There are all kinds of ways around swearing filters. Substitute an ! for the i, for example, and you can make a very obvious reference to excrement without triggering the filter. You can block something like that too, but ultimately someone who wants to be offensive will find a way around any automated system.

"Vanyel" is a fantasy reference--he'd be a good recruit for the Fellowship.
No, no Precursor events. Resubmission worked. I'm glad. Metaverse isn't that big a deal to me, but seeing that zero there was insulting! [Message Edited]
Weird, the game I just submitted registered as "anomalous." I wonder why. I didn't use any non-library mods. The only things I can think of would be that the poor abused Altarians were so far in debt when the game ended (several thousand BCs) that it thought I must have been cheating. Also I was playing crippling and really abusing tech for cash so I ended up with over 70,000 BC at one point. Any thoughts? [Message Edited]
KitWarrior, I see that PBP has failed to educate you on the historical roots of your empire. Ah well, I suppose history is the vocation of wizards, not pirates. The name G.R.O.S.S. is a Calvin and Hobbes reference. In the comic, it stood for "Get Rid Of Slimy girlS." It was a club that Calvin formed with Hobbes. Calvin's main purpose in creating the club was to make his classmate Susie's life miserable, but he was usually unsuccessful. [Message Edited]
There is no such feature in the game. Tech names and tech descriptions like "Star Creation" are unfortunately misleading.
In my experience, it is not a common internet understanding that public forums will strike profanity. Most corporate forums will choose to do so, but you should not expect that public forums in general will do it. Anyway, would you rather have Frogboy spending his time hunting down swear words on the forum, or working on the expansion? I know which one I'd pick, especially since this community is doing a fine job of regulating itself. [Message Edited]
Just tried it. Either no one is there or I did something wrong.
[quote]Ahhh Dilbert. Second to Calvin and Hobbes on the all time list.[/quote] Calvin and Hobbes has brought me many hours of joy and I think GROSS is doing a valuable service to the world by exposing more people to it. [Message Edited]
Ray, a suggestion for the sequential game. You should have someone playtest the map beforehand to see that the goals are of roughly equal difficulty. If you have "kill the Drengin" versus "kill the Altarians" and you play ten turns and find that the Drengin are stuck in the corner with one star while the Altarians start with half the map, well, that's no fun. I think it might be fun, but I can't play something like this... my schedule is such that I have no time for galciv most days, th
On higher difficulty, the AI handles its economy better (or gets outright bonuses at the highest two levels) so it researches faster. Larger maps longer-lasting games since there's more galaxy to conquer. I've never had a game where I *needed* Excaliburs, though I've had a couple where I built them just for fun.
As for introductions, I'm 23, a graduate student (hence the "ivory tower" references in my little essay, and which also means that most days I have no time for Galciv or for that matter anything recreational) and live in Cambridge, Massachusetts. With the exception of video games, I haven't played an RPG since middle school, when I played a fair amount of Dungeons and Dragons. I was an avid science fiction/fantasy reader until I got to college, when life became too hectic to read much.
How about this for a scenario. Player 1 has the goal of destroying the Altarians. Player 2 has the goal of destroying the Drengin. Whoever destroys his target race first wins.
Try this site. http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/ The ships are listed in the "military projects" heading. As for how far you get up the tech tree, that depends on your play style, map settings, AI difficulty, luck, etc. I play a diplomatic, builder-style game and my games often go past Avatar Technology. You can win on the small maps without ever even getting Battleships though.
"It is done. I shall send a representative to the Halls shortly."
Okay, here's the AAR. I think it illustrates the power of a diplomatic approach to the game. I'm not sure if I should just put it in this thread or whether to post it on the main forum as well. I'm a bit leery of posting this, since Frogboy might take it as a sign that he needs to bump up the difficulty some more, and none of us wants that! When I began this game, I did not intend to play single-sector. However, I got an amazingly good start for a single-sector game, and after playing a
“Greetings, Ray. We have met before at the Galactic Forum, where together we conversed with the Creator of Meta himself. I am Vincible. You were a mighty wizard then, and it heartens me to see that now, you are mightier still. Since we last met, I have wandered far, in search of the secrets of this world’s creation. And the more I learned, the more I felt that the true secrets lay outside this world, perhaps outside of this universe entirely. So I attempted an encha
The sun sets over the plains of Vigrid. The sea of grass extends to the horizon in all directions. The summer's heat has browned the once lush vegetation, and soon vast wildfires will rage through the land. The day's dying light stains the grass red. It is said by some that the Last Battle will be fought here. From all corners of the world, the legend goes, the forces of good and evil will gather. Gods and giants, dwarves and demons, elves and ogres, and countless humans will f
Masochistic is the highest difficulty level, with AI intelligence set to "Incredible." I'm finishing up my single-sector maso challenge and I'll post an AAR of it.
It's interesting to see that such different strategies can work out, even at masochistic. I don't even really build a military until fairly late, and just depend on occasional gifts and trade to maintain relations. I'm working on a single-sector maso game right now, I think I can pull it off.
And the hijacking of this thread is complete :)
I've won on Huge/rare. Or rather, I would have won on Huge if I had the patience to finish the game, but any map above medium gets pretty tedious for me. I had a *really* nice start in that game though. Ray, I think we play really differently. My most successful strategy is basically diplomatic. I just patiently play off the other empires against each other, maintain good relations, build social improvements, trade for tech in order to maintain parity, and wait. When an enemy empire sta
If you play maso, you're going to be playing catch-up until fairly late in the game. I think all of us maso players concede most of the trade goods and wonders to the AI, and are always using clever tech trading to keep up technologically. I suggest that during the late part of the initial expansion phase, research a couple techs that none of the AIs own, and use them to bribe all the AIs to go to war with each other. This will hopefully keep them too busy to be able to back up any exto
I would guess that the problem is that your tax rate is too high. Try setting it to 40% at the beginning of the game and never touching it again. Just adjust expenditures to stay out of deficit. I would bet that this will solve your problem. When you become more advanced you can start playing around with tax rate more, but I think it's best for beginners to just leave the tax rate alone.
I've had no such problems. I don't have to build transports to build population pressure until rather late in the game. How have you set your tax/spend sliders? Are you colonizing only high-quality (ie PQ 14+) worlds?
