One more thing, does Stardock build in a switch that disables the need to have Steam running to launch GalCiv 3, in the unlikely event that Steam ceases to exist?
Now we have to make a LOT of assumptions 1) Steam goes bankrupt or something 2) For some unknown reason, neither EA/Gamestop/Activision/etcc decide to swoop in and buy Steam even if its JUST to get a 60 million account user base.
Well from what I can guess about Steam Workshop and how it integrates subscribed mods with the game launcher, there are still going to be mods that will not be compatible with each other. If I come up with a whole new tech tree mod for GC3 (and being honest, when I get a look at the tech tree I'm likely to say 'aw, hell no') and someone else comes up with a tech tree mod, then it's possible to subscribe to both
Functionally you have to understand that for a dev, steamworks is more or less a no-brainer in terms of cost benefit. Cost is ZERO. Benefit is you get 1) Patch automation 2) Match making (remember how all those gamespy games got scrweed when gamespy decided to charge 100x more than before?) 3) workshop 4) VAC 5) Market, where if anyone anywhere buys/sells a card for your game YOU MAKE MONEY FOR DOING LITERALLY NOTHING 6) real-tim
Ah, valid point. Perhaps we could petition Valve for manual control of updates? Or "Downdating"? If this is as bad as you have made it out to be, you should take it up with Valve, since Steam is otherwise an excellent platform to have your games on.
Given what exists now with SteamPipe, the 'beta' tracks are likely the best way to allow previous versions to be available to users who opt-in to
From what I've gathered thus far, I should look into: -Look into if Steam needs to be always on in order to play GalCiv 3 (its a big deal for me too). -Look into if modding works well. -Look into if updates are handled well.
1) likely yes but this depends on how they code the API calls. But it's about 99% a sure thing given how FE LE works. You'll have to convince Frogboy to remove that restrict
Note that devs have the right to moderate their own games. Some do. Others don't. Stardock doesn't and assumes most people go here. Other devs aren't on thei r respective discussion hubs for whatever reason. That's a developer community support problem. Not a Steam one.
https://forums.galciv2.com/138274/page/1/ Sort of an old post, but this might be what they're looking at for GalCiv3, especially given the very high system requirements.

If you don't update your game, why would you bother attempting to play multiplayer?
Again 'generally' this isn't a problem But as I indicated, in Civ5 this was a GIGANTIC problem. Because they changed extremely core fundamental game concepts between patches. Specifically the happiness resource, which is extremely vital to the welfare of you empire, was at one point
You can turn off auto-updates for a game in Steam.
Technically though, all that the "disable auto-updating" does is disable the Steam client from doing updates when the client is idle. Steam ALWAYS checks the latest version of the game when you launch it and updates if necessary. So you can't really stay on the 'old' version for very long since Steam will eventually force you onto the latest version when it
In terms of concerns people will have with Steam that are fairly legitimate * Patch control. Steam auto-updates your game. This is 'usually' a good thing since your FPS concrete grey knee high wall simulator needs all players to be on the same version. Steam was designed to solve this problem. And that's fine right up until the Civ5 devs decide that happiness is a local and not global resource so my carefully crafted empire goes into rebellion overnight. WTF!!!!111!! Or yo
I think the most burning question for me is whether the modding support is any good on Steam. I do play a modded game on Steam (Skyrim) but I'm not sure what sort of challenge it is going to be to write a mod for GC3 Workshop. One of the things that might actually win people over (to the dark side, some might say) is having a huge mod library for GC3. Anyone have any insights?
For probably 90% of
I agree pre-knowledge should be limited where possible, also that computational complexity needs to be carefully managed, and some degree of cheating will be needed on the highest difficulties. In some cases AI implementation by using expert systems based on watching human players can deliver interesting AI gameplay while remaining algorithmically manageable. It's obviously limited in scope but
I'd assume most of the lore for Galciv3 would need to be re-written anyway
I'm more interested in seeing some of the newer UI stuff. To me the 'strategy map' part is a bit ancillary from a purely gameplay perspective. I need to interact with my empire, other empires, ships, planets etc. HOW I do that, can more or less make or break the game, even if the core concepts are solid. I mean I love SMAX, but lord the UI sometimes makes me want to burn the floppies.
The reality is that without some advantages like that the AI would be extremely handicapped against a human opponent. We're really really far away from having an AI be able to not 'cheat' in some way in order to provide a human a challenge. I mean think about it this way. Right now chess from an AI perspective is mostly a 'beaten' game. Even incompetent Chess AI's can kill your run of the mill player. And we're certainly at the point where the best ones are
I'm a tad concerned actually about the 'naming' rights the moer I think about it. One would 'hope' that people would not spend $100 to purposely troll the naming system, but Greenlight showed that even $100 is not a barrier to some people with certain mental deficiencies. Also being an American company (I'm referring this as a purely cultural reference, not to the stereotype that American are 'stupid') it will be hard to filter out foriegn names

In terms of OS support everyone will be fine. Long as you're running the 64 bit version of Vista or above. Unless you're some kinds of rediculous 64 bit XP hold out, in which case, I hope that padded room you're in is really comfortable. XP support runs out in 6 months, so you'd better start upgrading. Given that COD:Ghosts requires 64-bit, and BF4 will have both 32/64 bit versions, you can more or less bet that other devs will follow with 64-bit requirements. Given th
