IN terms of computer programs, I suppose source code would be copyrighted or patented, and compiled binaries would be considered an actual fuctioning "thing". All that is made complicated by the idiotic bills the corporate Nazis have passed in the last year, saying it is illegal to take things apart. I don't know if anyone knows what-is-what with software anymore, since 99% of the laws have never been fully tested.
Actually, there is a difference between 'public domain' and free use. If there are restrictions, then the copyright holder still possesses the copyright to put those restrictions on use, so they wouldn't be in the Public Domain. I got my first copy of Photoshop used on Ebay from a student that no longer needed it for about what PSP costs now. I wouldn't advise doing that anymore, though. The last three DVDs I have bought have ended up being bad pirate jobs. I would assume the software isn't much different these days.

Moshi: yeah, i can see that. Since you don't have 'pixels' per se, you don't have realistic shadows or gradients, so you would only be able to scale before you rasterized the image. Once you dodge/burn the lighting and shadow on something like an 'Aqua' style button, you are stuck with pixelation when you resize as always. If you were doing something that had a cell-shaded or non-realistic style it would work, and a lot of the most popular stuff is. I can see how it would be helpf

Yup. I guess what I am foggy about is how vector shapes help you with skinning. I've done a lot more skinning than wallpaper making, and I've never had the urge. I'd be interested in knowing how you do it.

A solid understanding of paths, curves and channels gives you all the vector-style capabilities you need to make static images.
