I have not had any problem getting colony ships off of stars I did not want to settle, but perhaps I stumbled onto the trick by accident. After moving the ship onto the tile with the star and looking at the star's planets, I clicked open space and the colony ship just moved off of the star's tile. I have to admit that this behavior is not intuitive and can be confusing. Cheers, Jack

I just noticed the other day the real neat 3-D effect you get with the star background in the main window when you scroll across it. It looks very good. In case anyone is interested it looks like it was done similar to what Walt Disney did in the 1940's to get the same realizm when he had a scene that panned or moved left or right. He used two backgrounds, a near one and a far one, that moved at different speeds, the near one faster than the rear one. Cheers, <b
Brad, Is our receiving any of the following messages in the debug file of interest to you? Is there any significance, for instance, of our receiving these instead of some other message? Debug Message: Make Ship Leave Orbit: Brad Version Debug Message: Brad's bug: Need to tighten up the typical colony code. Cheers, Jack
Got another with the build I just downloaded this morning. I don't know if it is the same problem or not, so here it is for your judgement. ---------------- OS Version : Windows ME Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS (IBM) Application Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION Crash Addr: 0042955F 01:0002855F E:\DRENGIN.NET\GALCIV\GALCIV.EXE Processor Registers (x86): EAX:00003F80 EBX:83A823D8 ECX:00003F80 EDX:00000001 ESI:83A82314 EDI
My mind boggles at the many different ways you could use this particular scene in the game. Imagine the first time another race conquers one of your systems. Cheers, Jack
SOL was on the second tile to the right of the very left edge of the galaxy. I am sending the files I think you want: the save file and the save folder. I had renamed them to preserve them so you may have to receive them with the correct name. Cheers, Jack
No, I have always had to turn it off every time I have started the GC, whether starting a new game or reloading an old one. Cheers, Jack
Cari, We are all having to run GalCiv through the DGM until the install of GC starts adding the shortcut to the desktop "start" chain (start-> programs-> DGM -> GC ... or whatever). I have serious doubts about the possibility of it being because of read only files: 1). If the problem was with read only files why would it fail only once. 2). If GalCiv was trying to update a read only file, why would I not get a message from Windows? (Perhaps, seeing as it is
Cari, Have I misunderstood your reply? It sounds odd somehow. Cheers, Jack
There has to be some other explanation for it. The shield shows up when a ship is built or enters orbit. It disappears when the last ship leaves orbit. But with no change in the planet's defensive status the shield will occasionally disappear. I would be willing to run an altered copy of GalCiv.exe that includes a check of all planets' defensive status, reports a mismatch between ships in orbit and defensive status, and terminates. Perhaps by stopping it at just the
In playing further with more ships I have developed a refined impression of what is going on. Observaton: The ships not on autopilot do not have to have made their allotted moves. I have seen a ship on autopilot selected after the colonize+find sequence, then done another find and had a ship not on autopilot selected that still had moves left. Sometimes you just have to play large enough games to get a truer impression of shat the symptoms are. Sorry for any con
Sorry, Cari, My fault. Some of the other posts got mixed up in my response. The colony ship was that of another race. Cheers, Jack
Is the remaining cost of ships useful? I'd say just as useful as the remaining cost of social projects. If you are trying to decide whether to purchase a type of ship it would be useful in deciding which planet should buy it and which planet should continue constructing it (when you have the luxury of choice). Cheers, Jack
Ah, the great and mighty electrons cross each other's path again (look at the time stamps). Thanks for your quick answer, Cari. Cheers, Jack
Tracks drawn to their target for human ships on autopilot, perhaps on command, would greatly enhance playability. Is there any chance of this showing up sometime during beta testing? Cheers, Jack
Isn't SmartException great! I bet you know a lot more about this problem than I would have been able to give you without it. Think "turn causes crash" without it. Cheers, Jack
Right click only? That sounds like telling one ship to follow another. Cheers, Jack
When loading a saved game the background music does not start up. Cheers, Jack
I don't seem to be getting this anymore (if I was ever getting it). This may have been caused by a confusing behavior of ship selection that made me think a ship had lost autopilot when it had not. It has the same appearence as when having a ship on autopilot and colonizing a planet then doing a "find". If all ships not on autopilot have exhausted their moves the find funtion will find a ship on autopilot, which is confusing and misleading. Cheers, Jack
I find that I have to left click and then right click on a ship that is on autopilot to get control if it. Is this what is supposed to happen? Cheers, Jack
After colonizing a planet if there are no more ships with moves left except for those on autopilot the "FIND" function will select a ship that is on autopilot. For many weeks now I thought the ship had dropped out of autopilot some how, but it turns out that if I just leave it alone it continues on autopilot. This causes lots of confusion. I have tried to move the ship manually only to have it follow its programmed course. I have tried to resolve the confusion by re-
I guess the title says it all. I can't tell if the spend rate is even being saved. Cheers, Jack
I just got this exception after pushing the turn button (I used the enter key): ----- OS Version : Windows ME Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS (IBM) Application Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION Crash Addr: 004126CF 01:000116CF E:\DRENGIN.NET\GALCIV\GALCIV.EXE Processor Registers (x86): EAX:00000000 EBX:838F3DB0 ECX:00000000 EDX:00000001 ESI:838F3CD0 EDI:0000000F CS:EIP:0187:004126CF SS:ESP:018F:00A4F7F4 EBP:00A4F84
Looking good. :CONGRAT: Cheers, Jack
Brad, I should have mentioned that the planet I was talking about was a class 15. Once I got the soil enhancement it grew. But if the calculation for growth throws away all but ful unit increases growth from 10 is difficult even on a medium class planet. Cheers, Jack
