I suspect that the soonest this patch will be out is this Thursday. But that is if all goes well from now until then... They might push it to next week which qualifies as soon. But I wouldn't suspect that it would not be more than 2.5 weeks from now.
Well this week they've been updating the depots online. So definitely a sign that 'something' is up 'soon'. Take that for what

I kinda thought setting up an expectation of a dev stream every week wasn't a great idea. It takes a lot of time and coordination to do each stream and that's time maybe better spent elsewhere. Maybe every other week is ok? I'm not saying stop it all together, but just more resource allocation wise, and also having to provide new ocntent every week may setup bad expectations. Every other week or even like once a month (like Prison Architect does) for a web stream is ok. We

I played the alpha at PAX East. It looks pretty good even in alpha. Combat is tactical but it's interesting in that you combat on the actual strategic map itself. Though I couldn't figure out the game determines 'which' starting tiles you basically begin combat on. It was still kinda simplistic in its implemenation. not sure if they'll advance that more. I felt it addressed one of the issues with Endless Space in that that world feels more 'alive and vibrant&#3

I imagine I will still greatly enjoy it, but I don't think I will set my hopes for this to be a true new SMAC.
Yeah not sure how uber excited I should be... though it's hard not to just HOPE it's SMAC2..... I dont really like the visual representation of manufacturing/research/wealth. It's almost impossible to, at a glance, convert the visual representation to the numeric one. You also would have a problem where something like 49 would look really long visually (4x10, 5x1, 1x4), but 51 would be shorter (1x50, 1x1). This gives a really odd visual where 'less is more' in terms of length. I do like the representation of other items in that bottom bar though very clean and makes sense.</
I really don't like the wide vs. tall dichotomy. In Civ it was introduced to temper the dominant strategy at the time, which was to get 5 or 6 cities as soon as possible. Then in Civ V I think they went way too far in making it difficult to play wide.
I don't see how this was a problem in Civ5. They got rid of Corruption, by far the largest 'rubber banding' mechanism in Civ4 to penalize wide empires. The on

The problem is that it's hard to have a game that has both wide and tall empire building that doesn't fundamentally favor one or the other. 4X games are, as Sid says, filling buckets. And you fill those buckets faster by having more stuff. And you get more stuff by having more cities/planets/etc. Civ5 had the Culture mechanic that gave you massive penalties for more than a handful of cities. This meant the culture victory was only possibel by making tall empires, not wide ones

I'll have to see how the rendering wroks in-game. Right now I'm probably one of the last few people on the planet that hates wide screen monitors so I' keep buying 4:3 monitors on ebay. I wonder if all the games movies will look 'squished' when they're rendered in game. Have to wait n see I guess. The only benefit of using Bink movies is that if you make your own custom race, then it 'might' be easier for you to create these kinds of idle animations by

Right now as far as I can tell all the animations of races are basically just Bink movie files. There currently 3 states (happy/neutral/mad) with a transisition animation. The same applies to the 'small' animated faces you see for each race on the race selection screen, its just a Bink movie file referenced in the XML If you wanted to create a race specific announcer for each one, you'd have to render and create a movie for each one. That's not impossible, its just mor
