Just posted my first game for the Evil Empire. 76K Played as the Thalians for a military victory. Congratulations! I pity the puppies that inhabit those worlds... I'm still moving laboriously through my second game for the Empire. <img src="http://amcore.kryo

he is now pondering other ways to make it harder to win on Suicidal without penalizing players on lower levels That's one of the best things I've seen on this thread yet. I am definitely in favor of anything that helps to create a sliding difficulty scale where players have to work harder in multiple areas as they increase their difficulty level, yet doesn't punish new players for the successes of grizzled veterans. It seems to me that one of th

Sneak attacks are not critical to it, but the build up is absolutely critical. I've been slowly ramping up to Suicidal play for some time now, and I absolutely agree. I am consistently able to defeat AIs: NOT by surrounding their planets before attacking, and NOT by whizzing around at high movement rates. It's not even so much where you build up your forces before hand as is is how you build them up. When I assess a neighb

I could move the ships back to their home planets, But if a planet has built more than ten ships...? How about moving ships into orbit around the nearest friendly planet most powerful ships first, then cascading to the next planet when that orbit fills, etc., until non-enemy space is the closest destination? That would certainly help the AI protect those planets it likes to grab deep within your influence area. With something like this in place

Like Iztok said - build nothing but factories on your homeworld at the start of the game. Queue them all up, factory bonus tiles first, and buy one factory each turn until your planet is maxed out. Research up to ion engines if you don't start with engine techs, then go for the planetary improvement and the first two military techs. You'll be popping out a colony every 2-3 turns, depending on how you set your sliders. <img src="http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/5742/animation2wo2.gif"/

Is it related to the story creating stuff that turned out to be too hard to create? I don't know if you mean that as a criticism, but I think I would classify that feature as damn near impossible to create. I used to develop educational software, and one of the things I worked on was a feedback routine that kept track of everything a student did in the GUI and presented it as a readable list of actions. I don't like to think about the evenings, nights, w

Avoiding the -- relations categories is a good start. Every time you conquer a civilization or even a minor neutral, it will make it harder for you to ally with the remaining empires. If your influence area covers some of a faction's planets (the --Close Borders penalty), you will have a hard time with them, etc. The best way to bring the other empires to Close relations is to build up a massive military rating - to the point where your military is at the top of the graph and all the ot

I almost called in a hazmat team to clear the dust off of this thread Just wanted to let you guys know I did a quick write-up of my round 3 game in the strategies thread in our Core forum. Hopefully it will be helpful to all of you - and please post your own any time! <img src="ht

It's amazing what you can accomplish taking a personal day off during the week. Yesterday I brewed an all-grain batch of beer and still had time to play the first four years of this game. Tonight was just mopping up. I don't know how good a score this is since I haven't played for a diplomatic victory in ages, and it seemed like it took a year too long, but I guess we'll see how the other diplo scores shake out in the end. <img src="http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3803/mvlround3io6.j

No, I was simply being silly - I just wanted to do so after adding something meaningful to the second page of discussion. Sometimes repetition of the original subject matter is beneficial, and I hadn't spoken up yet.

A repeat of a correct interpretation of the bonus scoring for this round's multiple victory type scenario: Fastest Conquest gets 1 point. Ties also get 1 point. Highest scoring Conquest gets 1 point. Ties also get 1 point. Fastest Influence gets 1 point. Ties also get 1 point. Highest scoring Influence gets 1 point. Ties also get 1 point. repeat for Alliance and Tech. I vote in favor of this bonus point structure. <

"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is, 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia.' But only slightly less well known is this: 'Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.' Hahahahahaha!" -Vizzini, right before he dies of iocaine poisoning. <img src="http://amco

Yes, I disagree. TGE did check in although which of our many threads it was I'm not sure. He even had a game posted to the MVL that a few folks commented (including Neilo) they would be willing to allow. Since TGE's non-submittal made no real difference to the final outcome there was no reason to do so. Actually I re-checked and TGE's post is reply #181 in the MV League Round 2 thread. I really have missed quite a few things, it seems - thank yo

Vilgan, please check the Bladerunners' Core forum, I gave you a better assignment than I think you expected Neilo, I'm really not sure we have five players anymore - TGE hasn't checked in anywhere in ages, and never made a post or even a PM about Round 2. Unless we hear otherwise from him soon, I would like to consider him 'on sabbatical' - welcome back at any time, but out of consideration for

I tend to avoid the naval vessel naming conventions altogether. Playing evil empires, I use whatever nasty-sounding combinations come to mind. Bloodletter, Bonestalker, Starflayer, Dreamrender, Soulbreaker - something nice to let my enemies know that I care. After the base name I usually add attack, defense, and sometimes movement to keep them straight as I do minor upgrades. Usually I stick with one weapon type and one armor type per ship type, but if I do something unusual I might ad

Shiny cylinder Blazing through the atmosphere; Death rides a new horse. Spore ships are SO worth it, it just takes a little more management to keep your economy going during your first couple of wars. I've played several games as the Korath - here's my basic spore strat. If I'm crammed into a corner and must take out a neighbor early, I race to ion engines, missile or mass driver theory, and spore tech. Before I build any serious warships, I build spore ships w

1. Only if it is your last planet - you can keep going as long as you have one planet left. 2. I usually go for the higher PQ planets first - but once you start to see a trickle of enemy colony ships headed your way, just grab anything you can, because there's usually a tidal wave right behind that first group. 3. No, the targeting sequence is calculated automatically during the battle. Why one ship is target first, I am not completely sure; I have a very holistic playing style

PlayJeff, tsk tsk! Time and distance. Your wife will probably never forget a single thing that upsets her over the course of her life, but over time she will eventually lose most of the bitterness. Distance, as in getting away from the scene of your blunder, will also help. Take a long weekend away somewhere very soon. Make sure it's somewhere she will think is cool, even if you are afraid it will involve some kind of shopping excursion. Sometimes just letting her spen

Most of you are probably aware of the planetary improvements graphics mod I have been working on at TBSModder.com. Having completed a first pass at all of the major building lines and a few extras, I have zipped them up for others to try out. It is a graphics-only mod that will not interfere with your ability to play in the Metaverse. If you're interested, go to my post about it in the TBSModder forum or just go <a href="h

IMO, the ability to laugh at yourself a little (like GC2 does) demonstrates more maturity than taking oneself dead seriously. Part of it, I suppose, is your individual feel for the game. I don't consider GalCiv2 to be highly "immersive" like some games can be, so an occasional funny bit of dialog doesn't really break the atmosphere for me. If you ever get the event where one of the evil races chooses "good" alignment, watch out for the dialog. Having Kona pop up in your trade s
