One thing the Diplomacy Section really needs is Duration of Treaties. I just gave a star system to the Altarians to declare war on the Torians - and 5 turns later they made peace! Within the parameters of the game as it stands that's perfectly ok as they don't promise a specific time - but it makes treaties and tributes basically meaningless. If an AI demands a tribute not to attack me it's tantamount to saying 'I won't attack you THIS month". If I pay an AI to attack another all I know is they

Normally I just abandon older games when an update is available - but this is the first time I am winning on Genius. God knows when that will happen again! Anyone started a game in 1.04.058 and then upgrade to .059? Is it safe or should I finish this game first? Haven't bothered with trade goods in this game apart from Dip and Grav Accelerators so I am assuming I should just leave it until I have finished? thanks.
Thanks for all the useful info. Hmm... I had no idea about spending! I think you should stick fsk's post (with the examples) in the library. From the game itself and the manual it is not very clear how spending works. This REALLY help explain it. thanks.
Thanks guys. Some great advice - especially re: espionage and destabilisation. Never thought of that. Also keep missing out on Tri-Stronium Steel - so I will go for that instead of Aphrodisiacs. (I can't seem to get more than 3 Trade Goods at Genius during this initial phase). In answer to your question as why I am at war... Haven't attacked anyone, the AIs are coming at me. Probably because my attack rating is too low. I buiuld a few Corvettes near the start to keep them off, but for
Just moved up to Genius and am struggling a bit. I am playing Large/Loose/Abundant. I do ok in the colonization phase and can usually get around 20-25% of the galaxy. I always get Aphrodisiacs, Dip. Translators, and Gravity Accelerators. I use the first two to get a tech lead but keep Gravity Accelerators. I build Soil, Manufacturing, Habitat, Banking, and Entertainment Center. I always get to Battleships first. My problem is the when the AI eventually attacks - they come at me wit
How long has that been there?! It's pretty cool and is a massive time/click saver. For those that haven't stumbled across it - if you have the planets list up and for example on the Sol Social Project indicator it brings up a Build Queue - including what is in the gov. queue plus a list of other projects are available. Is there somewhere that has all these little UI tricks listed? thanks.
Thanks for that.
I find if I push my Research slider to towards 100% my income starts dropping. Eg - towards the end of a recent game I was making a profit of around 300BC/month - with my sliders on 33% each. I was going for a Tech victory so pushed my Research slider to 100% and the other 2 to zero. My income dropped to -500BC/month. Can someone explain how this works? I always thought your profit was just divided up amongst Mil/Soc/Res according to the slider ratios. thanks.
Doh! That was probably it. I am the same- in that I get very consistent results and never lose with good morale. I expected to lose as my morale was pretty low - so was suprised when I actually won the next time.
I thought they took a number of factors into account - morale, treasury, strength, relations with AI etc. in deciding the result. Yesterday I loaded a savegame and had an election 2 turns afterward which I lost by a huge margin. A couple of turns later I had a CTD so I reloaded my savegame. Two turns later the elction came up again exepct this time I won by a huge margin. Just to experiment I tried this a few times and got different results everytime. I assume there is a randomised fac
Thanks for that BoogieBac! Great to hear the stuff that is making it into the expansion pack. Especially the hyperlinks on the trade screen. As long as that is there I am happy. The rest of the stuff is just icing - and it's not like any of them are game-breakers or anything. What about the space bar to shut dialog boxes? Not sure if that is used anywhere else? Anyway - thanks again to the devs. Great support!
