Jack, I agree. Don't much care which way it goes, but it should be consistent.

I don't mind if the name changes. What I miss is the concept. Up through Avatars, ships get more and more expensive. When the Excalibur comes along, you get a very fast ship for 3/4 the price of an Avatar. That meant that one strategy was to try and hold off a serious war until you had Excaliburs but your opponent didn't. You could then outbuild him 4:3, and have a substantially more dangerous vessel to boot. An Overlord is too expensive and too slow to be used in this wa
Probably the easiest way to do this is to burn yourself a CD ROM that has a bootable OS/2 and a copy of the original GC on it. Then put it in the drive and power up. I suspect Technician's right - if it were easy to port, we'd have had it years ago.
Brad, sometimes this does NOT happen. (Maybe a game stored mid-turn? I dunno).
If you try and build a WarHawk, the construction list calls it a Frigate. Something is confusled.
I miss the Battlestars, but I miss the Excaliburs more. Overlords are slower and more expensive.
Because the game should be fun for everyone, Master Lame, even those just starting out. Not everyone is the gaming wizard you are. Does that mean that the game shouldn't serve their needs too?
I can confirm - it happens when restoring from a saved game.
The other problem with Ultradrive is "what if the Drengins get it"? Then it changes from "Random Event: You win" to "Random Event: You Lose". 3x completely changes the game balance. +50% would probably be towards the top; it would still change the game balance, but it would still be possible to lose with ultradrive (or win if an alien has it) Did anyone check - is it a Trade Good as well?
I think there is a pretty big gap between dumb and average. Whether that means average is too hard or dumb is too easy, I'll leave for the experts.
I suggested to Brad that after a system defects, nearby systems should be (at least for a few years) more resistant to defections. People (and aliens) move from planet to planet, and you'd expect those who weren't pleased with the defection to move away. That said, I strongly disagree with the point of view of some that the only kind of victory that "counts" is military conquest. One of the strengths of GC is that there are ways to win *other than* military conquest. As for point #2
I was in the same situation. I got UltraDrive, and within a half dozen turns the Drengin Empire's economy collapsed, they got caught in a flood of Coca-Cola, and I got a cultural victory.
Ted, I just got Ultradrive. It seemed to impact only me - Aliens were just as slow as always. Is that what you saw as well?
Survey ships are a bad one to test with, because they can always pop through a wormhole.
The Arceans sent me a message - "String Not Found". They were apparently declaring war, because the music changed, and a check on the foreign policy screen showed that we were at war. This is the second time we have been at war, if that helps. (Now, on to teach them a lesson!)
A few more comments on spelling. "wrested control", not "rested control" (governments sleeping on the job?) "interfere" not "interfear". "computers" not "comuters".
Technican- Who were the bad guys in the Falkland Islands War? I don't see that two "good" empires will necessarily have no territorial disputes.
My games have AI's with bases that are not on top of resources. (And it wasn't much fun cleaning them out before my big invasions, let me tell you!)
US invading Canada? It almost happened - remember "Fifty-four forty or fight" from your history books?
Raise taxes, cut spending. A time honored technique.
How do your economics look? One of the factors that drives how hard you can research is the overall strength of your economy.
Class 15 or 15 planet? If so, you might check the "Beta 4 Crash To Desktop" thread and see if it's the same bug or a different one.
Early in the game, I don't know how I plan to win, so the most useful feature is mobility. Fast ships help me outcolonize or outfight the aliens. Also, Impulse Drive lets me build transports, which I can use as early-game cheap Defenders. Then I go for Defenders and place them on my planets. By then I have an idea of how the game is shaping up, so I can start making plans on how I might win this thing.
Ted, I saw the same thing. I was in mid-war with the Torians, and discovered my ships couldn't attack them. However, for me, a turn later I was back in business. I also lost my hit point bonuses, but starting with the next turn, the shops started repairing again.
Grifman, did you just lose an election? There was a bug where losing an election would cause one's influence to zoom through the roof. Maybe it's still there.
