In the past couple dozen games I've played I haven't built a single constructor or starbase. Just don't need 'em. ;) There have been quite a few strats in the various empire threads. Check the Guardians, Gross and Diplomats for sure as I've seen them in there.

Hey Frogboy, my sub to Drengin.net is up later this year. Is there a way to renew now to lock in the lower price?
I can finish a Huge/Occasional Maso game in under 2 hours easy. No military, 3-4 systems, bribe like crazy. Alliance victory or military victory via alpha strikes. You gotta get a groove that works for you and once you get it down, you'll have your own "formula". Also, I think one or two of the top players has the game on a laptop at work and plays all day while "working". ;) I could almost get away with doing that myself but I choose not too.
Also have to remember that the game is over a year old now and many people have moved on to other games. I personally quit playing for about 9 months before recently coming back because of AP. Also much of the traffic before was because we were all new at the game and asking questions, figuring it out, etc. And Stardock was active with lots of updates and so on. Now there aren't many newbies. Those of us still playing aren't posting about how to play or trying to figure thin
It's fun for me. Mainly because I don't have a whole lot of time to spend many hours on a game right now. But I get fun out of it because by going Alliance victory you have a ton of diplomacy and politics and huge balancing act of keeping everyone happy while not getting into any wars. But if you do, you have the economy to pull out the whipping stick and take 'em down. Just a different kind of way to win. Thus why Alliance is an option. You don't win a Alliance victory by going to war a l
I can do an Alliance/Huge/Maso victory in under 2 hours. No military and no war. Bribe your way to the win.
In the AP beta anyway, you get free starbases equal to the radius of the galaxy. Thus if galaxy is 12 sectors wide you get 6 free starbases. Then the cost depends on your logistics capability. There is at least one galactic acheivment and a wonder (I believe) that increases logistics in the early game. And a couple more later in the game.
Actually, I use the Death Glider and Frigate together. The Death Glider is quite a bit more expensive, both to build and to maintain. If you have a large fleet, you can have 3 Frigates for every 2 Death Gliders. I like to have a few Death Gliders around for defensive escorts and for a little extra punch, but the main part of my fleet are still Frigates because I'd go broke with all Death Gliders. :sniff!:
Wow.....small/medium map....game completed in a few hours....what a concept. ;)
There are many Stardock certified mods. Those should not cause any submission problems. I personally love the Death Glider ship. Very balanced in that it's more powerful then a frigate but more expensive to build and a lot more to maintain. But I find it's a nice ship while you wait for Battleships. Also great is the mini-colony ship and the new freighter pack. You get "Improved" and "Advanced" frieghters which are faster, more expensive of course. There are many o
Thanks guys. I think I will look for a new empire since Apolyton is pretty dead these days. :HOT:
Well, been a long while since I played GalCiv. Last July as a matter of fact. Got burned out on it. Well, after playing about 4 months straight of Civ 3 Conquests I've now come back to GalCiv. To be honest I was sick of it last summer but it's now like a breath of fresh air. I like all the new stuff that's been added in the past few months. Looking great! I'm playing a beginner game to get my feet wet again (already made some errors) but I hope to be back up to Challanging soon
I just downloaded and installed the latest beta last night. I started a new game (not a campain, just a regular game) and the alignments for all the AI's were Pure Good. I thought that to be odd! Also various "string not found"'s in the Stats area when viewing espionage on various AI's. I noticed it for the Yor and the Drengin. I can get the exact fields if needed.
Wait on Two Towers. The super Extended Edition is out in November. Just like with the first one. No sense wasting $$ in Sept and re-buy it again in Nov. :HOT:
3) When you see your "summary of game/scores" screen, click on "DONE". (This is the KEY which I did not figure out soon enough.)
Strange. Since clicking on "Done" is the only thing you can do on that screen to get out of it, I never had a problem going to the next step. ;)
I have a 900 mhz Athlon with 512 megs RAM and I see no slowdowns on any map size up to Huge. Gigantic does slow it down but that understandable. 900 mhz is slow now adays. Anyway, make sure to turn off the option to see the AI moves and battles. That will greatly increase turn speed. You can also turn off the option to see your auto moves. This will also speed things up. At least some things to try.
I hear you Code Monkey. I guess I just really don't care about my score in the Metaverse all that much. I just play the game and have fun and I don't worry myself about the score.
Fair enough CM. I have stated that I personally don't like Alliance victory because it's too easy to do. In my current game I'm only half way through the tech tree, about 35% culture and if I had Alliance victory turned on I could win quite easily right now. But I don't want to win now, I want to savor it. But that's just me. There is certainly nothing wrong with others liking or winning via Alliance victory. To each his own that makes the game fun. And having fun playing the game is all
Well, what you do or do not do is not related to your stance in this thread and others that there's something inherently 'easy' about other victory paths and that they aren't worth as much as the military path. So, no, I didn't look at your submitted games, but I've certainly seen enough of this belligerent attitude from you regarding those of us who think this game's scoring method is weighted much too far in favor of betrayal and bloodshed.
Sorry CM. I really don't kno
Just because you're a galciv bully who doesn't get any sense of satisfaction unless you take the whole map doesn't mean that is how everyone else should have to play.
Don't get your panties in a wad. I guess you haven't looked at my submitted games. Only one was military conquest. In my last game I never fired a shot except to take over a minor that was about to be taken over by the Drengin. I personally don't prefer military victory. I was only pointing out
Military Wins I avoid. If I am playing nice like I usaully do I do not invade Alien systems even if they are weak. The biggest flaw of the game is a Saintly AI invading or extorting a weaker race
Ummm, why is this a flaw? Being "good" doesn't mean you don't extort or start wars. Just look at the real world around you.....or even in history. The Crusades where in the name of "good".
I turn off Alliance victory. No fun in it for me to win that way. For me it's usually a race between Tech victory and Culture. But I'm always ready for a military path if needed. As for techs taking 99 turns? Never for me. I'm raking in those final techs in 10 turns or less easy. By the time I get there my research is plugging away at 200+ % bonus or more and if I'm that close and not moving in for military I cut back all spending as much as possible and pour it all into r
No prob. The key is to watch your money. At 50% taxes and 100% spending you will be losing money each turn. No biggy, might as well spend it and I don't believe in leasing except for emergencies. Once I get around $0 or -$100 or so I'll move spending down until I'm breaking even. Will slowly lower tax rates down as morale starts to tank. If you can get those trade routes going early then you can keep taxes up around 40-43% for a long time. Trade, trade, trade is all I can
Khan, Yes, it will slow you down a lot. You want to get as many planets as possible as fast as possible, period. Nothing else matters in the early game. I wait a *long* time before I build any social improvements. Crank taxes to 50%, spending to 100% until you run out of money (it will be a while). Military around 75% and Research 25% (whatever can get colony ships out in 2 turns on Earth). Just pump out the colonies. All new colonies will also build colony s
Well, Alliance Victory is way too easy to get anyway. If you are decently good you can wipe out the Drengin and Yor via miltary or culture or get the other to do it for you and then you have an alliance with the goody-goodies. I always turn off alliance victory because I don't want to win that way. Tech victory is also relatively easy. Just need a big enough military to hold off the others or make limited strikes. Enough culture to also hold off the others and just sit back to beyon
