I know I've turned down planet surface variety. I'll check the enhanced ship rendering next time i play.

I think the biggest problem now is just the lack of speed in the AI. I personally don't understand how the AI designs such crappy ships. For all the changes in ship engines, the AI isn't really much better off. The solution that needs to happen is the AI needs to use more engines... (and as you said don't bother with weapons on transports) As always, the other dimension of the problem is that developers seem totally focused on small maps. On a small map, a slow ship isn't
I've had 2 games in a row now that the iconians failed to do much. They actually claimed a lot of planets, but most of them have nothing built on them. This could be a valid strategy to a point, but once the colony rush is over, it's just silly. What was funny is at first I thought they had changed espionage. I'd go to plant a spy, and I'd see no where to put him, and no buildings. I thought maybe they'd changed the counter-espionage building's effects. It was only later wh
Does anyone else have it happen where your desktop background gets wiped out afterward? I wonder if that's a clue. Maybe I'll try setting my background to black to see if that saves some memory... As far as sending data in, I know they know about the problem. There have been posts about / around this topic for a long time. It just seems to me that it's getting worse in the newer DA builds. The only thing that's really helped me is to avoid gigantic, and/or have fewer planet
For me the out of memory problem seems to be getting worse. Is this what others are seeing? I haven't had the problem of the turn never completing lately though... What I don't get is how can you keep developing new features when the game is still basically unstable? I've tried Cacheman, and I've dialed down the texture maps. The reality is this game has a major memory leak. Why is this taking so long to address?
I was just thinking wouldn't it be cool to have another game where the focus was a single planet? It could sort of be a planet sim game, except you'd have to fit into the empire as well. For instance you may be told to build a quota of ships ect. On top of that you could have all the aspects of GC2 affect the planet. IE your planet could get invaded, and there'd be a tactical battle. If you lost, you could manage the resistance fighters. Just a thought...
I don't think this is the intended effect of the plague. I've had it happen where it just killed people. (and that seems about right) I think this is a bug. For me to have recovered I would have had to disband most of my ships, and possibly some planetary improvements. I don't think the AIs could possibly handle this. Why would a plague cause you to lose all your bonuses?
I had a similair problem after a plague event. Except I lost ALL my ability points. (So did the AIs) This made the game unplayable because I was losing 2-3k per turn and had to dial taxes and spending down. After decommisioning about 50 ships, I got enough money to run a turn of full research. It would have taken 2 turns to get the cure, however I didn't bother finishing it to see if the bug would be fixed. (Would have had to decommision a lot to run that second turn...) W
I haven't had a lot of time to play the expansion, but when I do find time, I find it somewhat annoying. I think this is in part due to relearning the pace of the game, and figuring out what works. Mostly though, I find the new complexities of the game don't really improve the game. It just seems like now there are more things to balance. The main reason I got DA, was for the improved AI. To be honest, I haven't been able to stomach a game long enough to notice it. Have the same im
Don't know if it's been said, but the biggest factor for winning at over maso is the use of anomoly cheese. Set at abundant, it's very easy for the player to gobble up tons of anomolies early. Do this on a larger galaxy, with fewer opponents and you have a huge advantage. (especially if you build a decent number of fast survey ships) This allows you to keep spending high, and develop tech & planets. Frogboy, if you want to cut down on people saying how easy it is to win, f
Um. To be honest i'm kind of tired of the game. I'm hoping that DA will be a solid expansion that will rekindle the game for me. I also haven't had a lot of time lately. Further fueling this, has been the state of the forums. I used to check up daily, and see interesting posts. Anymore, it's just all the same. I've had a game going for a few weeks, and I just have no interest in finishing it. Playing meta games has probably made this worse, since the gigantic games just
The AI should probably give up on using military starbases. I say this mostly because it doesn't protect any of it's starbases with ships/fleets. What is the point of a starbase to boost your ships if you allow your enemy to blow it up immediately ? As for the economy ones I think the AI does ok. It probably doesn't focus enough on building them up vs spamming them, but I don't see this as a big deal. The bigger problem is when you see the AI basically forget about one of i
I've noticed sometimes you need to un-check and then re-check the show betas button. That may fix the problem.
I don't know, i think bigger and more expensive engines are the way to combat a blitz. This will not only make the ships slower, but take longer for these transports to build. When you're talking about a blitz, you're talking about what might be a 10-30 turn advantage on the AI to rush. If you don't hit that window, you're essentially screwed. It's also gonna make you thin
Even better... prohibit 'ANY' combat for a ship traveling beyond a certain distance. Or limit the number of attacks to the number of engines. That wouldn't be as drastic, and it wouldn't hurt the AI at all since at most it'll attack 2x in a turn.
Are we really going to start calling AI inefficiencies 'bugs' now? If they are decommissioning starbases, how is that not a bug ? Out of all the things to decommission, a resource makes absolutely no sense. The only valid reason would be to avoid war, but even that is questionable. I wouldn't even allow the AI to do it. It makes
Who really even knows how much money an empire is pulling in, spending, and how much money they're printing ? It would be much more likely that a true empire would lie about it's finances to everyone. Very few would really know what was going on. There would be curruption, but it wouldn't magically show up when the treasury got too high. Curruption should be in the game, but it should be a slightly progressive tax based on income. The more money coming in, the more people
Yor transports at the start of the game are quite fast. The Yor have awesome minaturization, that could also explain it.
Even if starbase maintenance is zero, that dousnt mean the AI is programed to take this into account. The AI might be programmed to dispand units to save money but is unable to destinguish between ships and starbases? Even if this was the case... Call it what it is. A bug.
Good, I've been wondering how it works now. But no matter how it's working, it seems like Visibledark's fleet should be winning fairly decisively. I think I know one weird thing that's going on. A laser has a power of one, so it always does exactly one damage to an enemy with no defenses. But a plasma has two power, so it rolls either a one or a two. Its average damage is
Ya I agree. Next game I play I'm going to surround a few resource bases so that I know that they can't be attacked. (unless there is an attack bug that would let someone attack through. Which may happen since I've seen AI ships attack me from 8 or 9 squares away, but I've always thought it was a display issue) I hope a few of you do the same, and when you see it save off your autosave & send it in. (if it's repeatable.)
I geuss we'll never know since the devs probably don't believe there is anything wrong. "oh they must be mistaken, a minor civ must have blown it up". The next time I see this, I'm going to try a go back to see if it's repeatable from the autosave. Maybe if we can send them an instance of this, then we'll get an answer.
I thought there was a change if you had multiple weapon types, but you don't have that in your test case. I tend to agree with you that you should be winning. There was a problem with defending against mass drivers, perhaps now their is a problem with shields ?
Pentium 4 running at 2.4GHz, 1GB RAM, & GeForce 6600 with 256 MB Ram. (mine doesn't crash either, but gets slow) Maybe we'll get an answer from the Frog if we keep bumping this...
May be by decommissioning, they save money on all their other ships ? (guessing it's proportional to stats, but not sure) I'm really thinking it's a bug since they're are not a lot of folks adding to this thread. Wheel & Fuels, how well does GC2 run on your PCs ? I know at gigantic/obscene my computer is crawling at mid/late game. Maybe there's a memory problem causing this ?
