I really liked the way ranges worked on OS2, including having it as an option. I liked that I could use it and those that didn't like it didn't have to use it. I also liked that there were techs that would increase a ships range. Cheers, Jack

I too am seeing degeneration of my sound system, but not just with GalCiv. It even appears in the system sounds when I boot my system. I have seen this before and the only way I have gotten rid of it was to rebuild my OS. Now it is back. I have no idea where the problem originates, but it seems to creep in gradually. Cheers, Jack

I have now discovered all five races and the "speak to" screen still crashes when I leave. I guess I am not going to be able to do any negotiations with them until this problem is fixed. And with SmartException being broken on my PC, I can not really provide a good report on the crash. This time the debug.err file has a line (the last line) that looks strange: ------ Debug Message: No test files in current directory. ------ Any idea what could cause this to

Sending the dir command to a file looks like "DIR e:\drengin.net\galciv\*.* >file name.file type" (the "greater than" symbol (">") is the key). You may wish to direct the output to a directory where you can be sure of finding it. To make it easier to edit and clip I generally use a file type of "lst". Cheers, Jack

OOOPPPSSS!!! Make that the Altarians. Anyway, I have a saved game where all you have to do is reload and switch to the diplomacy screen, select the Altarians (the only race there) and press "talk to". The next screen shows for about one second then I am dumped back to the desk top. I am sending the saved game to Cari. Without a functioning SE that is the best I can do. Cheers, Jack

I also experienced a crash from the diplomacy screen, not when exiting it, but when trying to talk to the first race I encountered (the Arcaens). Since my SmartException is not working I am unable to send a report. PLEASE HELP - You really do need SM to work on our systems. Cheers, Jack

Personally I like two kinds of colonization vessels: Intrasystem and intersystem. An intrasystem vessel should be much less expensive to produce, since it would not need the ability to leave the system. Also, I think the point was made somewhere in Brad's many forms of documentaion, communications, and interviews that the code to manage more than one major race in one star system is more than he wants to take on. But beware, in the OS2 version individual planets could rebel, which resul

I checked the tech file "GCTech.TECH" and now find that "UniversalTranslator requires "NanoElectronics". Was this an accident or is there some rationale to such a radical change in the tech tree? Cheers, Jack

Even if this was just for the Beta I think this would be a good idea. At a minimum having it on the first startup screen would be very useful. Cheers, Jack

Knowing details about star systems beyond sensor range (and that includes telescopes) seems wrong to me. In the OS2 version there was a wonder (a special class of social project) called "eyes of the universe" that gave a complete view of all the star systems in the galaxy (why it wasn't called "eyes of the galaxy", I don't know). The realism of having limited knowledge of the galaxy and the futuristic nature of such a wonder provided, to me, a very appealing counterpoint that enhanced my enjoyme

Before I retired from programming (the OS development type) one of the biggest problems was in getting the test stopping kind of problem fixed and integrated into a build fast enough. We were getting to the point where a daily build was the norm. (Couldn't have our testers idle because the code wouldn't work.) Cheers, Jack

After downloading Build 1D and restarting a game saved on 1C the sliders for each race for Destabilize and Expionage spending were at max and the values read a wierd percentage value (orders of magnitude above 100%). I have not started a fresh game yet, so I don't know if restarting a saved game is the only place this can happen. Cheers, Jack

After I downloaded build Beta 1D I restarted the game I had saved on 1C. First the pie chart (bottom left of main screen) went all red. The next turn it switched to the colors for two other races, but my color (dark blue) still was not in there. At the point I was at it should have been over half my color, a sliver of green, and the rest divided up between purple and red. After a few turns it got there. This may, or may not, be an artifact of reloading a game safed from the previous bui

After downloading 1D I find that my treasury suddenly jumps to horrendous negitive values without reason. Reloading the saved game seems to allow it to continue fine for a few turns, then it does it again. I have a saved game I am sending to Cari. Cheers, Jack
