Great AAR, Brad. Got me revved up to play tonight. It was also interesting to see a seemingly hopeless game turned around like that. I once had a fantastic game of MOO that was very similar, though I don't think I ever got as bad off as you did. I was the humans, got boxed up in a corner early on. Took out some Silicoid worlds, some Alkari worlds, but the Psilons were wiping out everyone else - Mrrshans, Klackons, etc. Then I met them. They would take one system, then I would sue

Well, I wasn't expecting this to end up in GalCiv :) But I disagree with a 3d view, because it really doesn't add anything in my mind. I'd more imagine a 2d combat screen like the one in in RFTS (as much as I was disappointed wiht that game), but with better quality graphics, more animation (fighters launching/attacking), gun turrets tracking, etc. Grifman

I've been thinking about this alot. I like what the original MOO did, didn't really care for MOO2 combat, and I think MOO3 is trying some good stuff with task forces, but is flawed by being RT and on a semi-realistic scale. So here's my idea - tell me what you think (but be gentle :)): 1) You assign ships to task forces - you have slots for so many ships - a set of slots for an outer screen (destroyers/cruisers) and a set of slots for an inner force (battleships, dreadnoughts) and sl

Brad and team, is this going to be the primary forum for GalCiv upon release, or is that being handled by Strategy First? If this is the main one, then I think you need some additional forums to handle the volume and make it easier to find stuff. Example, you could have the following forums: GalCiv General GalCiv Strategy GalCiv Mods GalCiv Tech Support GalCiv AAR Just a thought. Grifman

PS, I also hate that the AI knows where all the good planets are. I understand that is supposed to be due to the backstory of the game (but that still makes no sense to me - travel was limited by stargates, so how did they ever find these planets without stargates at them), but even so, I find it annoying, and an advantage that I don't think the AI is due - I get tired of just getting beat to a nice world I just discovered that the AI NEVER found on it's own, but sent a colony ship to because i

Ok, I posted this before, but since there is discussion of addon, expansions, etc. this is what I want - the ability in setting up a game to control galaxy shape and star distribution (like you could do in BOTF). Personally, I don't like the GalCiv model where stars are clustered and scattered over the galaxy, with large empty sectors. I prefer a more even distribution of stars, which is the way I've seen it in most space 4X games. That's just me - but it's what I want.

I don't think many people thought RFTS was all that great a game. I don't think it did very well, and SSG seemed to abandon the game at the end when the public rejected the game. I know I was very disappointed in it, as it seemed to be a remake of the original to all too great of an extent, and missed alot of improvements made to the 4X genre since the original. For example, the diplomacy was awful - no trading of techs, no spying, etc. And colony and tech development was overly simplistic f

Damn computer problems. Tried to install a new video card, should be simple right? Well, I struggled with it for two weeks, then the computer went on the fritz, ordered a new motherboard, CPU, and the thing miraculously started again. Had to reinstall the OS and everything else. Took me out of commission for almost 4 weeks! Seems you boys have been busy since then - hope to catch up and see what's up with the game. I'm downloading it all over again now as I type. Grifman

From my readings of his work in the past, Chick is a good and fair reviewer. That said, he also trashed Deus Ex, which is one of my favorite games ever, and was also a pretty popular game. So he can be wrong :) But I have to say, the problems he sees are exactly the things I was expecting to see in reviews if the game was "screwed up" as I was suspecting. Yet you have to balance his one review against a number of other pretty positive reviews already out there. And in the end liste

I like AI's that acknowledge their weakness when losing, rather than fighting suicidally to the end. Come and beg to me :) Also, another thought, any way like in Alpha Centauri for an AI to become a protectorate or in submission to me? I always thought that was a very good twist in AC that few if any games had. I liked it when they begged and I could have mercy on them. I'd also like the AI to approach me if another AI is getting too powerful: "Humans, the Drengins will rule

I like the AIs sucking up to you if you are winning. Stuff like this is what makes a game seem like a real and living universe inhabited by living entities, rather than some dumb bots. Keep this stuff coming. Grifman

Agree with the last post. I hope both are very successful, because that will mean more TB strat games in the future. I never played the original GalCiv, but I did play and love the original MOO - it's one of my favorite three games of all time. And while M002 was not a favorite, many, many people swear by that game. I am playing and enjoying the GalCiv beta, but I am also very hopeful that MOO3 will be a major hit - and if the reviews are favorable, I'll buy it also. It's not like t

Yes, as I posted in a separate thread before this one, I have the same problems on my ME system. Can't see cutscenes and the menu opening at the beginning is very choppy. Grifman

Sorry, hadn't posted in awhile, have had problems getting a new video card to work. That said, I've got the latest beta and have some problems that I haven't had before: 1) On the new opening screen, the opening of the "doors" to the new beginning game menu is very, very slow and choppy 2) In game cutscenes don't seem to work. At least the first one for colonizing a new planet. I get some weird "jungle" sounds, but the cutscene is blank Any idea what is going on?<

You don't have specific weapons, so your example isn't relevant. You don't design your ships. You build specific units with certain defense and attack factors. As you point out, it is like Civ. But you are also wrong about "strategy". There is "strategy" which deals with higher level planning, but there are no "tactics" which would deal with individual ship to ship combat. So now you have been talked to :) Grifman

Can you add a feature so that I can tell all ships produced at Planet X to go to Planet Y. That feature would sooo cut down on the micromanagement when I am preparing for war. In fact, to take it a point further, it would be nice to be able to tell them to rally at any sector I indicate, not just planet. Unless this is already in the game and I've just missed it . . .
