I'm playing the latest beta on Smart AI. Not one crash so far (I've never been able to say that before) and I'm pretty far along - up to Avatar tech. The game flow is great - I started playing around 4 PM and it's 10:30 now, so the game moves pretty quickly. Movement and animations seem ok so far. However, running into some quirkiness. I don't get any popups when my planets finish ship or improvements. In addition, I cannot move my ships on their first turn of movement. I can tell

Does a great job at speeding everything up. I was playing on a huge galaxy and everything seemed fine - except explosions still seemed a bit of of whack. However, at the end of the game, I was missing my graphs of various factors - military, technology, etc. Grifman

1) For galactic resources, you have some obvious "sector bonuses" for military and social production/mining. But you also have a specific bonus depending upon the resource - morale, military, influence, etc. Are those civilization wide? Most everything (mining, defense, cultural, etc.) appear to be sector bonuses, but these don't specify anything. 2) Agenta centers - why have them? They seem to cost far too much and take far too long for what you get out of them. I haven't built

Ok, game is cool, finally figuring out how to win - at least on "average" :) But it appears I can only ask AIs to attack one another - but I want more: 1) I'd like to demand that two AI's stop fighting. I'm playing a peaceful trading empire, but I'm also very powerful militarily. Wars screw up trade. So I'd like to warn them to stop fighting, or I might get involved. 2) I'd like to request that AI break a treaty with another AI. I wanted to bribe the Altarians to attack

Actually, not to get off subject, but I see the Argentines as the "bad guys" in the Falklands War. Argentina was a military dictatorship, attacking the territory of another nation, and the inhabitants of said territory had no desire to be Argentines. And in reality, the war may have been a good thing for Argentina - the ineptness of their generals led to their their political downfall as leaders of the country. Grifman

A few I've noted: 1) When the AI gets in influence/cultural trouble it starts building Agenta centers. Too bad, it takes too long, so they're dead before they get even one built. It needs to do a better job seeing the influence train coming down the road . . . 2) Bad AI move - not totally stupid, because I can see a human doing this to. Yor and I had some good trade going on. We're one (Yor) and two(me), and he declares war on me - plus he's at war with almost everyone el

I've learned the hard way in this game - there is no free ride. Rightly so, the AI will not let you by with an inferior military - unlike many other games - not even a decent sized one to just act as a deterent. You have to stay up there. I don't think quality matters as much as quantity. Basically, early on, I set the graph that shows me military strength. The moment it starts to go up for any AI, I retool and start building warships, whatever I have at the time, mostly starfight

Hmm, funny, I never use hotkeys :) I'm a real mouser - just can't be bothered memorizing those keys. Hadn't gotten far enough along to see how it holds up late game - I'll let you know when I get there. Grifman

Ok, here's my latest, I've had about four today, thank goodness for the great autosave in this game - you don't miss much when it does crash: Stardock SmartException Logging Information ------------------------------------------- OS Version : Windows ME Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 400 (Gateway - English) Application Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION Crash Addr: 00422C3F 01:00021C3F C:\PROGRAM FILES\DRENGIN.NET\GALCIV\GALCIV.EXE Processor Re

Early on I have more or equal population compared with the AIs. And the first tech I research is the one that gives me research labs, so these are the first improvements I build. Plus I always give myself a 40% tech research bonus for my race. But I always fall behind early on. Is there another early tech I am missing that boosts research early on? I can't seem to find it. But there has to be some answer - with my population and bonuses I should easily be ahead but I'm not. <br

I think this is the same crash as above with the new exe. I'm really not doing anything. It's happening during automated ship movement each time. PS, got a strange event - not a crash. But when I loaded a old savegame from before the new exe. the following occurred: 1) The right hand side of the main screen was a palette of thin streaks of color - no objects, just streaks of color 2) The game moved in slow motion and responded to my input slowly. It was sort of funny, panels opened frame by frame, ships dragged across the screen. After a few minutes, it cleared up. Grifman

In two games I've had the United Planets vote on a ceasefire to all conflicts - then on the very next turn have an AI that was at war with me previous to the ceasefire attacked me. So what's the purpose of the ceasefire then - nothing. Either something is wrong here or they need to last x number of turns - as they are now, they are meaningless. Grifman

Notice my first slowdown last night. Playing on the second largest galaxy, every empire has expanded, lots of ships moving around. Very jerky and slow watching everthing. Got an AMD 1400, with 128 RAM, Geoforce MMX card. Grifman
