I think Krazikarl has it figured out. Thanks to that insight, I can see how none of the SW movies were intended as stand-alone, self-contained films in the traditional sense. They have been the focal point of a vast social/business structure that has been unbelievably successful; the hooks, if you will. They are just the biggest pieces of the fabric of what has been the SW phenomenon. Viewed that way, Lucas is even more of a genius than we thought.

Took my son to see the original in 1977 at age 3 (nearer 4 as I recall). He's been a total Star Wars junkie ever since, seen every film, watch all the related stuff (Clone Wars, etc.), has tons of SW crap. He saw Force Awakens with his younger brother and, as they described it, they weren't high-fivin each other on the way out. Thought it was a 'good movie' but no raves.

What's been going on at so many college campuses the past several years is a massive indictment of the federal Department of Education. It should be shut down, lock, stock & barrel, & every penny of its budget returned to the states. Our children have received absolutely no benefit form its existence, in fact have been harmed by it. Long past time for it to go.
