Well, quasi-naval anyway. The US Navy doesn't have a "second lieutenant" or "fleet captain", and has had an on-again off-again relationship with the rank of commodore.

I think the asteroids will "look cool". However, I don't see how it will improve the game, and it's certainly not astronomically correct: there just isn't enough mass to make the kinds of dense fields of rocks you see in movies.
I just saw that I made RADM. The insignia has one fewer stripe and one fewer spot - I hope the rank comes with a real cool hat. :)
Um...that's "whom" not "who".
Another possibility is influence. It takes a handful of turns after a reload before influence is calculated correctly. If influence is a factor in the Arcean's decision, it may well behave as you describe. I don't think anyone is really sure how the AI decides who to surrender to.
Robert, one advantage of the +5% PQ pick is what you are focusing on: what it does to planets you have already decided to colonize. The other one is, IMO, more important, and that's that it lets you colonize planets that you otherwise would not. If there's a 14 between you and a rich virgin star field, it makes sense to colonize it so you can send your colony ships beyond it. It may (or may not) make sense to colonize 14's inside the AI's territory. It can help with cultural conquest of them
To add to what Ray and Geoffrey said, I believe both you and the Arceans need alliance technology. However, if they don't have it, you can always give it to them. That has the added bonus of improving your relations.
Gosh, Ray, but GROSS just offered me a paper pirate hat not to. :) But you do make a good point - there is more to the meta-game than just climbing the charts, just as there is more to the game than just climbing the charts.
I've seen blue stars with 14's around them. If you took the +5% PQ bonus, and build soil enhancement and habitat improvement on them, you get 17's.
I used to be unaligned - I joined the MWC pretty much on a whim; I had enough points to nudge them into 1st, so I did. My objection to joining is the tendency to 'play the metaverse' rather than to play the game. Some of my favorite games have been low scoring ones: playing small galaxies to 7000 points rather than large ones to 15000. If you take a look at my last couple games, you'll see two huge galaxies, one at 8504 points and the other at 14040. The 8504 game was a heckuva lot
Galciv runs in 1024x768 resolution. If your laptop (or any LCD monitor) has a higher intrinsic resolution, you have two choices: (A) Do not run the screen expansion - this will make GalCiv clear but small. (B) Run the screen expansion - this will make GalCiv big and ugly. I prefer A over B, but it's a matter of taste.
Ray, I joined MWC this morning. While I'm not exactly an empire sort of guy, it was just too tempting to bump them to #1. (Before my own metaverse rank falls; I am beginning to appreciate the fun in playing small universes to ~7000 points rather than large ones to ~15000)
Take a look at the rankings this moring. Enjoy it while it lasts!
My second-to-last game I needed Excaliburs. The Drengin had about 55% of the galaxy, I had 45%, and they started their Overlord fleet towards my stars. Two Excaliburs still gave me an official military rating below the Overlord fleet, but an Overlord is really no match for an Excalibur. (Particularly when I destroyed all the Drengin starbases sitting on military resources on the first turn of the war)
I've been thinking about what Solitaire said, and I am wondering if maybe medals shouldn't be permanent, period. After all, they don't say, "Your injury is just about healed. Please give your Purple Heart back."
Thanks a bunch! (Guess I shouldn't have been resubmitting over and over again thinking 'surely THIS one will work'!)
FWIW, I'm in the same boat. Scores aren't being submitted, even though they used to - same machine and everything. let me know if there's something I can do to help you hunt this down.
How good are your relations? I'd consider giving them a whole lot of stuff, and then forming an alliance.
Don't you already have that without a new ship type? You just invade using a different option than the conventional warfare- use tidal disruptors or whatever.
Hosen, why didn't you just pay them?
There are a few things to keep in mind. One is something you've already touched on - it's not just who gets to battleships first. The aliens may have technologies that boosts repair, hit points, etc. and this can make a frigate more than a match for a battleship. Military resources can be critical as well. The other point to remember is that the alien may have a War Party government, and that means a +50% hit point bonus. That can be a huge plus - take a look at the combat simulator, and pi
One nice feature would be a button you would hit that would tell all autopiloted ships that they should go to manual. One might hit this switch when one's war with the Drengins ended and the war with the Torians begins. Otherwise, you have to do it Mr. TheTaco's way, which is rather tedious.
Have anything worth selling to the aliens? Techs, trade good, ships - they all have a price.
Why should wars be long? Consider the 6-Day war. Or the war in Grenada. GC says the war is over when both parties agree its over. That seems reasonable to me.
Thanks again for your help! You're the best!
