Is this the same update as in the other thread? It is the same URL... -Robert

Any program that is threaded (multiple threads of execution that run effectively simultaneously) will benefit from an HT chip, though not as much as they would in a true-multiprocessor system. -Robert
When a planet defects at the end of the a turn, their screen is still getting overrun by the GNN list of planet upgrades so that you have to remember which planet defected and revisit it after you've reviewed everything else. Also, I'm suddenly experiencing something a lot that I'd read about but not personally run into before: ships stopping mysteriously short of their autopilot goal. I've seen this so far with colony ships and constructors and in one case a restarted constructor stopp
So gigantic *is* smaller--I thought I was going nuts! The preponderance of 15s and 16s feels a lot more "natural" somehow--I think you're on the right track there. When you fix the alien colonization overkill I might even tone down my settings from "Habitable planets everywhere"--they really are now. Nothing special about the green or are we supposed to discover that? -Robert
Odd message on the morale update: "But the people are pretty unhappy with 213184440 percent expressing an approval for the policies of ." -Robert
What is with all the green stars? Do they mean something, like the purple? -Robert
To answer Nidaro's question--Brad is saying that the player who is already ahead and has lots of sectors benefits more from their larger "territory" than the player who is still behind and only has a few sectors to tax or restrict. Not only that, but the player who only has a few sectors is also penalized more because their ships have to pass through more alien territory and the player who has a lot of sectors is penalized less because their ships generally mostly pass through their own
Laptop on the nightstand, my friend--you can multitask can't you? And they don't mind it too much. I got my last gf to admit it wasn't the *main* reason she broke up with me. -Robert
Well, I don't know what they are exactly a measure of, but the red grimace and deathshead on planets seem to be warnings that planets are on their way towards defection. A crown (I guess) is a civ's homeworld, though through defection you can have two or more worlds with those. All the capitals have their own icons (except political which I imagine they are still working on)--moneybag for economic capital, the hammer for manufacturing capital, the research thing for the technological ca
"build and research". You get productivity gains for democratizing. Better productivity means you build morale boosters *and* influence projects faster. Influence projects counter alien influence which acts negatively on your morale. I will admit that starting about the time I switched to "Star Federation" in my last game, my morale started to plummet, but I think the main reason is that I was not paying attention to the Drengin Empire's influence levels. -Robert
You've just stated part of your problem: The more democratic forms of government let you build and research morale boosters faster. -Robert
What are the grimacing red smiley and the deaths-head icons? I would have guessed low morale indicators, but I've seen them on planets with fine morale. -Robert
Sorry, I'm an idiot--you certainly can type a name in for a game you are about to save. -Robert
Well, my old one loaded but I didn't try playing, I just started a new one. Sailing along with no problems. Get to get back to work eventually, though. :p A request for B4--I can't seem to be able to give a saved game a name--it's always "New Saved Game". Obviously, it would be nice to be able to type something in. Also, a "quick" saved game that saves over itself and pops you back to the game would also be nice--I've gotten paranoid about crashes and save every couple of moves now. I'l
This was before loading or starting any games. An earlier quit after loading a game was uneventful. -Robert
Crash if you quit from main screen--probably just the same bug from before: Stardock SmartException Logging Information ------------------------------------------- OS Version : Windows XP Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 Application Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION Crash Addr: 004020B1 01:000010B1 C:\PROGRA~1\Drengin.net\galciv\galciv.exe Processor Registers (x86): EAX:00000000 EBX:00000000 ECX:00000000 EDX:00627D48 E
I see some interesting status icons on my planets, seem to do with economy and morale, but their relationship to those is not totally clear--is there a key? Am I flirting with danger loading a previously saved game? -Robert
Whatever it was, after upgrading, galciv wouldn't load. However, after reloading the game manager there was another upgrade! If they are loading it right now I may be getting partials, so I'll wait around a little and see what happens... -Robert
Something's up there now. -Robert
I haven't worked this out as far as a specific formula to use, but what would matter is not how many times you load saved games in general, but how many times you go back to a particular saved game and loaded it again and then only combined with the cumulative effect of multiply loaded specific games, and then only the count of those loadings that applied to the particular game state that you submit to the metaverse. Plus there would be thresholds such as "more than one multiply loaded game", "o
There was a definite mention by Brad of multiple saved games being part of the 1.0 release. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I hadn't heard about an editor, will there be one? Solitair -- We can certainly agree to disagree about the importance of the metaverse as a way for players to be rated against one another, but maybe a simple count of how many times a specific saved game has been reloaded could be used to "weight" point counts. Each saved game could keep a list of previous saved games
And by the way, Ted, by "cookie" you mean small files with only one or two simple pieces of information in them, right--not brownser cookies? I'm just mentioning it because there might be a little confusion about what exactly you are proposing (or its suggested implementation). -Robert
I have to agree with Wyrenn on this--the "cheat" you describe is the point of saving game states in the first place--it's a common practice in many games for a player to stop and save a game at a favorable point and then set off on some dangerous course only to reload that game again when he gets slaughtered. If someone wants to consider planet colonization as that kind of a situation, so what? A player might find a galaxy they like (or find challenging for some interesting reason) and go back t
P3 Xeon 550, which I don't find slow at all with 786 RAM--when I'm *not* playing games. However, my 60+ Mom who can barely use one has a faster machine just because she bought it around a year ago (for less than 1/4 of what I paid!). -Robert
Actually, I think this is a bug: the planet that just launched a ship has "a" focus ring around it instead of the ship just launched having the current ship focus. It used to be the ship that had the current ship focus, if I am not mistaken. And of course, since some other ship actually does have focus, invariably you end up sending the wrong ship to the destination you intended to send the launched ship to. That's one I kept forgetting to make a note of, thanks for bringing it up. -Rob
