I have destroyed all of their ships, taken all of their planets -- and yet they don't go away from the diplomacy screen. Also, the peace treaty option changes to Nano-Metals tech when I select it -- wierd. When do the survey ships come in the tech tree? Enquiring minds want to know Cheers, Frank

After rebooting my machine, the install of alpha 5 went smoothly. NEVER MIND Sorry, Frank
Oh, and my new GCTech.TECH file is still dated April 29. Frank
I did a disk cleanup and deleted all of the "temporary internet files" -- and it gave me the same error. Then I deleted the entire windows\temp\drengin subdirectory, did a disk cleanup, and got the same error. Any ideas? Frank
I go to a conference, and when I come back Alpha 5 has been released. So I try to install it, and I get the above error. I tried erasing the entire temp\drengin\GC1 subdirectory and re-downloading and it didn't work. When I look in the gc1\base\data directory, the GCTech.TECH file is from April 29 -- although all other files are from today -- May 5th. So I delete the GCTech.TECH file, and re-run drengin. No downloads, but it immediately gives me the same error, and the GCTech.TECH f
" In the end we are making this game for the Hardcore strategy players. " Yes. When I first met GalCiv 2.0, I had only played CivII -- and I read a ton of stuff for Civ II before everything made sense. But, having that template in my mind, everything was intuitively obvious in GalCiv 2.0. I think that if I had started with GalCiv 2.0 rather than Civ II, I might have been lost because the *Stardock Tradition of Terrible Manuals* was in full swing at about that time. For new
They probably do -- except that it will come as part of the Drengin.net subscription rather than as a $25 add on pack. Frank
I was thinking about over-the-air television say 25" screen that costs $250 plus about 300 Watts comes to almost but not quite free. Personally, I'm paying ~$40/month for DirecTV with a $650 DirecTiVo (including the cost of lifetime membership and hard drive upgrade to 149 hour recording capacity) on a $380 flat-screen 27" television -- Plus the cost of electricity -- still quite a bargain -- just a bit more than all those hours on a $3000 486 PC with OS/2 and GalCiv Gold. Fran
" How about plain old simple quote marks (")? " Great Idea! Frank
Several times when I exit the game, I've gotten a SmartException report. I don't notice anything wrong other than the report. Here is one example: Stardock SmartException Logging Information 04/23/02 15:41:47 ------------------------------------------------------- Versions: Microsoft Windows 98 Internet Explorer 6.0.2600.0000 Video Card : ATI Rage Pro AGP 2X Crash Information: Application Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION Crash Addr: 00
Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Oh the joys of having dependent children.
BTW -- I tried to use some html to make the quote look like a quote -- and failed. How would I do that (bold or italic some text)? Frank
It has a really good UI that just makes sense, any gamer will be able to get into the game in the first half hour. Any gamer that has played any other 4X game. I FPS only gamer would be lost, either with or without the Stardock manual. Frank
While computer games are a good value -- they aren't quite as good a value when you consider all of the additional hardware one purchases for games. I'm thinking about getting an entirely new system because my current PC while completely capable of handling my non-entertainment computing needs, is sluggish when running games. Of course, even when you factor that in -- computer games are quite a value -- almost as good a value as watching television (: Frank
While some have mentioned making planets more far apart -- I think it would be more important to make the sensor range of ships, planets, and drones larger so that you have a few turns of impending doom when you see a battleship and transport comming at you.
How about piracy? I'm not really all that keen on the "pirates" as a separate race, although it makes sense that when moral gets too low a system might rebel. However, I think that whenever a ship with more offense and movement meets a ship with a zero offense, one should be able to board that ship and re-flag it (or at least take it into tow and use it to speed up the production of one of your own ships or something). Lone transports, survey ships, and freighters should be easy prey for pira
Are there going to be any range restrictions in GalCiv windows? I thought that range restrictions were an important part of GalCiv OS/2. Cheers, Frank
As a general rule, when a defender attacks another defender which is orbiting a planet, it should fail -- that is with an attack value of 1 and a defense value of 2 most of the time the attacker will (should) die. That is the opposite of what I have been experiencing when I play. Most of the time and fresh defender will be able to kill another fresh defender. Is this correct? A feature, bug, or my imagination running wild with me? Cheers, Frank
I agree completely. But, I think that the pretty graphics needed to be built from the ground up, and that the list display can be tweaked between now and general release (or at least I hope so). Cheers, Frank
Well it would certainly change the nature of the game to be able to change a gas giant into a livable planet for the price of soil enrichment. You might want to use instead of a function, an if-then approach to how much the planet upgrades. Thanks!
Okay my $1/50. First make the AI system open so that people can create their own modifications to the AI -- and the best AIs can be put on the downloads page. Second, you will need an AI that will work on low end machines. Third you should have an AI that will beat the average player without cheating 5/6 times. Now I think that having the open system is the best route -- Suppose that you let your fans program the actual AIs. Then you let people upload their AIs. When people play "o
I would say that an easy way to add star names is to take a listing of Earth City names, and either add "New", "Neo", or "Astro". Not much time to have names like Astroindianapolis and Neomoscow. Yumm, ;) Other ways would be to have alpha and beta testers each contribute 25 names (which would have to be checked by somebody at Stardock) -- possibly on a page of the metaverse screen. Thanks!
No, no pause. That may be because I'm running a relatively underpowered system (K6-2 @ 0.6GHz w/128Mb). Or maybe I should say that there are *lots* of pauses so that the pause is imperceptible to me. So I've usually got 5-8 colony ships going somewhere and a survey ship or two also going somewhere, but I like to pilot my scouts manually rather than using the autopilot (a slightly eratic course can reveal a much larger section of the galaxy than a straight line course). So I move my s
Well, I've received the saved game and played it four times on my machine. Twice I had a hard freeze (CAD does not bring up task manager) but no interesting color effects -- just the cursor stopped moving around on the screen. Twice I was dumped to desktop and got an exception report -- I include them both below: First exception report, second game Stardock SmartException Logging Information 04/09/02 10:17:37 ------------------------------------------------------- V
One problem is that the lifetime of a single individual is never long enough to lead a civilization the way that GalCiv imagines. One possible solution would be "hot sleep." As described in The Worthing Saga by Orson Scott Card ISBN: 0812533313, hot sleep allowed important people to sleep most of the time (in suspended animation) and wake up for (maybe) one day a year to make important decisions. This science fiction device would allow one person to dictate many of choices that the ci
