I don't use Ecologists anymore, I'm back with the Populists. I think for the single-sector game, the Populists would have been better anyway--the diplomacy bonus is *so* important for a single-sector game. [Message Edited]

Yup, I abuse that constantly. After you've played several games you get to know the AI's research path quite well.

On the scoring system. Star density would be nice to have but unfortunately it's not available on the Metaverse. Same goes for speed to victory, though I would not make it a major factor since if you win faster you submit more games anyway. Personally, I would advocate a small penalty (15% maybe?) for alliance and tech victories. If you win a cultural or military victory, it's clear that you dominate the galaxy and could easily win via either an alliance or tech if you so chose. If you

By writing the strategy guide Gibbie has become a powerful influence resource here. Having GOTM manager Michael Casey and strategy guide writer Gibbie99 would put the Fellowship well on the way to a cultural victory in the Metaverse. Too bad the Metaverse doesn't give the full score for cultural conquests =( Seriously though, anyone who's shown the dedication to the game that you have would be most welcome.

Hey folks, I hate to clutter the board with yet another Metaverse post. Nonetheless, I will do so. =) Frogboy has made it clear he won't change the Metaverse. Why don't we just make a new ladder on someone's web site, using the information available on the Metaverse ladder? Only people who opted in, and maybe who qualified by getting into the Metaverse top 100 or something, would be included--otherwise it would become huge and unmanageable. We have game difficulty, vic

Regarding anomalous scores. If you still have the relevant save game, try resubmitting it. This worked for me the one time I got an anomalous score--for some reason the detector was fine with the game the second time.

The square root of 42 is something like 6.5 so 2200 points for a 13500 game is about right. Staffa's game is weird though--there's no way he should have gotten 10K under this system. Maybe it has something to do with score aging--when he submits, score aging is reversed and he regains points from his old games? I don't know...

haha yeah, I've pretty much given up on being an interesting person these days =) Part of it, too, is the differing selection processes. When you get admitted for undergrad they want someone who is well rounded and interesting as well as smart, because they want to create a diverse community for various reasons. In grad school, they take you because of your skill in your subject.

Sheesh this is the Fellowship of Insomniacs. Now that I'm not an undergrad anymore I have much more sympathy for the professors who end up giving bad lectures. It takes a LOT of work to prepare a good lecture, and there is zero incentive to do it well. A lot of people here speak English dreadfully badly. Some can't follow a simple conversation at normal speed! I guess they all study for the written exams, since that's what gets you admitted, and they neglect actual communicatio

I rather like it here, but I'm a grad student while Gengsta's an undergrad. The experience is really really different. MIT undergrad seems to have this culture of misery about it--the impression I get is that undergrads always have a zillion things to do and are constantly playing catchup with work (though I admit I only know a couple undergrads, and not well). Whereas a grad student's experience is much more focused--you've got one project, and you make it work over a year or five. Just as much

Has anyone ever tried a game versus just one Incredible AI, with the other four disabled? I'm curious as to whether it's easier or harder, presuming of course that you don't cheat by boxing it in the corner. I think it will be harder since you don't get to exploit trading, but you rushers might find it easier. I think I'll give that a try in my next game.

I'm practically next door to Gengsta, in Cambridge. I guess I might give it a try, but I should warn you that my schedule is really unpredictable. Some days I have hours and hours of free time, some days I have practically none. Also I've never played any sort of sequential game, or any multiplayer 4X TBS game ever, so I might not be the best person to evaluate this.

:) That was a really fun game. The Torians grabbed twice as many worlds as any of the other AIs right off the bat, so I was fighting a constant proxy war against them. It ended with me touring the galaxy with a fleet of six culture stars and assimilating everyone--it was the first time I've ever used terror stars in a practical way. I want to start another game right now :) Too bad I have a job to go to :(

von Schmidt: if you have espionage, you can see the current tech being researched *and* the computer's tech spending. You look up the tech cost on Javascout's web site and figure out how much time it would take to research at that rate of spending. This requires you to watch espionage constantly though. For me, the main thing on maso is to abuse trading. You can turn one unique tech into ten fairly easily with clever trading--you just have to let go of the idea that you're researching tech because you want it--instead, you're researching the tech that has the best trade value (this takes a bit of experience). For myself, I try very hard to keep the AIs constantly at war with each other. I also give gifts to improve relations since I can't keep up militarily. This is a very different pl
