Simple answer. The new beta scoring system. I got only a couple thousand more than you on 1.05 and that's probably because I finish the tech tree.
oooooohhhh. ok, didn't realise that. is the ramped up score due to playing on maso? I remember Brad saying that was a change. oh well, no more gigantic maso for me until the xpack!
Congratulations on your 19K win.
Thanks... I am still not too good at the scoring side, not sure what factors give you a better score. So can't match Ray's 30K games. Got no idea how those guys do that. I just kill/flip everyone, the games ends, and I see my score. Sometimes it's high, sometimes it's not. I assume it's a combination of money, tech, TGs, Wonders. What about morale and population/number of systems... does that factor in? I know when I play a

I think to make it more realistic the Terror Star should be virtually invincible. But give it one little know weakness that would allow a lone starfighter to make a run along one of it's trenches, fire a single shot down one of its vents (first ensuring that the starfighter's targetting computer is switched off and the pilot is a whiney guy who is only using the Force), thereby destroying the Terror Star. If Brad gets bored with writing software he could probably turn the above scenario into a m

I just finished my first gigantic game and have to admit, I am not sure I would play one again! ohmygawd.... hats off to you regular gigantic players. Too much grind for me though. Tiny/Small/Gigantic are beatable (haven't tried Large/Huge maso yet - will do that next). Like Ray and Co said - Medium/Maso with Common or Abundant definitely seems to be the hardest setting. I have played 3 and lost 3!
Not the hardest ? I haven't a clue how to do it At least with my gigantic game, I was able to hide long enough to build a working economy, even though it was puny compared to the AIs.
I am the opposite to you. I have found the couple of Tiny/Small maso games I played a bit more tolerable than the larger galaxies. I assumed a Gigantic maso would be beyond me, but didn't think about being able toi stay isolated long enough to build up a bit. That's a good point you make,
Bimbo15 , one of the most famous player in our Metaverse!
There was a distinct upward trend in Bimbo15's scores. I wonder why he/she gave up in light of such obvious improvement. There was definitely a '2' just around the corner. Pity.

Thanks Cotal, I'll give it a go. Wondering if non-aussie reading this will be scratching their heads at "going burko". :) Never tried Luck before so will give it a bash. Evil Steve, 1. Yeah! Pity Oceania lost direct qualification for the next WC. Be good if they can get into an Asian playoff group. 2. Not sure if you are asking about good starting options, but my current favourite is Speed!!! Helps with colonisation phase and also with resources. If I see an AI co

Hey the new ship logo is pretty cool! I have a question on Empire scoring. What is the formula to get the total? For instance - we are 13K behind the Euro guys. So what individual scores would we have to tally up to get past them? And how does Cotal churn out all those Huge games? I am officially in awe. I've only managed one Huge game and couldn't keep track of everything! Staying home tonight to watch the Collingwood/Essondon game so may fire up a game in the background and

Thanks guys. I am learning to keep more of an eye on the relationship rating now. I used to pretty much ignore it (or not really understand how to manipulate it) so would often get what I thougt were random declarations of war, when in fact it was me not paying attention. But as you said - bribing and getting them to attack others is a good way to keep them off my back. I will give that more of a go next time. I was also wondering if the Terror Star thing was a bit cheesy. I did it in my la

I want to go down the evil path, but so far everytime I have tried I get attacked by the Torians or Altarians. In most of my games the only evil colony events I have taken have been PQ ones. I have found that as soon as I have taken more than one - they come at me with the "It is our mission to wipe out evil" thing. I don't play very well at the colony and early stages and usually wait far too long to build military as I am concentrating on getting trade goods. So unless I have a Good moral

Ok, got a few questions here so hope you can help out! Apart from the interface changing, Is it possible to determine exactly what your morality rating is? Can I calculate how many more good choices I would have to make to become good or bad choices to become evil etc. I thought you had to pick ALL good choices to be Pure Good. In my last game after I submitted the score it was rated as Pure Good, but I picked at least one (maybe two, can't remember) Evil colonisation events.

