Thanks to stardock's silly pseudo update the game is totally unplayable. I can only set up the game and after choosing options for races to play against as soon as I click on the "next" button to start the game it always crashes now. Next time just put a screensaver or a stupid text file on the servers for us to download to test it. I'm not the only one having this problem stardock. Check your new and "improved" beta and bug forum posts.
You know what? You're not helpi

There is no way to adjust the setting in your current game, because that would allow people to start a lower difficulty and then ramp up the difficulty at the end of the game when they're mopping up in order to get a higher metaverse score. In TA, I've added code that will hopefully fix this problem. When I get a chance, I'll implement it in DA as well.
If you select a Jagged Knife planet, then ctrl W them, they will surrender to you and you will have ALL their planets!!!
Except that if he's playing a metaverse game that won't work. Did you check your PreviousAutoSave to see if it was before the JaggedKnife event?

If you need to revert to the previous drivers, you should be able to use the Rollback function. Right click on My Computer and choose Properties, then choose the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button. Find the video driver listed, right click on it and choose properties. Or you can re-download whatever the latest drivers for your video card are from HP's support website and install those. I do suspect that you simply installed the wrong

The version strings in Stardock Central and on the titlescreen of the games don't always match that well, particularly during the pre-release beta versions because the version string can be whatever we want it to be in the game, but Stardock Central's version number has to follow certain rules. So the best way to check to see what version you have is to check the titlescreen of the game.

Umm....not sure. The pathfinding code uses an algorithm to weight all of the possible tiles to move to, and knowing that it would be quicker to go around the influence area of a Super Isolationist would require knowing something about the tiles around the tile that is currently being weighted. If we had to check the tiles around every tile that was in isolationist space within a certain area, that could significantly slow down the pathfinding. We may be able to fudge it by a

neal c, you are talking about Twilight, correct? Can you please send me an e-mail detailing what race you're playing, what ship you're trying to upgrade, and a save game with instructions on how to reproduce this bug? Please make sure to zip the save game or it may block up the mail server. My e-mail is [email protected]

Try turning off Enhanced Ship Rendering and Anti-aliasing from the Video tab on the Options menu, then restart the game. You could also try the drivers here for your video driver: http://www.omegadrivers.net/ Also, check HP's website to see if they have any more recent drivers for your sound. I'm not seeing any errors from Miles in your debug.err, but it tends to be happier with newer drivers.

I'm making a sticky thread to keep you guys updated on when we plan to release another beta. Please do not use this thread to discuss features or report bugs. Update 04.02.08: Since Brad has been on a business trip all week, we're going to wait until next week to do another update. Update 03.26.08: We're planning on doing an update this Thursday, barring technical problems. Update 03.20.08: Beta 6 is up! Update 03.12.08:
Would it really be so hard to take a min to say sorry guys theres no beta today
I have been just swamped these past few weeks and I leave every day feeling like I didn't get enough done, and I can guarantee you that no one here has been celebrating instead of working. We're just very busy. I probably should have made a post on the forums yesterday, but I was very involved in debugging a problem right up until I left and by that time
Are there any good books on the actual game programming? 3d engines, 3d graphics APIs, sound APIs, physics, commonly used formats, tools, etc?
There are a lot of books out there on game programming, but the ones that I learned with were for DirectX 8 and you'll want to learn DirectX 10. There might be some value in learning DirectX 9 as well since it may be a few years before DirectX 10 is standard. C++ is fairly standard, and it would probably be useful to pick up C#.
really don't understand what you meant by there not being a game to play... Is it that time consuming to code in these toggles?
I can't think of a single feature in the game that someone hasn't asked for it to be optional, or have optional alternate behavior. The point that I'm trying to make is that for everyone to be happy, everything would have to be optional. At that point, you don't have a game. You have a bunch of checkboxes. GalCiv2 is a strategy game, and strategy

Cari is my preferred spelling of Carrie, which is short for Carolyn. My mother used to spell my name Carey, and when I was about 13 I was going through a baby names book looking for character names for a story I was writing, and found that Carey is one of the boy's spelling of the name, along with Cary. That's when I decided that I wanted to change the spelling. I spelled it Carrie for awhile, but then decided that I wanted something more original.

I think that the question of "Why can't the AI win an alliance victory?" has been mostly answered, but pieces of the answers are in various replies. By definition, an alliance victory is one in which all the remaining players in the game are allied. In order for this to occur, you have to be eliminated. This results in a Military loss for you. It would technically be an Allied win for the AI players, but since the game is single player, the end game conditions are ge

Kurt, I only offered the option to change your registry as an option to avoid having to re-install Dark Avatar. If you haven't e-mailed your debug.err to [email protected] , you should do it now so that we can take a look at it and see if we can tell why you can't run now. If you don't want to change the values in the registry, un-install Dark Avatar and then follow the rest of the instructions that come after the instructions on how

Minor races are supposed to be almost useless. They are there to be exploited. They are like the little groups of monsters scattered around Warcraft 3 maps that are there to be killed, thus improving your experience level and maybe dropping some goodies. You can invade minors early and get a good planet right off the bat, or you can trade with them and get techs more easily, and extra cash. The truth is, no one will be completely happy with the minor

Prestige is the base influence of the planet. I had disabled custom maps for the beta because I didn't want to debug problems caused with custom maps and it didn't occur to me to re-enable them now that we released the map editor. It'll have to wait for next week to be enabled.

I'd like to apologize once more for the delay. I kept running into snags with getting the map editor ready for the update. I also caught a few more minor things with TA in the process that won't be visible to you as users. This is also the first build of TA built on my new work PC. Yay! If any of you are playing GC2 on Windows 98, ME, or 2000, if you could try out the map editor even if you don't plan to use it and see if it works for you, I'd appreciate it.&nb
So when Cari says it's a 1% reduction, I'm guessing she means 1bc, because even with my massive thalan ships last game, very few would have seen any benefit from a 1% decrease.
Maintenance is calculated as a percent of the cost to build the ship. I changed it from 5% to 4%. So I was referring to the actual coefficient in the equation rather than the actual reduction of the maintenance itself when I said that it was lowered by 1%.
