I Haven't been able to read all of this thread, but as I see it, the score should break down based on the following, from most important to least important. With each rank being worth significantly more points than the next. 1. Difficulty - the single largest factor in scoring and skill 2. Speed of Victory - How fast can you take down the computer. 3. Type of Victory - Order mentioned by Frogboy seems about right. 4. Wonders/Trade Goods - How good were you at beating th

It is my opinion that Staffa's score should be far and away the highest on the metaverse. In that respect, we completely agree. It had never even occured to me to use a scorched earth method. Cool.
Pontius, I didn't think there was any kind of hiding that most people don't submit their losses. Sergey explained his strategy, which is very different from Staffa's. You made a statement that seemed to imply that his strategy indicated a lack of skill. I disagreed, and felt that the way you presented your opinion was offensive. I made a poor assumption that you were inexperienced with that strategy at that difficulty level, and for that I apologize. In my exper
I guess I'll ruin the consensus by saying that I like the Idea of wonders, trade goods, and economic power having some impact in scoring. It seems like if you build up an economic superpower you should get something for it. I think maybe instead there should be some kind of Bonus for finishing quickly to offset not having all the techs. Maybe if you finish before 2200 you get some extra points.
Staffa, Yeah they could crush me too. It was a poor analogy. My only point was that the games play different. Although in chess they keep track of the blitz rating and standard rating seperately, so this problem doesn't occur. Alexti, That is evil.
Pontius, I don't recall hiding any facts about losing games. I have tried many games on masochistic, and failed, all but once (on 1.035). I've even failed a few on crippling, although not in a while. I've never tried to pass myself off as a great galciv player, and have stated that many others have much less difficulty on crippling than I do. I have not seen any evidence that you are one such person, but if you say you are, then fine. I did take exception to your statement
Actually, number of moves is not really a good indicator of skill in chess. In chess, particularly if you're playing the black pieces, it's very important to set up a strong defense. Some defenses take 20 moves to set up. Some of what are considered to be the best games of chess ever played have gone 60+ moves, while other have gone 15. Often a game reaches a point of advantage where one side or the other is nearly destined to win. If the disadvantaged side does not resign, the games can st
I have some games on crippling with a couple different sizes. Not sure if any of them are high enough to factor into your calculations. I'll be happy to send you what I have if you want (I had a huge game that showed a fairly high score before I submitted). One thing I would offer as input is to request that there be a greater separation between difficulties than currently. It just doesn't seem right that any normal game should score higher than even the worst masochistic game (not t
Staffa, I don't know that many people who enjoy losing, but I understand your point. It may be that we will never see this issue through the same eyes, but rest assured, that I will NEVER confuse fun with skill. My point about having fun was not meant to illustrate that as long as I have fun I should get the same amount of points as you. It was a specific rebuttle to Pontius' post about not worrying about taking over the galaxy until 2200. I thought it out of place sin
With all due respect Pontius, you aren't playing at the higher difficulties. You may find it more challenging to win quickly on crippling following the peaceful approach. With regards to hitting turn a few hundred times, I don't know that everyone else is doing it. As for not worrying about taking over the galaxy till 2200, I'm not really sure why you believe that those of us who don't play the same way you do are doing something wrong. We just enjoy different things. You may like
I play all map sizes, although I'm partial to huge. I would try a higher difficulty, but I'm playing at crippling and I just can't hack it at maso (pulled one off on 1.035, but 1.04 just slays me). For what it's worth, it seems clear that right now you are the hands down best galciv player, and I think that the scoring system should reflect that. I just don't always agree with you on how to go about it.
Ray, I'm on that medal action. Staffa, Sergey, I just said something very similar to what sergey said in another thread (Staffa's Ideal Scoring System Thread). I basically think that the very best crippling should be low to middle maso, and the best painful should be low to middle crippling, and so on. I don't think there should be any way possible to have a normal difficulty score higher that the worst maso win ever done.
Nearly every strategy game I've played has had the quicker is better approach to scoring. I like the part about this game that allows me to win by being a builder/diplomat. I'd hate to see all other methods of winning penalized because it's determined that good players should never get past battleships. I'm also not sure that I agree that economy and wonders shouldn't factor in. I think having a planet with large revenue and huge production ability should be worth more than a plane
I think I vaguely remember some mention of more medals at some point in the past. Well there seems to be plenty of participation now. Maybe people just didn't see it.
I play a lot more like what Sergey played in this last game. I rarely build a transport or combat transport. Sometime wars are forced apon me, but I usually try to achieve supremacy and then get something for peace. I usually take over the galaxy with culture, which is a slow process, but it gives me time to climb the tech tree. Also I usually trail the AI in tech, so have to scramble to be able to counter the overlords when they come. 2219 doesn't seem unusual at all to me. I st
I'll agree with you on that one staffa. I think that difficulty should factor into the points more than they do. I agree that it's a little silly to have top ranked people only playing simple difficulty. I don't think I should have scores that can compete with someone who plays on maso all the time. I also don't think someone that plays on normal should be able to compete with me. I have to hope and trust that the devs will get it right eventually.
You know, this is a lot like college football. Margin of victory used to be a large part of determining who the number 1 team was (like population). A lot of people complained that this made good teams run up the score on bad teams, and that it wasn't really an indication of a better team. So then they put more emphasis on "strength of schedule" and wins. Essentially the skill level of the teams you're facing is the main factor for determining rank, if you win. That was
It's a silly feature request, but how about medals for 10,000 points and 20,000 points and 50,000 points (staffa will get there eventually). The current medals are 5 wins for 1000 and 10 wins for 3000. It seems a bit easy to achieve those. I'm not suggesting they get removed. In my opinion the more little trinkets to obtain the better (Ok it could get out of hand, but a few more would be cool.) After 3000, of which there are some 170+ people (not all of them have 10 games yet but I
Hmm. That might be why I tend to get pretty good scores. By nature I'm a methodical builder type, so I really build up each of my colonies before expanding, which I do relatively slowly. I've pretty much been that type of player in every TBS i've played (Civ 1,2,3, Moo 1,2,3, Alpha Centauri). In most of those other games the scoring system, and indeed the game, tended to reward agressive play more than the builder type. This game seems to give the builder a fairly decent chance of competing
I apologize to those others in the higher ranks, but I think I only finished a game before 2210 once. I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong, but it take me a lot longer than that to take down the AI. 2210 is about the time that it becomes clear that I will win in most games, but it usually takes another decade or so for me to take down the remaining civs. I think I don't start as well as most of the other good players so I have to fight really nasty defensive wars against powerfu
Cheer Frogboy! That's a great thing about this forum. It's easy to be patient with problems when there's always a developer on here saying, "we see the problem too, we'll get to it." Thanks Again.
We're the number 1 empire!
Thanks Frogboy. I think we're all happy to hear that you're listening to our concerns. Just out of curiosity, what was wrong with the first 1.04 scoring algorithm?
I generally stick the military upgrades on to help the defending ship(s). At least battle stations 1-3 and maybe stationary turrut, mini fighters, dread drones if it's a hot spot. For some out of the way stations I'll put a couple defense modules on, just so some battle cruiser can't take it down.
Welcome Shakaar! I just made fleet captain, anyone figure out what the requirements are for that?