I also think the diminishing returns once you've submitted a particular number of games at a certain level is a good idea. New players get some nice scores at easy levels to kickstart their account and encourage them to take part in the galciv community. Then they are encouraged to move up a level. More experienced players can drop back a few levels for fun, but also with the knowledge that they can't churn out lots of high scores. I also agree that the diminishing returns rule s

Hello, I tried EB's "super fast" tactics. Small/Sub-Normal/Common. It sort of worked. I won in about an hour but couldn't get to the end of the tech tree. All the civs flipped. Didn't have any cultural starbases. I had one Influence starbase in my home sector. Did what you said, and it worked well. Sold tech for money, and kept the other civs broke the whole way through. I had one battleaxe (from my Survey Ship) for the whole game and had the highest miltitary rating all the way through
I haven't read the whole forum, but I have seen enough to realise that you, so called ANZACS, are a fickle, unreliable, bunch.
This is completely unfair and inaccurate. I admire and respect you as a friend and Aussie and will always always be there for you no matter what.... Um... ok I changed my mind. What were you saying again?
The few, the proud, the Masochists. What kind of map was it?
Small/Occasional. Don't think I could handle Medium without more practice yet!!
Congrats. Looks like a nice game. I never got the hang of using speed to get out transports and then flee out of danger myself (they always get my ships even after a long run).
I picked Speed as a race pick, and rushed Gravity Accelerators. (Also researched speed tech ASAP so the AI couldn't cut down

I think two reasons that it is a great community (apart from great people hanging out here) is that a) The game was so solid out-of-the-box. So instead of us having to complain about bugs etc. we could get on with enjoying the game. b) Brad and co really took an active role, listening to feedback and releasing iterative patches that improved the game even further. I think that created a very positive feel with people eager to contribute in a constructive way. And it just sort o

Will definitely post more in ASS! Been abit slack there. Been too distracted with galciv and the footy. (Even though the demons are having a pretty shit year!). Yeah, thanks to vincible and Andreas Finn. Couldn't find my original post today to see who else had helped but just remembered I posted that in the Strat section!

thanks Ray. Two of the planets that wouldn't flip had Influence resource bases there in their sector - they were heavily built up but I didn't check. Does the Influence resource help to resist culture at it's location? Or is it map-wide? Never occured to me to buy their starbases, but will remember that next time. By mid-game I had money rolling in so will give it a go. Also have to try and get Eyes of the Universe next time so I can see them before they see me.

Had my first maso win yesterday. Thanks to Ray and co for the tech tips. Had a few failed attempts trying my normal tactics... colony rush, race for trade goods, race for resources - but just couldn't keep up with the AI. This time after my colony rush (only 3 planets in two sectors though), I set my military production to zero and left it there until mid-game. I concentrated on TG techs and building diplomatic translators, gravity accelerators and tritonium steel. They were the o

thanks Ray. This time around I also leased Diplomatic Translators and having better luck. Also doing what you said... swapping 2 or 3 of mine for one Altarian tech, and then taking that to the others. I saw your post in another thread where you were talking about getting stuff like Energy Channeling via trade. Didn't think that was possible on maso but doing what you guys said, I skipped over corvettes straight to frigates/cruisers! Just have to build them now before being invaded.

I have been experimenting with a few Maso games (Small or Medium, with Rare or Occasional so far). Getting creamed which is ok. One thing I can NOT do is trade tech. I have nothing to offer. I am making a beeline for a minor as they are easier to trade with. (I also took a Diplo race pick to help) but can't get anything useful. What should I research that the AI doesn't bother with, so that I will have something. At the moment I am doing my usual Comms/UniTrans/Diplo followed by a comb

I had the same problems as you with economy. I am not an expert player so there will probably be better advice - but I have found two things helped me: 1. Trade Routes. Create as many as you are allowed. I usually make one fairly close by just to get some cash coming in fast, and then create more further away (more valuable). This also helps keepthe AI off your backs a little bit as they see you as a valuable trade partner - unless you are so weak, miltarily that you look like an e
