Gotta love those Torians...for lunch. Oh btw on scoring, I noticed that there was no score difference between Cultural and military in a situation where I had all the galaxy but one planet, and either waited for the sector to flip to me culturally, or invaded it and took it over. I also used this cheese tactic while trying to go for beyond human in this game. I kept at war with all civs until they flipped culturally. Finally when the last planet came unto my possesion, I gave it ba

How about: G.R.O.S.S. We don't just kill aliens, we enjoy it. -or- G.R.O.S.S. We don't just kill aliens, we extort, enslave, and eliminate them. Oh yeah, well done Staffa! You the man. (or whatever sex/species you are) [Message Edited] [Message Edited]
The influence graph has already been discussed (dont' know where), but basically the stardockians said that when it gets loaded from a save game, the influence is recalculated over several turns, so it takes a while to show it's true value, because this is a complex calculation. In other words, this is a 'feature', as far as i can tell.
Just to add more fuel. I noticed that moral *increases* when I am at war with a major civ. I am not really sure why. It may have to do with the loss of pop due to invasions. Maybe it has something to do with destabilization? I used to have a problem with moral in early games, now I don't really. Again, not sure why :( One thing I do is have low populations throughout the game b/c I tax people to death, and just keep it there. I.e. 45% - 50%. They are always 'used' to that tax l
Whats the strategy to allying w/ them? It seems you could do a few things with a minor. 1) Swindle their tech from them. 2) As a arms customer (sell them ships) 3) Trade partner b/c all other civs are targeted for destruction or too unreliable 4) Free high-value planet (after a short invasion). I usually do #1 and #2, then when they run broke I invade em. Thoughts?
Uhmm i think the 'no being able to click on enemy ships' bug is also related to the 'can't click on own ships bug', b/c there is a little trade frieghter on the same spot. You have to select something else (like a planet), and then select your ship from the multiple ship box (which has the little freighter and your ship). Something like that. Does this make any sense. I have the feeling i am rambling today. Too much galciv. :)
Hey gang, Just thought i'd share an update of my (normal/brilliant) game. Early on there was a UP resolution which forbid evil empires to have more than 1 trade route. Naturally this killed my 'evil' instincts as far as GalCiv morality is concerned. Interestingly enough, you can be 'evil' in the game w/o having the interface change over. (But I can never figure out where the morality number is for me). Anyway it was a large galaxy, very oddly U shaped arrangement of planets with th
Just a short note. While I am not as good as you all (yet), i do notice that tax rate of 45% is somewhat helpful for fighting off overpopulation. Of course it has it's drawbacks: low score, hard to invade others. Typically I start at 45% and my tax rate goes lower the longer into the game I am, hence the score/invasion problem isn't all that bad. My $0.02
Planet defense definately increases ground defense values. On AI planets which have this it is significantly harder to capture the planet using traditional assault.
Sigh, another victim to Midwest brainwashing :)
I had same problem, just save & reload works for me.
Also upgrading GalCiv 'should' help...My out-of-box game crashed b/c of conflicts w/ SB Live and (i think) my GeForce 4 card. The guy's PC is probably horribly configured too, IMO. Update DirectX and the game should solve the problem. Getting new disks most likely won't.
Desparately needs a *real* tech tree. Steal/borrow from previously published ones by GalCivers (IMO).
Having read this entire thread.... Good points Staffa, CodeMonkey, et al. (means and other in latin :) ) Scoring system probably should be somewhat more level or probably not based on population. Planets shuold definately have caps, and they seem to do as far as I can tell. Regarding the Midwesterner vs GROSS thing...well it's just a game, its not like (as Pontius) mentioned we are all Satan worshipers. I think some people protest to much. You don't see me whining about my
You can just crush one of the civs and render the whole point moot. Like we at GROSS are so fond of doing :) ANyway a stupid question. I tried to go for an alliance victory, there were two of us left, me and the Arceans (sp?). Anyway we had 'warm' or 'friendly' relations but I couldn't get the Alliance option to appear on the trade screen, even though we both had that tech researched. What was I doing wrong? I ended up winning a cultural victory a few turns later anyway.
Hi Pontius, Previously you mentioned that you had problems with the Universalist party. Instead of using the stock configuration you can modify any party, ie the War party, to whatever attributes you want (ie +luck, + PQ, + attack). So with the bonus pack configuration ability it renders the stock party configurations somewhat unimportant. It is possible I am not understanding some intricacy, but I always modify my base party configuration to something more fun. Anyway i guess i am
Uhm to clarify previous post: 'we' are supposed to determine the 'evilness' of the new applicants b/c many times the morality can't be determined by score, b/c for example you are forced to pretend to be good for aforementioned reasons. This is what i referred to.
Pontius you can just change the config to your desire, right? (Using the bonus pack). Case in point about GROSS membership. In game i started last night (actually early this morning) (challenging/large), by the second UP meeting only the 'good' AIs had much any influence, and decided to limit 'evil' civs to 1 trade route! (Forever apparently). Now I will have to keep my morals in line to not go to the dark side until late game, or something. The Torians have it coming, they are fi
I'm back after two week absence. What's new w/ ver 1.035? I can't find info :( And how do I increase my score? I see increasing AI, and larger galaxy. Shorter games help?
Yea GROSS! It's too bad the game considers you 'good' when you backstab all your 'allies' and subjugate the lesser races. Of course these 'allies' are just waiting to backstab you, so really you are just beating them to the punch. Long live evilness!
Well I answered my own question. Actually frogboy did. It's in the Encylopedia -> How Sector Influence Works, which I read but has since been updated w/ ver 1.01 and 1.03 stuff, which I will stick here for reader convenience: So basically my thought was right, that b/c I went to war my influence dropped dramatically. Cool! Changes in GalCiv 1.01: Your civilization's influence is also affected by your diplomatic relations. The idea being, if everyone hates you, that'
Thanks Pontius, I have now joined GROSS. May the aliens quake in their...whatever. I can't recall if I did do a save/reload. Why would that affect anything? Seems like a bug then. I was thinking it had to do with my wars against other civs. Seems to me, rationally speaking, that if you make war against another race, your cultural influence in sectors w/ their planets should drop. Ie, in WWII, the cultural influence of Japanese and Germans were low here in the U.S., whereas the
Okay, one thing I am still very unclear on is influence. I know if you have the most influence in all sectors, you win. I know that certain structures influence influence :) Does population, number of ships, morale, degree of evilness come into play? For example, I was playing on normal intelligence in a medium galaxy. I was just about to wipe out the Alterians. After I wiped them out, I 'spoke' with them and forced them to a peace treaty, taking all their money and influence poi
Shudder. If the Canadians are not stopped they will take over the galaxy. Soon we will all be drinking slurpee trade goods and speaking Canadian, eh? :)
I have to admit I use this tactic myself. I'm cheesey, what can i say :D The other side of the coin makes the empty transport mass-driver thing work more like a bomber. Lets admit here and now, we all really miss the ability to bomb and nuke planets to dust...Well at least I do! Nothing like sending a group of bombers w/ escorts to pound the backside of your hated enemy (Drengins). Rob
