Spore Technology Bug No, no, spores are vegetable matter, not insects! Seriously, though, I think it is a bit much that some super abilities can be stolen or traded like any other tech (Korath, Iconian, Korx) while others are non-transferrable.<

This doesn't really sound like the problem I have had, but it might be worth mentioning, anyway. My laptop has a wide screen with 1280x800 resolution. Normally, though, I use a desktop monitor that uses 1280x1024. The first time I switched from that monitor back to the widescreen, none of the main screen or Options screen buttons worked correctly. The "hot spot" for each button was offset downward by about an inch, making it impossible to use some of the buttons, sliders, and other doodads.
Very interesting - especially that 20PQ class planet full of industrial centers. When I saw that first map, I thought "Holy cow - the four races actually started in the four corners! If that had been my game, I would have started against one side, squished in by all three of the others." Then I read far enough to realize it was a custom map. Oh, well. I'd go after the Arceans next - those smug bastards. Does the first strike super ability apply both when attacking and defending
Moosetek, it seems that even a bunch of elite Internet savvy folks take awhile before they realize they're being put on. 'Internet?' o u men teh INTARWEBZ!!11L0L! Okay, ya got me, Moose. Sometimes it's hard to tell with guys of your advanced age, you
Nonsense, woven into the absurd? No, AFAIK, it's more like something that may once have been hip but is now insipid and trite. It is supposed to have been some kind of "hacker code" where some letters in words are replaced with numbers that resemble them. In the above example, the number 1 replaces "L", 3 replaces "E", and 7 replaces "T", making
I haven't seen the AI go for either an influence or diplomatic victory, but it will most certainly take a tech victory if it can. I had a game early on, in v1.1, where the Iconians' sickly gray influence cloud had enveloped three quarters of a Huge galaxy before I teched out ftw. Maybe that was an accident, but they were doing darn well and had c
Hm, I think I see the thrust of your argument, G.W. Mumblefratz, you are correct on all counts. I've finished two gigantic galaxy conquest games to get the full experience; educational, but so time-consuming that I doubt I will do it again anytime soon. Now to the original post: I had no interest in tiny or small galaxy games at first. That changed this past summer when there was a big kerfuffle about people's Metaverse scores dropping dramatically once they reached 16 games. I had just
Sometimes your forum name and avatar just seem to happen on their own. I've always been a Sean Connery fan and also a SciFi B-movie junkie. I had just seen Outland again (I give it a B+, but it's still a B movie) before I got my copy of Galactic Civ, so the movie poster pic and the character's name seemed like a natural. I'm kind of over it now, actually, and trying to figure out if I should change the name or the icon first, then wait a while and change the other to let people get used to it.
Just popped in to say that I've taken the last week or so off from beta testing to rack up a couple more scores for the glory of the empire. I noticed a post earlier about some old empire or another trying, like Justinian, to restore their faded glory; may they have as much success! Also finished off my personal goal of playing a medium galaxy with each of the races. Large galaxies with a ramp-u
I rarely finish a game once the challenge is gone That is my number one reason for playing in the Metaverse; knowing that my score will be added to my Metaverse record gives me the incentive to finish mopping up what's left of the AI factions. With a goal in sight, it doesn't seem so tedious. And, over time, seeing which strategies produce the hi
I am just south of you in Richmond and Wal-Mart still has a few copies. Everyone else still has it. One more proof that I live in a giant center of Suck. It happens with other titles, too. When Mad Minute Games came out (finally) with their title Civil War: Battle of Bull Run, I called all of the EB Games stores in the area. Even the nearby store
I have all three of those chains in abundance here in the Northern Virginia/DC Metro area, but I have yet to see a single copy of Galactic Civ in any of them. If you don't spot it in your stores right away, you will be much better off ordering it online from Stardock. You can download it and play it that day, and then you'll still get the CD fairly quickly.
It's not as obvious as I thought it would be; that picture is a still from "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" with Kona's face pasted on. He's always reminded me of the Grinch. I was trying to make little Cindy Lou Who, beside him, look like an Altarian waif with the blue face paint. I think he leaves a lump of depleted uranium if you've been bad, too.
Merry frakkin' Christmas!
you really cannot rush buy colony ships in this latest version Yes and no. You won't get any abandoned yachts worth 2500 BCs in DA, for instance. You can still buy the first several if you're willing to wait a turn or two in between purchases, though. Here is the basic strat I have been using: Set taxes to the point where your starting p
I'm going to stick to the bare bones of the way you describe your preferred playing style, and try to keep this short. If you like to build up considerably before you get involved in any conflicts, there are two key factors (there are others, but these are the main ones) to keeping AI factions off of your back. The first is your Diplomacy rating; having a high Diplomacy will make your relations with the AI factions more favorable. Take some of your starting racial ability points in Dipl
We must be of a similar age. Great choice of song. The best thing about quoting that song here is that it was sung by Jefferson Starship ! I wasn't around when it was recorded, but I have a cool aunt who made sure I started off with the classics. Our ages aren't that similar
When I click on the Anonymous user H's profile I was taken to my own profile. Maybe it's part of the new "scary" AI that Brad is developing. It starts out as an app on the forum servers, steals your personality, then uses it against you later when it insinuates itself into your game! <TABLE cellpadding=8 width="95%" align=center bgColor
Was Luck always a factor in combat? The Altarians have never really done all that well in my games.
My new home PC isn't fully set up yet Dang, Mumble, haven't you had that thing for a couple of weeks now? Only kidding, I do understand. I've heard some good things about Advanced System Optimizer's registry fixing features; they offer a free trial <a href="http://www.winxpfix.com
I'll do that when I get home tonight, Kryo, thanks. I don't remember whether I had that option on or off, but I had saved the game and found this problem after I reloaded; it should still save designs when you save your game, shouldn't it? Another detail I didn't think to include last night was that I had just experienced the problem of the disappearing fusion power plant when building the power plant over another improvement. I had saved the game and reloaded to see if that would have
kaos, what race were you playing as? This happened to me recently playing as the Custom Race; I've never had that problem playing as any other race. Though, as you suggest, it may be a result of the length of your game or of the length of your playing session.
I just loaded a savegame (DA beta 2A) to discover that all of the ship designs I had created during my last session had not been saved. All of my starports were still building ships that no longer had designs in the shipyard. This is the first time I have seen this happen. ?? Naturally, loading a new game destroyed my err.log from the previous session. I was playing as the Terrans, medium galaxy, if that is any help.
I have heard there is a point(maybe 20 years) where the score will start to drop more dramatically There is supposed to be such a point. I read a post months ago saying the drop-off point was somewhere under ten game years, but I never found any corroborating evidence or statements from the devs. I kind of like the fact that they don't c
Seth, were the Drath in that game? Did you get lots of messages from races declaring war on each other at the behest of an "unnamed power?" If that is the case, I suspect the Draths' Super Manipulator ability is causing races to declare war when they have almost no military. Then, after a few turns, those races realize they don't have the power to win the war and chicken out. IF that is the case, it seems like some balancing of that ability is needed. If not, then something mus
