each planet You sort of can, depending on what all your planet rally points are set to when you start building a given type of ship. Try experimenting with the Governors tab in the Civilization manager. I've been using a small set of rally points & the Governors tab
It's up there with civilizations. Sid Meir's Civilization spawned a huge array of competitors in addition to its own big-name series. MoM was every bit as fine a game in its day as Civ, IMO. I've yet to see a 4X game that had as nice an RPG component as the different wizards and magic schools in MoM.
I like the idea of improving the ethics events, but the one in the OP doesn't fit story-wise b/c there are no prisoners in GCII. Invading kills *all* residents. I agree that it's very difficult to see what events have effected your culture , and I'm only assuming that you can find them on one of the planet detail windows b/c I've never noticed a c
Humor is always a good thing unless it's at someone else's expense. Seems a swarm of platitudes might be taking wing Ahem, seriously though, some theories of humour claim that all jokes are at *someone's* expense. Mumble, do you buy that notion, an
Thanks Evil S and Telefrog. I still haven't given up on that huge game, but I'm now trying to go for an influence win b/c I can't see a way to get back to Close w/ the Terrans after they made me break them and the Yor have never budged above Friendly. I'm just hoping no one forces me to flex the fleets again...
Shoot, with Shakespeare, typing monkeys, and implied literature scholars involved, the topic's *already* a conspiracy theory
Beg pardon for the cheese request, but doesn anyone know about a walkthrough script for the campaign? I haven't seen one on the few cheat sites I've checked. I've always been interested in the storyline, but I have no interest in working out the "puzzle" bits like the OP's problem. Too busy clicking in my gigantic sandbox games.
