Or even (going back farther) Star General, where you had planetary combat units able to be built on appropriate worlds and could transport them in order to conduct your invasions. You then actually fought for the worlds against the units the AI had. These units were able to be upgraded if you had researched the appropriate techs. They also gained combat experience bonuses as well. Being a classic type wargame, these units of course represented air, armor, field artillery, a couple types of in

especially if they're planets you want! The moral here is to attack the most desireable planets early - then if the other planets surrender to someone else, you can probably culture flip them if you don't want another war yet.

I keep seeing threads on this - what are the gameplay characteristics of these 'carriers'? Are the 'carried fighters' the equivalent to an attack stat that gets reduced? If damage to ships reduced their capabilities as opposed to just their hitpoints, (which doesn't happen now) this would be pretty easy to simulate. But as it stands I can see it necessitating a whole new type of damage assessment - obviously not a trivial exercise. Are the 'carried fighters' an attempt to int

Individual tech trees by race - interesting... I would think that IF another race got a foothold in an alien tech path by trading or other means, research along that path should be very difficult/expensive because of the inherent differences of thought patterns. Having said that, if another race did get ahold of an alien tech they should be able to effectively use any improvements associated with that tech. (Some thought would have to be given to whether the bonuses would be the same o

Cloaking quick list of disadvantages (may be others as well - think submarines): Passive sensor usage only Movement restrictions No active defenses (shields, powered armor, point defenses (uses active systems) Weapons can't be powered up (or maybe severely reduced) In other words, a cloaked ship has traded cover (protection) for concealment (hiding). Use of any system that radiates or leaves a trail that can be detected means that someone could detect where you are

Jim1959, The 'stroke of luck' term is out of the dictionary (from one of the 3 usages of the word 'fluke'). A good online english dictionary is www.m-w.com The usage here is maybe better termed: The occurrance of an event with a low probabability of occurrance. Of course, since we aren't the programmers, this is our perception of the situation.

out of the 1.3 planetimprovement.xml file: Stock Market -> Morale 10, economy 25, prestige 5, Cost 120, Maint cost 1 Multimedia Center (needs Xeno Entertainment tech, so I am assuming this is what you mean) -> Morale 10, Cost 100, Maint cost 2 Pretty clear Stock Markets are the way to go between these 2 choices, but don't forget there are 3 more advanced morale buildings with higher morale improvements.

I've had the event on a gigantic galaxy, and yes, wimpy 'Vengence' ships showed up all over the place. But only about 1 or 2 per sector which is about 250 - 500 ships. Fortunately, I didn't have a bunch of unguarded transports, constructors, starbases, colony ships, or freighters around (within their range, anyway) so they were really just a nuisance. And after 'vacuuming' my general vicinity, and getting peace, they just sat there. Since a gigantic galaxy is 18x18 sectors, and each

For instance, where kblore mentions not buying anything and striving for a 300% bonus tile, I am assuming obviously that the bonus is for the planet. (etc) The bonus tile (100%, 300%, etc)is only for the tile itself - a factory (if it's a manufactoring bonus) on a 300% tile acts as if 3 factories were there. If you mismatch the bonus type and im

One result would be a playing area that will feel much smaller - currently tiny is 5x5 (25) and gigantic is 16x16 (256)(doing this from memory, so please bear with me if the numbers are off). So the cube root of 256 about 6, so that a gigantic galaxy in 3D would have the feel of a tiny galaxy in 2D. 9 hostile (or unfriendly)opponents all within spitting range? Yeow!

The last game I got so far behind financially I was down to 34% production to keep afloat. How did the financials compare with the AI's? If your economy (in BCs) was comparable to your opponents', it means that you may be overbuilt some and maybe too spread out so that you don't have concentrated manufacturing ability (research doesn't have to b

At the risk of sounding like a broken record (guess that dates me ), I was one who asked about having both DA and GC2 loaded simutaneously, and Kyro replied mentioning the folder conflicts. Please realign the save folders so that both games can be loaded without swearing at each other (or otherwise interfering <img src="http://images.stardock.com/sd_com/smiles/Smile.gif" border=0 ALIGN="absmiddle

Just looking at the planetary improvement changes, outside of a 15% drop in the beginning, and a decreasing drop as you advance in production ability, it doesn't seem that your ability to SPEND has been changed much. Where you are going to see the difference is in your INCOME numbers, other than tourism and trade. The per tile production of food is now about 3/4 of what it was (you need 4 farms now where you only needed 3 before)[except for your capital, where the reductions for the 1s

Was on another thread when Kyro answered that DA was going to use the same 'My Doc' folders as GC2. Is it possible to have DA use a different set of folders so that both games can reside on the same computer without interfering with each other? This would be particularly helpful during any beta test period so a hard decision on which game to have loaded didn't have to be made. Of course, what would really be nice is to be able to specify custom folders so that it would conform with th

Then I "humbly" make the request that DA use a different set of subfolders - or is this a metaverse or compatability issue? And please put it on the table to make the storage folders user selectable/customizable for GCIII. I miss the ability to keep multiple versions active like I could in GCI. As it stands, I have to decide whether to stay with finished versions OR try out a beta rather than switch back and forth as the muse moves me.

You missed the importance of the 2nd half of the quote - Evasive maneuvers? Program in a series (say 100) different thruster combinations, and have the torpedo computer pick some at random. What a smaller ship can do (agility?), can be countered with computer controlled turrets aboard the heavier ship. Since computer control would be neccesary for relati

Of course, it can take a while for planets to flip; I've seen planets cheerfully ignore ~14x influence. Yes - I had the homeworld of the Iconian Refuge surrounded by 2 maxed out influence starbases for ~ 16x-17x for most of a game on gigantic. They FINALLY flipped when I was taking out the last race.
