Does the peanut gallery include me? You are right, it is much better to install Windows on a clean hard drive. The best way is to use SDC to archive all your files (Files->Archive) and then burn the backup folder with the zip files in it to a CD, or transfer them to another hard drive, or whatever. Back it up somehow. Then once you have your computer all set up (make sure that you get SP1 on your machine as soon as you've connected to the internet again), download the latest version of SD

Hi there. Sorry this isn't a bug report, but what is the best way to migrate a GC/AP setup to a new computer? I'm ditching my Windows 98 (no comments from the peanut gallery!) and upgrading to XP. I hate upgrading over an existing setup (I believe that doing that is just asking for trouble), so I am just going to wipe the drive and do a fresh install. Any tips? Thanks! Bill ~SDC~
I have also noticed that discovered anomalies are still disappearing when you do a reload.
Check to see if the anomalies return a few turns after the reload. If so, it could be related to the issue where your waypoints don't show up for a few turns after a reload. They're still there - they just don't show up. Also, it would be interesting to save the game a turn before your constructor reaches an anomaly, then reload it and see if the constructor finds the anomaly eve
When selecting RANDOM alignment of a race during the game setup screen, the chosen alignment is shown in the background of the race. IE. You hit 'random', and the background for the Altarians turns red--you automatically know they are going to be evil...same for all the other races. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a random feature. I'd like to be completely surprised when I meet the race in the game.
It's not only the background. Subtle lighting changes and facial
Ah ha...found the problem. All i had to do was move the ships i had protecting the starbase off of the space and i could build it.
What a very odd problem... Especially since you can stack ships on a terror star just like any other ship. Or maybe they made them unstackable so you cannot exploit the move bug associated with terror stars? I haven't kept current with the status of that particular bug, though. Bill ~SDC~
This could be consistent with the fact that when loading a game, AI get an opportunity for diplomatic exchange and rushbuying.
I think this only occurs if you restart/reload a game without exiting GC/AP first. I think if you actually close down GC or AP then reload the game it will not do that. Bill ~SDC~ [Message Edited]
Not sure if this is a bug or not, but when setting up a new game (Gal Civ Alt Prophecy)I dont get the little intro movie anymore ( the one with the colony ship in earth orbit)was this removed or is it a bug....
That could be the result of a change to fix the problem where people were getting that movie immediately if they made a scenario with the Terrans accupying more than one planet at the start. Thanks, I thought that's what the cert meant; however, I did not anticipate that several mods thrown together might make it go anomalous but it makes perfect sense. If you happened to load 100 certified mods that had maybe 5% PQ increase per mod, individually they would be just fine - all together though and it represents a total of 500% PQ increase. Oops. I think I know the answer to this one, but I want to make sure. Thanks! Bill ~SDC~
Not a bug, but a little cheesy: The two new races have dialog from two existing races. Could we give them their own dialog before releasing it? That's the kind of thing that says, "We were a bit lazy," and I know that you guys obviously aren't. What I hope it means is: "We were running around trying to fix bugs, but now that we've squashed the major ones, we have time for cosmetic touchups like this one. Like how you fixed the "string not found" alignment problem. It wasn't a shows
Hi, Cari: It's great to see that you fixed the little annoying problem with the "string not found" alignment error. I guess this means that you've squashed most of the major bugs and now you can concentrate on fixing the littler stuff. I supposed that it was just a problem with the english.str files - which you confirmed - and then fixed. (1.49R) It's a shame, though - I was gonna rename my empire to "String Not Found." ;) (edited to include version) Thank
More info on Auto-Survey problem. It seems like it will only auto-survey to anomolies that are visible when you start the game.
I don't believe that is accurate. I believe that as long as one of your ships has come upon the anomaly, one of your survey-type ships will go there. I have no idea how the computer decides which one to send. it certainly doesn't appear to be a proximity issue. I *think* what could be the problem is that you have to stumble upon an an
Anyone else encountering the AI not taking care of the three Parsec rule consindering SBmuild??I have some srceenies to prove, if you need
I am assuming that: a) one of the starbases is NOT a resource starbase (and furthermore, I believe that only a resource starbase can be built next to a non-resource one and not the other way around), and that b) the two (or more) starbases are in the same sector (the rule does not apply across sector boundries). <
Sorry, what I meant to say was: Cari, could you post a similar English.str pack for AP? Preferably with both the AP and GC English.str files? I think mine got corrupted. Thanks! Bill ~SDC~
I could've sworn that with RC002 the problem with the rally points not being shown when loading a saved game was fixed, but it seems broken again.
Update: It looks like they've returned. Must take a few turns to display, maybe similar to influence calcs upon loading? Bill ~SDC~
Wasn't my post at all. I just failed to see how anyone could act as though the statement required clarification as the behavior occurs every game.
You're right. I can't read, or something. Sorry to ascribe that remark to you. The point I was trying to make with that first remark was that since the poster seemed to be reporting the problem for the first time, the post should have included a detailed description of the problem. My other comment was suppo
Another radical thought? read what i said, its not 'running by default', I havent run it in days and i dont run it at startup This is not the first time ive watched SDMCP doing its stealth thing. at one time, i even had object desktop splash screens appearing on start-up. But hey i run win98 SE, it doesnt matter, no one bothers to check code or anything for my OS, i have had nothing but problems since AP and now PM as well, (ask Cari-Elf, she knows who i am). So this SDMCP thing is just a
Huh? Autosurvey is quite broken. Many are the times that my survey ship will no go anywhere even though I can clearly see anomalies within sensor range of my stuff. However, as far as I know, this is an old bug left over from the GC code, just one more unpolished thing they don't want to spend the time on.The lack of a fix to the 'string not found' for alignments in this latest RC puts the nail in the coffin of my belief in their commitment to the game. It's got to be an almost trivial b
Starbases never have an attack score, and only get StarbaseDefense bonuses to their defense. All attack boni, and the Defense boni that do not specifically state 'StarbaseDefense' apply to all non-starbase ships in the same sector, with an occasional exception for non-combat ships (colony ships often don't, but transports and constructors do).
I believe that colony ships ALWAYS get the bonuses - it's just that their bonus is very small (I believe that the bonuses are mea
I think that the planet sorting doesn't work right. Some of the categories don't sort. You choose a new category but the order is maintained from the last working category. I have verified this by testing a bad category that is sandwiched between two good ones: GoodOne Bad GoodTwo Going from GoodOne to Bad maintains the order from GoodOne, while going from GoodTwo to Bad will maintain the sort order from GoodTwo.
Just finished a game in v002 where the Drengin changed from evil to good long after they were long gone
This would be trivial except that it probably affects your score because the game factors in how many AIs are aligned similarly to you. Bill ~SDC~
Hi, guys, a minor complaint: This is supposed to be a release candidate, right? Could you customize the two new races' dialog? I mean, to have them use dialog from the Drengins and the Torians(?) smacks of "not quite a release candidate" to me. Also, has the "string not found" alignment error been fixed? Could it be that one (or maybe both) english.str files on some people's machines aren't compatible because of some upgrade oddities? Bill ~SDC~
