Apple is hardware just as Dell is. Neither company makes the hardware in their boxes, just the boxes themselves. Apple is like a Dell and a Microsoft in one, for better or worse. ...worse.
Doesn't matter what happened in the first year. Sony is going to lose a lot of money on the PS3. If either company thought that their consoles, or any product for that matter, wouldn't add to profits, they wouldn't put it out. It may take one or two years, but the Xbox has brought money into MS, just as the PS3 eventually will.
Apple, Dell, HP, etc. take hardware (processors, memory, mboards) made by other companies and stuff them into their own boxes. Not to mention the iPod, which certainly can't be overlooked seeing as how it makes up such a significant portion Apple's revenue. I think it's a good thing Vista has high hardware requirements. I don't want something brand new to be run on hardware that's 3 or 4 years old. Stinks for people who have computers that can't support it, but I don't think Microsoft should water Vista down to appease them. By the way, it's $17 for full, or $10 for just the toolbar after the trial. I used the trial, but I don't think it's worth buying. Windowblinds is $20, so $10 for a toolbar seems kind of steep by comparison.
