The current population model is very simplistic and quite unrealistic. The population of Earth starts at 100 (million? billion?) and in the space of one year grows to 374 -- this is clearly impossible. I like the idea of months rather than years -- it allows for a single leader (me) to lead my civilization through an entire game. However, over the course of a year I would expect that the population could grow at no more than 25% rather than 274% Even a 25% growth

Okay, this message is about the fact that percentages are a confusing metric. Let's assume that the base production is 100bc. Now if I add a social project that adds 20% to my production I'll have an effective production of 120bc. If I add another social project that adds 50% to my production is my new effective production 170bc (100+20+50) or 180bc ((100*1.2)*1.5)?? Similarly, it seems that Taxes are not a fixed percent of my economy -- that is I can tax at 100% and still my

I know that the Govenors aren't going to be put into the game for a month or two, but I thought I'd think out loud a bit about how they were implemented in OS/2 and how they might be improved. I found the social govenor very helpful, but I often wished I could have two or three different govenors so that I could adjust the timing of different improvements depending on the resources of the planet and how close the planet was to enemy systems -- so a planet that was in the center of my ci

I scored a little above 250K. I didn't research any of the "evil" techs - but they didn't go away after I researched the "good" techs. Boy -- there are a *lot* of techs. I think we need some sort of queue system for social improvements. It was quite tedious (with only about 15 planets) to add improvements one at a time. In the middle of the game, I was spending 100%, taxing 100% and making tons of money. Later on, my spending ability caught up with my taxing ability. However, it s

What we really need is ... a spreadsheet. Hooks into Excel wouldn't be that good because the game is at full screen instead of in a window. If the game was in a window, then having an Excel window would be good. So, thinking back to the OS/2 days ... The spreadsheet needs to be sortable by multiple criteria. Ideally every column in the spreadsheet could be sorted on, and you could have three sorting keys (Planet class first, and then for all class 22 planets, by population

Here is my smart exception report. I clicked on Battleship 2 tech, and it booted me to the desktop. I got a smartexception popup, and I chose submit to Stardock, but I don't think it got sent. If it *did* get sent, if you let me know I'll not re-post to the forum. BTW my internal clock is wrong -- so the exception occured about 10 minutes before this posting. Thanks! Okay, both of these problems occur with colony ships, but I think they are two separate problems. Please forgive me for posting them together. First, when I have colony ships autopiloted to a star system and on the same month as the colony ship arrives at the system another ship is finished building or a social improvement is completed, the colony ship docks at the planet first, then the improvement completion screen comes up, and dealing with that undocks the ship. I think that the s

Okay. What worked for me was to logoff, and then sign back in again. When I come to www.galciv.com, the site recognizes me as Fuji Fun 4 Free, but doesn't let me post. But, now that I've logged off, and then logged back in, it is taking my posts (assuming that this one is accepted). Is this a bug? Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature but... when I enter the name of my civilization (Fuji Fun 4 Free) a single press of the space bar inserts two spaces into the name field (also for the name of the leader (Frank Fujita)). I can go back and delete one of the spaces (that's how I know that it is double spacing rather than that the font just has a very wide single space). Thanks!

Should this file be put in the glaciv directory? Do I need to use any parameters when starting galciv to get it to use smartexception? Since the only people using galciv at this point are testers, shouldn't this be a part of the distribution set? Are you getting sick and tired of my questions? Thanks! :)

I *did* see the OS/2 version's text. But I wasn't part of the OS/2 version's beta (or alhpa) program. So I thought I'd chime in, and see if someone is willing to fix these things if/when they are pointed out. In addition, even if Stardock isn't willing to fix typos in the game, they should on the website because it might affect sales if people think (incorrectly) that you code as poorly as you document.

It's pretty obvious that we alpha testers should provide bug reports. Are you sure that you want bug reports posted here? There are lots of automation things that might not get put in before the beta is released -- should we bring up those things -- ways to save clicks, and allow one to focus on runing a galaxy. Then there are lots of things that have to do with diplomacy, espionage, etc. Should we talk about that (even though the Alpha is mostly military in nature)? How about things that h

Quote: "Should genocidal tactics be allowed? That is, should we be able to build Terror Stars? Not by default but with a vote, Terror Stars (huge ships that can stop the fusion reaction of stars) can be built." Question: What happens when you control a system (planet)? Do you import troops and administrators to rule the other beings who now work for your galactic civilization? Or are the previous occupants of the planet eliminated? That would be "genocide." Quote: "Sectors are controlled by different players. But within the sector can be star systems that are controlled by different players. Should, after a time, star systems controlled by civilizations who don’t control the sector have to hand over the planets to the player who does control the system?" I think this last "system" needs to be "sector." Thanks.

Quote: "Their mass so immense that moving them, even with the inertia of the vacuum to make doing so easier, was quite an undertaking." Question: Is there a new physics in GalCiv that provides inertia to vacuum? If this is just a hint of how things have changed since the creation of the Star Gate, great! If it's a typographical error, I thought I'd point it out. Thanks.

Sorry, I posted when I shouldn't have: At a more advanced level, a particularly good battle outcome could create a personality -- (like an event that occurs when a ship defeats another ship or combination of ships that it shouldn't have.) The personality could be assigned to different ships, or even to star bases to give the bonus to the other ship. This could also trigger a particular story that would have some biographical data about the person, and that person's feat of bravery tha