- Pressing Enter to close a dialogue box or end a turn. - Alphabetical List of ships in the Military Gov. Screen.(Love that you can obsolete ships though!) - More consistent mousewheel support - works in someplaces, not in others. - Keeping the mouse button pressed on an arrow will scroll through a list - at present you have to click repeatedly to scroll. - Pull-down list in the planets screen for the different ordering modes (Social, Income etc) - although I think Cari (or so
I very rarely play 4x games all the way to the end and would usually abandon SMAC/Civ/Moo mid-to-late game. Once you had enough momentum or especially if you had a good tech-lead, it would just be a matter of grinding the AI down. I have found that in quite a few games so far (Intelligent/Tiny-Small-Medium/Occasional/Loose Clusters) that I have established a tech lead and have been on-par or slightly behind/ahead in military strength by the early-mid game. But one of the AIs will come back a
Ok, I have only recently started using trade as a major part of the game so am still not familiar with all the nuances involved. One thing I have noticed - when I have a large portion of my income derived from trade - my monthly income fluctuates wildly. +200 one month, then a couple of turns later -100. (not ude to random events - boom/recession etc). I am assuming this is dependent on what trade ships are leaving/arriving? Not a huge deal as it just means having to keep an eye on my spend
I actually kind of "like it" as it forces you to be a bit more strategic and make some compromises as the game goes on. SO whilst I wouldn't mind some sort of solution I am sort of indifferent to whether one is found or not.
One starbase? Well done. I had four - mainly for trade boosting. Don't think my economy would have survived on one starbase (but don't really know how much of a boost they were giving me). Won on small/occasional/bright (with Arcs on Intelligent) via tech victory. One thing that suprised me is how far my culture was extending across the map towards the end. I was under the impression that starbase/Civ culture would only extend out one sector - but it covered a fair bit of the map. I al
How does this work exactly. In the past - if I have a stacked fleet of transports and invade and am thwarted - all the transports are destroyed. How does the mechanics work. Should I be invading one ship at a time or is there a troop number advantage with a stack? Also if I do invade one ship at a time (and fail) does it make it easier for the next ship - ie "wears the planet down" or something like that? At the moment when I invade, I have no real idea what I am do
I am sort of cheating - in that I am set to occasional/tight/medium/bright - so I am not outnumbered in planets too greatly. Played a couple of games so far. Got severely beaten on one and am winning the second through lots of trade and diplomacy. My self-imposed rules are: no starbases outside my home sector and no searching for anomalies and if any planet defects to me I have to give it away to the weakest Civ. It's good fun so far and "feels" completely different to the usual ga
thanks. I saw your post on the strat group where you talked about having all 10 freighters on one uber-trade route - so I want to give that a go.
One thing I need to brush up on is trade and starbase trade modifiers. Ok, if, for example I create a trade route b/w my planet and an AI planet that is 4 sectors directly north of me. What is the most efficient placement of trade starbases along that route. One in my sector? One in theirs? Starbases along the way? If I can't afford to buld too many starbases and have to select only one or two locations - am I better off placing them closer to the AI end of the route or my en
I laughed when I got that message. I didn't laugh when I refused to hand over the starbase and they proceeded to wipe me off the map! The other cool message I got was when I was in a allied with the Altarians fighting the Yor. I beat the Yor down to one juicy Class 40 planet. Ships surrounding it so the Altarians wouldn't invade before my troops got there. As my troop ship arrived the Yor said - "We surrender human. But just for spite, we will surrender to the Altarians!".<br
I think I saw a thread on here awhile back discussing this but can't find it. Is there a similar tactic to the Civ3 archer/barbarian rushes that people use in galciv? Unless it's a minor civ I have never attacked an AI with anything less than battleships as I am basically a wimp. Just curious what some of you guys do?
I swaer when I first installed SDC - if there was an update available - the History window (or whatever it's called) would show me the size of the update available and clicking on the History link would show what is in the update. Now it only shows me a history of what is already installed, with no way to see what is in the update and how large it is. As soon as I download the update THEN the history file updates to reflect it. I must have changed something but can't tell what!
I was one of the "It wiped my C:\" folks - so to say I was unimpressed would be an understatement! However - I took the plunge again after that - and it's been pain-free since then. Very easy to get incremental updates. I admit it's not the most intuitive thing to setup initally (mainly due to lack of instructions) - but once it's up and running it's very good. Under Tools/Settings/General - I have the first 5 options ticked. And under Connections my server is always set to US - Atlant
First off, I am a pretty crap GalCiv player - but have played 4 games on the above settings and won 2 culturals and 1 military (plus one arse-kicking from the Yor). The lack of planets, the PQ setting plus the AI not colonising PQ14s gives me an edge in the colony phase from which they never seem to recover. One race will usually expand to a few planets - but the rest will be restricted to 1 or 2 planets and are easy pickings. I set spending to 100%, Military to 90%, Social 0%, Researc
