WHile I agree with Jack, who is going to protect the "patent rights" of an extinct species?

I won a game through what GC reported as an Alliance Victory, but in fact it was because the last planet of the Yor (the last surviving major race) defected to me. So far, so good. So, I declined to submit to the metaverse, and clicked on "Continue Game". I was back in the game, just like I should be. The next turn, I won again. And the turn after that. It's as if the code checks the victory condition after the "Continue game", and doesn't see if it's the same one as triggered it l
Thanks, Jack.
That's a good plan, Brad. Another alternative is to allow it to happen any time during the game, but have the Dread Lords ships be limited to the highest technology in the galaxy (perhaps a little greater). So if the rest of the galaxy has Battle Axes, the Dread Lords might have Battle Cruisers, but not Rangers. Conversely, if the rest of the universe has Avatars, the Dread Lords might have them too. That keeps them from being either too powerful or too weak.
Magus, the same thing happened to me, even earlier in the game. I didn't even have Battle Axes to toss at them. Worse, I just went through a round of Pirates, who had ships far superior to any of the species. (It was like having the Barbary Pirates armed with Ticongeroga Cruisers and Nimitz Carriers). It was so early in the game and so overwhelming, it might as well have been "Random Event: You Lose".
I did a total reinstall too (with multimedia). It didn' change anything.
If this is the executable 2367539 bytes in size, it still does a CTD when clicking on "Details" for a Class 16 planet. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Good to hear. (It's always the simple ones that cause the most grief!)
I tend to play large or huge, Brad, but this crash was at medium too.
Steevodeevo, that was a bum steer, I'm afraid. I just uninstalled, and reinstalled (w/o multimedia; that's coming next) and the exact same thing happened.
My debug.err doesn't complain of anything. I hesitate to do a total reinstall without something more to go on, but I'll give it a shot.
Clicking on "details" for any of my Class 16 planets causes a CTD. I have a 20 and a 26 as well, and both of those seem fine. Because I'm a W2K guy, Smart Exception isn't in the cards I'm afraid. (Although CDR Lucky Jack once volunteered to try and reproduce these and send in a report)
Next Turn performance is really slow on a 700 MHz P3 with 128MB. On a 1.4Ghz Athlon with 512MB, it's acceptable. Judging from the disk noises, at 128MB, there's plenty of thrashing going on.
Jack, yes, you do get some more battle worthiness per unit cost, but... Lets start with identical build costs. That's 4 cruisers vs. 3 frigates. As you point out, that's 50% more ability to receive damage, but it's also 50% more in maintanance cost, and 33% less in mobility (at least in being able to attack multiple targets). Maybe it's just me - I've always liked highly mobile Navies (which is why I miss the Excaliburs), but the only reason I could see going with a frigate is if I w
Can anyone explain why they would want to use Frigates? It seems to me that given the choice between having 3 battle cruisers or 2 frigates, it's a no-brainer: take the cruisers.
I agree with Wyrenn - a diplomatic option to say, "Get your ships out of my sectors" would be valuable. Especially if you need a casus belli.
Gherardo, the premise of the game is that the AI's know where all the good planets are. So it's unlikely Brad will chnage that. However, what would be nice is the opportunity for an alien species to sell you a map of the galaxy. (I can't keep from thinking about Mr. Haney from Green Acres, though!)
Jack, that was me with the original posting. And I have the same problem as Mr. Helmet - W2K doesn't seem to like SE. Thanks for your help.
One more bug (in 3Z and 3Z1) - if you click on Earth and then Details, you get a crtash to desktop. No other planet seems to have this problem.
There's a CTD with 3Z. Start a new game. Click on Sol, click on Earth and click on Details. You're back to the desktop.
Glad you like it. One other thing I wish was in (going back to the OS/2 version) is some way to wake up every ship that you own that s sentried or on guard duty.
Perhaps a simple implementation is that once the game ends, the option to keep playing (perhaps with the score frozen at that point) is offered. Then after reaching a cultural or alliance victory, you can continue trying to reach a military or technological victory.
I don't know about losing ships, but the same thing happened to me. Eventually the aliens morale tanked and their systems started defecting to me en masse. In ~20 turns I went from control of maybe 40% of the galaxy to a cultural victory.
Guard "wakes up" for enemy freighters. That's not unexpected, since you might want to shoot them. What I would like is the ability to sentry/guard constructors. Suppose there's some tasty resource that the Drengins have parked their starbase on, but they're at war with the Arceans. If the Arceans don't have a constructor nearby to grab the resource as soon as they've blown up the Drengin base, well, those sneeky Terrans will. Better still will be if the constructor wakes up if the r
Lucky Jack, that's entirely reasonable.
